When Vicente Zambada, the heir apparent to the Sinaloa cartel, wanted to quit the drug trade, he got help from an unusual place: His father’s partner, Chapo Guzman, offered to set him up w/ his “contacts” in the DEA.

El Chapo Trial: How a Cartel Prince Left the Drug Trade

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 16m16 minutes ago
While it may sound strange that a major kingpin had a channel to the American drug police, it was not the first time at Chapo's trial that a trafficker spoke about reaching out informally to the DEA.

El Chapo v El Vicentillo: son of cartel's co-founder testifies against drug lord
Vicente Zambada Niebla, son of the Joaquín Guzmán’s longtime partner, had been groomed to take over Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel

4 Jan 2019

"One of the greatest betrayals in mafia history emerged into open court this week at the New York trial of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, as the former heir-apparent to Guzmán’s Sinaloa federation turned against his own boss, the cartel – and apparently even his own father.

Vicente Zambada Niebla – “El Vicentillo” – is the son of Guzmán’s longtime partner and co-founder of the cartel, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, and was once groomed to take over the business....

In contrast to the dry, often droll, testimony of previous turncoat witnesses, El Vicentillo gave meandering testimony which nonetheless gave some idea of the scope and depth of his authority: he oversaw importations of cocaine from Colombia into Mexico and onward to Los Angeles and Chicago, which he made his centre of operations....

Zambada Niebla is a star – potentially crucial – prosecution witness, but a controversial one. He was arrested in 2010 in Mexico City and extradited to Chicago.

But he was never tried, and in April 2014 the DEA unsealed a guilty plea he had made in April 2013 in which he admitted operating a “vast narcotics trafficking conspiracy”. The court documents added that Zambada Niebla was now “cooperating with the United States”....

He faces sentencing in March....."

El Chapo once hit the dance floor with a diamond-studded gun

January 4, 2019

"Notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman really knew how to heat up the dance floor — with his diamond-studded gun.

Jurors Friday were treated to a never-before-seen photo of Guzman getting hot and heavy with a lady, as a bedazzled .38 super pistol peeks from his waistband.

The gun, one of many in the drug lord’s collection, is also emblazoned with a jaguar.

The photo was introduced as Vicente Zambada, the son of Guzman’s partner, recounted the hot shot’s love of weapons.

“Every time I saw [Guzman], he was armed,” said Zambada, who turned government witness following his arrest in 2009.

It was not clear from testimony when the photo was taken, or who the woman was.....

n a strange twist, Zambada also told the court that he was handed a phone in 2012 while in US custody after being driven to an unknown location in Chicago around midnight — and his fugitive father was on the other line.

“He said he loved me very much,” the witness said. “And that he would help [with my case], as would my compadre Chapo.”...."

Parts of El Chapo's trial are being conducted under extraordinary secrecy.

@vicenews joins @nytimes in calling for the court to unseal filings and "provide specific and compelling reasons" for the redactions.

Just today Judge Cogan granted a government motion to redact an already-sealed filling about witnesses because it was deemed that "there is little to no public interest in that information." The public should get to decide what is and isn't of interest.

Son of Wanted Mexican Drug Lord Names Belize in Sinaloa Cartel Empire

Jan 4, 2019

"Belize is named as part of the network of the Sinaloa Drug cartel. It came during the trial of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, head of the infamous drug cartel, which is underway in the United States...

Vicente Zambada is the son of Ismael Zambada Garcia, also one of the organization’s leaders. Vicente is presently incarcerated in the United States and on Thursday, the so-called cartel prince went against the grain by providing detailed testimony on the operations of the drug-trafficking empire.

Those specifics cover smuggling routes, money-laundering schemes and personal vendettas, among other particulars. During his time on the witness stand, Zambada glossed over the extent of the cartel’s activities in Belize and Honduras. Now, there have been frequent drug plane landings in the north and south of Belize so News Five contacted the Ministry of National Security earlier today for comment and Chief Executive Officer George Lovell spoke briefly on the information contained in a recently published New York Times article, as well as Belize’s efforts at fighting drug trafficking and transnational crimes.

On the Phone: (Ret.) Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security...."

Former Mexican prosecutor pleads guilty with El Chapo nearby

January 6, 2019

NEW YORK (AP) – A former state attorney general from Mexico pleaded guilty on Friday to United States (US) drug-trafficking charges at a courthouse where an infamous kingpin was also appearing at a conspiracy trial.

