This updated (today) NYT article has some explanatory information about what happened to GC on her quest.

There was a lot more to her story than reported elsewhere. I'm glad she kept her composure and even built a shelter out of tree branches. The organization is (IMO) trying to backpedal on their original description of her 'spiritual quest'. Being alone at a campsite has risks even for those experienced in the outdoors.
