I'm trying to summarize the "intruder with a grudge" theory that has been coming up frequently in recent videos (e.g. 60 Minutes Australia):

1/In 1996, someone (a co-worker, a business contact, a pageant rival, a contractor, even a "friend" etc) is holding an obsessive grudge against John Bennet Ramsey. The whole kidnapping is directed at him (e.g. the ransom doesn't mention Jonbenet's name once but it mentions John's 3 times and every other sentence has "you" in it). It seems that the intruder is more obsessed with John than with Jonbenet.

2/The intruder wants to hurt John both financially and emotionally (through his daughter), hence the ransom plus the molestation.

3/ The intruder knows the house well. He's worked or been invited there (e.g. the Ramseys's lavish Christmas parties). The intruder realizes what a maze the house is (7,000 sq. ft.), how isolated Jonbenet's bedroom is, how many windows/doors there are. He may notice a window that isn't properly closed or even unlock one discretely. He can even steal a key (7 doors in the house).

4/ The intruder accesses the house several times when the Ramseys are away. He familiarizes himself with the layout. He searches through drawers and finds information on the bonus. He can steal Patsy's notepad and pen.

5/ The intruder takes his time to write the ransom note, several days before the kidnapping (he never mentions Christmas day). He is still hesitating about the date or even the plan itself. He probably enjoys writing the letter. He teases/taunts John, alternating threats against Jonbenet and sacarstic concerns about John's well-being.

6/ The intruder decides to take action on Christmas Eve because the Ramseys are leaving for a trip the day after. He can't wait any longer.

7/ The intruder was in the house Christmas Eve before the Ramseys come home. He's hiding somewhere in the house.

8/ At night, he drops the note on the stairscase, goes to Jonbenet's room, gags her with a piece of cloth or his hand and carries her to exit he's selected.

9/ She fights back more than he expects so he hits her with his flashlight. Because of the noise, he rushes her to the basement. He gives up leaving the house because of the risk.

10/ On the way down, he notices the pain brush. He has brought ropes to tie her up and he uses one to make the garrot. As she continues to struggle or because he thinks the kidnapping can't work he kills her. He molests her for his own gratification.

11/ He hides her in the basement room he's noticed before. [Or maybe he does not hide her body, John does (see below).

12/ When John hears Patsy in the morning, he looks for Jonbenet and finds her body somewhere in the basement.

13/ He thinks Burke did it and that Patsy covered up to protect him. That would explain his weird attitude]

This scenario seems much more likely than the cover up by the parents. If Burke had hit Jonbenet on the head, the Ramseys just had to say that it was an accident: kids were throwing objects at each other and he hit her with the flashlight etc... And if Burke was molesting her and the parents were concerned that it could be discovered during the autopsy, why would they write such a weird ransom note? Three lines would have been enough. But they were genuinely concerned that Burke might have done it.

Interesting, but a couple of points.

The head blow was severe and would have knocked JBR unconscious. She was incapable of struggling after that blow.

If the point was a grudge against JR, this person has already caused the maximum of retribution by killing JBR. In this context the SA makes no sense, unless this person is also coincidentally a child molester/pedophile. A last minute decision to molest because, why not while I’m here? If the plan had gone awry because of JBR struggling and he/she fears being caught, staying longer to molest her seems a big risk to take.

Why would JR think BR did it? This implies something had been going on that JR and perhaps PR had knowledge of prior. And what about the RN? If JR thought BR killed his sister, then either BR also wrote the RN or PR did to cover up. Which makes the question why would the parents write such a weird note irrelevant. It points to a non-criminal pretending to be a kidnapper to cover up what happened and who did it.

I had heard a similar idea floated to me yesterday. It is an interesting idea and conversation provoking. There are definite issues with Intruder theory. It is possible that the intruder did all the things you speculate. However where it loses steam for me is that BR was admittedly wandering the house playing with his new toys. The intruder and BR would have ran into each other at some point. Why go for JB when BR is right there for the taking? My other issue with intruder/kidnapping theory, needing to incapacitate JB with a hit to the head is ludicrous to me. She was 6 yrs old, and an adult can't restrain her without hitting her in the head? The SA has always been confusing to me in the events of the killing. It always seemed out of place and unnecessary. Unless it occurred first and everything else followed because she screamed or threatened to tell. The RN is unnecessary as well. I believe written by woman because it is long and drawn out, and also addresses JR a lot meaning the woman was very angry with JR while writing this RN. Which is one reason I lean towards JR for the SA and murder or the cover up, and PR writing the RN. I bounce between the 3 family members regularly. Intruder theory never fits well with BR being awake and playing with his toys.

If it was simply a grudge against JR, why kill his daughter?
There are far more ways to harm him that would not risk such an endeavor.

No, she was the target for whatever reason.
No intruder would do the ridiculous things that were promoted by the intruder crowd.

Cord fibres were found in her bed. Also, I don't see the point of an intruder hiding her. That and the garotte takes time when he could have strangled with his hands - unless he wants it as visual torture. However it is along the lines of what I've been thinking or at a stretch, BR doing the whole killing (not the RN or moving of body). A vengeful intruder and parents thinking BR did it and suspecting he molested her, a parent finding JB, but JR moving her and manipulating the scene (blanket & nightdress). Tossed up if PR or intruder wrote the RN. The R's weird behaviour is explained anyhow. I've not thought out the motions but the above is more workable than the R's doing the whole thing, to my mind. Good to see a detailed theory being shared.