Both Edgar Veytia, once chief law enforcement officer in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, and Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman are being prosecuted in separate cases in federal court in Brooklyn.

Shortly after Guzman’s ongoing trial wrapped up for the week, Veytia was brought into another courtroom to plead guilty to charges he was bought off to help cartels smuggle cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine to the US from 2013 until the time of his arrest in 2017...."

Monday, January 7th:
*Trial continues (Day 24) (@ 9am ET) - NY – *Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera (El Chapo) (~61) arrested & charged with smuggled 155 tons of cocaine into U.S. Sinaloa drug cartel chief. Guzmán faces 17-count indictment charging him with drug trafficking, murder conspiracy & money laundering spanning nearly three decades. Plead not guilty to all charges. No bail.
Prosecutors say Guzmán ran Mexico's Sinaloa cartel from 1989 to 2014. In that time, they allege the cartel brought cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine & marijuana into the U.S. Prosecutors also charged Guzmán in connection with the assassinations of thousands of competitors. Plead not guilty to all charges. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
Trial expected to last several months. Also for trafficking, conspiracy & firearms in California, Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Florida & New York.

Skipping over Day 1 thru 21.
1/2/19: Judge Cogan has ruled on several issues related to witnesses & evidence. This means the jury won't hear about Operation Fast & Furious, the botched ATF weapons investigation that led to guns reaching cartel hands or Vicente Zambada's claim that the Sinaloa cartel had a secret pact with the DEA. Note that jurors will hear about guns that were successfully seized during Fast & Furious, just not the entire boondoggle.
1/3/19 Day 22: State witness: Vicente Zambada Niebla, the son of Chapo's partner, Mayo Zambada; Vicente was a top man in the Sinaloa cartel & something like its heir apparent. Trial continues 1/4.
1/4/18 Day 23: State witness: Vicente Zambada Niebla. Trial continues on Monday, 1/7.

Hello from Day 24 of El Chapo's trial.

Expecting more cross-examination of Vicente Zambada today, followed by law enforcement witnesses and another cooperator.

Stay tuned for updates.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Before Vicente Zambada was called to testify, prosecutors got the judge to block questions from the defense about Vicente's past claims about having a secret deal w/ the DEA. But that still came up during cross-examination on Friday. Here's how, from a sidebar convo w/ the judge.

DwTz-WeVsAEueq0.jpg

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
When Chapo's lawyer continued to ask about Vicente Zambada's meetings w/ the DEA, prosecutors objected, saying he was "belaboring the point." Judge Cogan, who has heard prosecutors belabor many points in the trial, overruled the objection, citing "people in glass houses."

Meanwhile, parts of Chapo's trial continue to unfold in secret. In a redacted filing from Jan. 2 prosecutors seek to limit questioning of a witness, believed to be Alex Cifuentes, about alleged bribes to a DEA agent and CIA involvement in the drug trade.

Here's @alanfeuer with some explanation of the three "mysterious" filings last night

----Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 6h6 hours ago
There were 3 mysterious filings in the Chapo case late last night. All are sealed but very interesting. The 1st concerns a witness likely to testify early this week. The witness, the govt says, suffered a "nervous breakdown" in 2013 when he learned the cartel was looking for him.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 6h6 hours ago
The 2nd is a letter by the defense in support of a habeas motion "ad testificandum" meaning it seeks to get someone out of custody to testify. About what? Unclear. But presumably it's testimony on behalf of Chapo. Who? We don't know. Why? Because the entire document is sealed.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 6h6 hours ago
The 3rd is a letter by the govt asking permission for a "contact visit" w/Chapo. Again, it's sealed so it's unclear if the govt is objecting against the defense trying to visit Chapo in person or trying to get such a visit for someone else.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 6h6 hours ago
Under his terms of confinement, Chapo has been denied contact visits (except for in the courtroom) even from his lawyers. While preparing for trial, the lawyers met w/him in separate rooms & were forced to communicate thru a plexiglass window. Who wants to visit? We don't know.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 6h6 hours ago
All of these filings point to the extreme secrecy that has shrouded this case from its inception start and that has continued even through more than two months of public trial. The darkness surrounding the proceeding has been extraordinary. See this:

The Public Trial of El Chapo, Held Partially in Secret

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 6h6 hours ago
Before Christmas, lawyers for the NY Times wrote a detailed letter to Judge Cogan protesting these unusual measures. But for some unknown reason, the letter complaining about secrecy has not yet been placed on the public docket.

