I was driving last night from NC to PA up I-81. A convoy of police cars with lights and sirens blew past me onto exit 221, I-64. Even though I had no idea where I was in relation to Charlottesville or areas connected to this case, my thoughts immediately went to Hannah. I was reading this case here religiously but had not kept up with anything the past 10 days while vacationing. Now looking at the map in relation to the body recovery, I am a bit creeped out.
Incidentally, I got off at the next exit, near Staunton, VA for gas and coffee. I parked in the far end of the parking lot. As someone who lives in center city Philly and sees shady behavior on a daily basis (and is hyper-vigilant about my movements there), I was shocked at the "atmosphere". My hinky meter was going off like crazy. Loads of young girls and guys pulling in and out, trading cars, waiting, walking back and forth, etc. they were NOT just hanging out. I'd bet a lot of money on it. As I walked inside I thought "this reminds me of the CCV of Alexis Murphy I saw on Websleauths. I wonder if that is near here?" Well, again, when I looked at the map and pinpointed where HG and MH bodies were found, then where AM was last seen, that meter started moving again (and, yes, I was quite close).
I can't explain it, but this whole case seemed to be waving its hands right in front of me last night even though I had no idea where I was. And I cannot shake the uneasy feeling I felt about that area around the gas station. I was overwhelmed to realize that I typically feel safe in similar environments, but my observations were so different there, I made a point to remember to look it up when I got home to see if there were any institutions nearby that would explain the high number of this kind of young loiterers in this area.
And right when I went to do that tonight, the breaking news on finding the body shows up. The whole thing is sickening. I have to say, though, suddenly I can understand how JM could have gone unnoticed all this time. His behavior would have blended right in to at least some of the area subculture.
