Abigail Bernstein and her two sons, Koa Kai and Kush Kohole, were last seen at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor back in October 2022.

They had been scheduled to leave on a year-long journey at sea with someone Abigail met online.

*****
But the Coast Guard was notified last year they never returned.

“Ms. Bernstein lived a nomadic lifestyle and had cut ties with her family before going out to sea, interviews and intelligence indicated she was probably living off of the grid and off of the land somewhere in Hawaii,” FBI Honolulu Special Agent in Charge Steven Merrill said.

“While the Bernstein family went missing on Oahu, Ms. Bernstein did have ties to the Big Island, Kauai and Maui.”

Officials also confirmed the boys were not enrolled in school and Abigail cut off contact with her family and cut her cell phone service before they departed.

“Because two minors are involved, we have an interest in protecting and are working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Missing Child Center at Hawaii in locating them and ensuring their safety,” said Steven Merrill, FBI Agent in Charge. “While we are concerned for their welfare and whereabouts, we have no evidence of foul play, but have not ruled that out.”

NOTE: In the video linked in the original post, it was stated that the boat returned.

I wonder who the boat belonged to? The man she met online? What type of boat was it? Were either of them even remotely experienced/prepared enough to spend a year at sea? Has the man been located or is he also missing (assuming LE has been able to identify him)?

If the boat returned to Hawaii, what did the man say? Odd detail to leave out.

Who reported her missing? Is there a Dad to the boys in the picture? Could this be a custody issue?

I did find several court records for her name here - http://jimspss1.courts.state.hi.us:8080/eCourt/
If her middle name is Charity, this is the correct Abigail. There are two DV cases, if you seach that person's name on FB. There is a post saying he can't live without his boys. Coincidence? Maybe ...

Lots of info here, Honolulu Star Advertiser

“the captain was seen returning with the boat, the family did not return.”

“FBI agents have interviewed various witnesses, family members and others, including the boat captain, who said the family got seasick and departed his vessel by unknown means, possibly another vessel, but that has not been substantiated, an FBI spokeswoman said. The FBI did not disclose the captain’s name.”

“But could it be that Bernstein was also trying to hide from someone, rather than simply living a “nomadic lifestyle.”
“Court records show Bernstein filed for and obtained two temporary restraining orders against Nelson.”

From the same article:

Merrill said the boat captain is a person of interest but has not been arrested or charged with any crime.

So the boat captain told the FBI "the family got seasick and departed his vessel by unknown means, possibly another vessel" -- how does the boat captain not know how the family left the vessel? Unless the captain was sleeping and the family left while the boat was docked at a port somewhere, I struggle to understand how the captain wouldn't know how/where the family left? And if that was the case, would the captain not have found it weird that the 3 passengers just left? And if the family left the boat because they were seasick, why would they then get on a different boat?

(bbm) "Departed his vessel by unknown means"... what? Unknown to the FBI or unknown to the captain? I don't understand how they could have departed the boat without the captain knowing. It's possible but seems so incredibly unlikely

This is so vague. When was the last time the captain saw them? Where were they? Open sea? In a port?

From reading, it sounds like she was living an alternative life, usually when I see this, there is either drug use or major mental illness at play. When parents isolate their children in poverty and off grid, bad things happen :(

What vibes are those, since I don’t know those cases?
If you have the time, there is an absolutely wonderful novella length series of articles about the Oba Chandler case.

There are a few things about Silas Duane Boston. I can recommend the episode of Evil Lives Here, which was where I learnt about him and his crimes, right from his own children.

This article covers the main points.

Tl;dr, both took people on their boats, one for a 'sunset cruise', the other as 'crew', then attacked and drowned them, expecting the sea to hide their crimes.

MOO