Vicente told the jurors that Chapo "knew I was going to come testify against him," adding that even though he implicated Chapo in many crimes, "My compadre Chapo is not the enemy." One wonders if Chapo feels the same.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
Chapo's lawyers have argued that Mayo is the real mastermind of the cartel, and on cross examination suggested that Mayo has remained at large in Mexico while several of his former partners and allies have either wound up dead or in prison.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
The list was long:
2 Arellano-Felix bros in prison,
1 dead Nacho Coronel dead
Guero Palma prison
Vicente Carillo Fuentes prison
2 Beltran Leyva bros dead, 1 in prison
Chapo on trial
Etc.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
Vicente testified that both Mayo & Chapo passed info on their allies and enemies to the DEA, and the defense suggested that Mayo was ratting people out in order to remain free.
Of course, it's possible that Mayo was indeed ratting people out but Chapo is still a major drug dealer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
When Vicente left we got interesting testimony from an FBI agent based in Tijuana about a raid at a villa in Cabo San Lucas where Chapo was supposedly holed up in 2012.
More than 50 Mexican special forces and Marines took part--but Chapo apparently escaped in the nick of time.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
There was video of Chapo's room in disarray: his size 9 Nikes, a black baseball cap, snacks on the bed, some over the counter meds--even what seemed to be Chapo's underwear.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
Seized in the raid was a notebook including one scrawl that seemed to reference the raid. The FBI guys also said the Mexican forces did not guard the back of the house as they were meant to.
The implication seemed to be that Chapo was tipped off and got out just in time.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 3h3 hours ago
There were even footprints leading from the back patio (w/a pool) down into a dry creek bed behind the house, the FBI guy testified. The video clearly looked as if the occupants of the villa checked out in a hurry...

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 2h2 hours ago
For the next two days the authorities searched for Chapo even sending Blackhawk helicopters up into the sky. They never found him. They did however find some M4 rifles, grenade launchers and a pair of night vision googles in the villa. Also: a bill of sale for a $20 airplane.

Vicente Zambada is done testifying. Last bit of cross-examination focused on his communications w/ his father El Mayo while in US custody. They spoke by phone in a call arranged by attorneys. Vicente said it was mostly small talk, then a request for info to give the DEA.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Chapo's lawyer Eduardo Balarezo acted incredulous that the DEA arranged a phone call between Vicente Zambada and his father El Mayo, suggested that shortly afterward they arranged to have El Chapo captured. Vicente denied that, said Chapo knew he was cooperating.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Vicente Zambada on Chapo: "He knew I was coming to testify… my compadre Chapo is not my enemy."

Chapo's lawyer responds: "You're testifying against him, you are his enemy."

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Defense questioning ended w/ a long list of all of El Mayo's cartel associates who are now dead or in prison. Mayo himself has never been arrested. The implication is that Mayo is good at setting other people up to take the fall — i.e. Chapo — while he remains free.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
The witness now testifying is Jose Moreno, a former FBI agent in Mexico. He testified about a 2012 raid at a luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas where El Chapo was staying. Chapo narrowly escaped but left behind a trove of evidence.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
We saw photos of pages from one of El Chapo's notebooks, it looked to be a drug kingpin's to-do list, w/ references to "3 tons of weed," payments that needed to be made, weapons that needed to be purchased, etc.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
We also got a virtual tour of the house in Cabo where Chapo was hiding out. It was nice — had a pool w/ a waterslide. Also saw inside Chapo's bedroom. Now know that he wears 32x30 Levi jeans, size 9 Nikes, size medium polo shirts, and prefers Eternity cologne from Calvin Klein.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 2h2 hours ago
Balarezo pointed out that there was no evidence connecting Chapo w/ the house in Cabo. No fingerprints, no hair samples, no DNA.

FBI agent responded: "Sir, I wasn't in charge of the scene." Says it was responsibility of Mexican police to collect evidence.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 2h2 hours ago
FBI agent said US had tipped of the Mexican authorities to Chapo's location at the house in Cabo and helped plan a raid. The Mexicans proceeded to show up two hours late, conveniently forgot to cover the back door of Chapo's house. FBI found footprints leading out the back.

Testimony has shifted gears again: Now on the stand is Edgar Ivan Galvan, who pleaded guilty to running drugs and guns across the US border for the Sinaloa cartel. It's the first time we've gotten testimony from what appears to be a relatively low level cartel worker bee.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 2h2 hours ago
The next cooperating witness is Edgar Iván Galván. He was a Sinaloa cartel operative in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. He's testifying about Chapo's war with the Juarez cartel, which began in 2007.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 2h2 hours ago
Galván is 41. He pleaded guilty to cocaine and weapons conspiracy charges, is currently serving a 24-year sentence. He grew up in Juarez and worked at a grocery store and as a cab driver before joining the Sinaloa cartel.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 2h2 hours ago
Galvan said his life of crime began after his divorce in 2003 when he started hanging out in night clubs in Ciudad Juarez. He became "party friends" w/ a guy in his apartment complex, Antonio Marrufo. Marrufo, aka Jaguar, ran the pot trade in Juarez for a cartel called La Linea.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 1h1 hour ago
Galván said he was recruited to join the cartel by Antonio Marufo aka Jaguar: "Chapo had offered Jaguar to be in charge of Juarez.… Chapo needed someone who had a strong character and was daring, who could eliminate the La Linea people so he could take control of Juarez."

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 1h1 hour ago
Cut to 2007. Meeting Galvan again, Jaguar now boasts Chapo had just put him in charge of "cleaning Juarez" of all La Linea people. Chapo wanted control of Juarez. It was "personal," Galvan said. According to Jaguar, Chapo said that "by his balls" he was going to take Juarez.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 1h1 hour ago
Why had Jaguar, who once worked for La Linea, taken a job as Chapo's chief killer eliminating La Linea? Galvan said that Jaguar had been kidnapped in 2005 by a guy named JL, who worked for Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, a La Linea leader. He wanted revenge against the group.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 1h1 hour ago
Jaguar's interests aligned here w/Chapo's. (He was fighting Carrillo Fuentes too for the lucrative Juarez crossing.) Just before lunch, we got a foretaste of the violence. Trying to recruit Galvan, Jaguar warned him not to go to Juarez b/c things "were going to get really ugly."

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 1h1 hour ago
Galván on Chapo's motivation: "It was something that was personal. In his own words, he said that 'by his balls he was going to take Juarez." The war for Juarez is covered in episode 4 of our podcast. Listen:

The prosecution took us (via cell phone footage) on a grand tour of one of El Chapo's Mexican properties. The judge characterized the lengthy tour - complete with a closet survey - as "a real estate broker's" presentation, warning the prosecution: "Don't beat a dead horse."

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 6h6 hours ago
"I did not know the future," Vicente Zambada said of taking a plea deal, adding that he could not have guessed he'd one day have to testify against El Chapo. "My compadre Chapo is not my enemy."

During cross-examination, Eduardo Balarezo submitted into evidence the cover of a @revistaproceso magazine picturing its reporter with El Mayo. The prosecution objected to the jury seeing the words on the cover: "En la guarida del Mayo Zambada" ("In the den of Mayo Zambada.")

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 6h6 hours ago
El Mayo is the man in the baseball cap with his arm around the older, white-haired gentleman (the reporter from @revistaproceso).

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 6h6 hours ago
The defense ended its cross-examination of El Mayo's son, Vicente Zambada with a litany of photos of the Sinaloa cartel's enemies and associates, including: Alfredo and Héctor Beltrán-Leyva, Guero Palma and Nacho Coronel -- everyone was dead or in prison ... except El Mayo.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 5h5 hours ago
Also among those currently incarcerated: Vicente Zambada (who finished testifying today), Ismael Zambada “Imperial,” and Serafín Zambada Ortiz (all sons of El Mayo), as well as El Mayo’s brother, Jesus Reynaldo Zambada (who was the government’s first star witness).

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 5h5 hours ago
Vicente Zambada and El Chapo exchanged nods as Vicente left the stand today, following three days of testimony.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 5h5 hours ago
Among the items in the home: a pair of size-9 Nike sneakers, which were not brought into the courtroom. "So if they don't fit Mr. Guzmán, the jury has no way of knowing that," Eduardo @balarezolaw said. Then what? Even the stern FBI special agent laughed: "The OJ trial?"

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 5h5 hours ago
Edgar Ivan Galvan came to the stand today to testify against El Chapo. He’s a relatively low-level witness by trial standards. He said he got into marijuana sales following his divorce in 2003. He previously worked at a grocery store and as a cab driver.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 4h4 hours ago
In 2004 Edgar Ivan Galvan met “Jaguar” in 2004. “He told me that he was the person in charge of all the marijuana” in Juarez.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 4h4 hours ago
In July 2005, some two years after his divorce and eventual break from the legal world, Edgar Ivan Galvan was stopped by police in Orlando and arrested with a friend for possession of 550 pounds of marijuana.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 4h4 hours ago
When Edgar Ivan Galvan saw Jaguar again, he had gone through a complete transformation - giving up his rancher outfits for brand-named clothing and a stylish new haircut. In the passing 2.5 years, Jaguar had cut a deal with El Chapo, who had offered him the Juarez Plaza.

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 4h4 hours ago
Jaguar, who had started in La Línea cartel had switched sides after he was kidnapped by Vicente Carrillo’s right-hand man, J.L. Instead of a typical reaction to being kidnapped, “Jaguar thought that this was the perfect opportunity for him to be able to kill J.L.”

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 4h4 hours ago
At the time, Chapo wanted control of Juarez, then Línea territory ... at any cost. “It was something personal,” Edgar Ivan Galvan recalled. “And he said that by his balls he was going to take over Juarez.” (Huh? Yes, the translation is likely faulty, but had to share as is.)

Emily Palmer‏Verified account @emilyepalmer 4h4 hours ago
Jaguar, who was already a part of the Línea cartel was the perfect inside man to “eliminate the Línea people little by little.” To be continued back in court ...

Vicente Zambada Niebla is finished on the stand on day 24 of #ElChapo's trial. There wasn’t anything worthy of a headline in his testimony, but some good tidbits that reflect his enduring respect for his former boss -- despite it all.

Molly Crane-Newman‏Verified account @molcranenewman 4h4 hours ago
@balarezolaw pressed VZN to explain more about contact he’s had with his fugitive father following his 2012 extradition to the U.S. VZN testified that he's only spoken with his father twice since & said the purpose of the calls was to obtain info from him and Chapo for the DEA

Molly Crane-Newman‏Verified account @molcranenewman 3h3 hours ago
Balarezo noted Chapo was arrested not long after these calls w his father took place, but Vicente rejected the insinuation they colluded against Guzman -- stressing that he only provided agents with information on enemies of the Sinaloa Cartel, like Arturo Beltran Leyva's number

“You’re testifying against him. He is your enemy,” the lawyer said.

FBI agent Jose Moreno was the 2nd witness to take the stand, who testified about 2 2012 raids on properties alleged to belong to El Chapo.

Guzman avoided capture by the skin of his teeth during the 2nd raid in Cabo in Feb 2012 under some pretty questionable circumstances

Molly Crane-Newman‏Verified account @molcranenewman 3h3 hours ago
Moreno said U.S. authorities provided special forces in Mexico with the Cabo location, but their Mexican counterparts dropped the ball when they showed up two hours late and failed to secure the residence from all sides -- sloppiness he'd never witnessed before

Authorities discovered a plethora of evidence inside the swanky holiday home: ledgers detailing money movements, bribes to the Mexican AG's office, expenses detailed for weapons like grenades and grenade launchers; cell phones; clothing, make-up and other personal items.

When Galvan was hired to work for the Sinaloa Cartel, he was tasked with eliminating rival cartels in his native city of Juarez. He said this meant a great deal to El Chapo.

“It was something personal,” he said. “He said that, by his balls — he was going to take Juarez.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 1h1 hour ago
Day ends with Galván still under cross-examination, he'll be back on the stand tomorrow morning. Defense attorney Bill Purpura asked Galván today whether he'd ever met Chapo. "Never in my life," he replied. Also admitted he couldn't identify a recording of Chapo's voice.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 1h1 hour ago
Like every other cooperator so far, the defense tried to make it seem like Galván is only testifying because he thinks it'll get his sentence reduced. In this case it was somewhat effective. Galván is at the bottom of the cartel food chain and had no direct interactions w/ Chapo.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 1h1 hour ago
That's it for today. Expecting a law enforcement witness to be on the stand all day tomorrow after Galván finishes testifying. Stay tuned for updates.
