During the past four decades, at least 459 people may have died at the hands of highway serial killers,
FBI statistics show. Investigators do not know how many people may be responsible for the killings but at least one such case of murder, attempted murder or unidentified human remains has been reported in 48 states, along roads as far north as
Alaska and as far south as
Key West. They believe the killers find their victims and dispose of the bodies along highways, sometimes near quiet roadside rest areas or at bustling truck stops.
Often, the victims are prostitutes, abducted in one state and dumped in another. And the killers? Authorities say they have 200 suspects; almost all are long-haul truck drivers. To date, the FBI says it has helped local authorities arrest at least 10 suspects believed to be involved in more than 30 of the killings.
Harrigan and other law enforcement authorities believe serial killers still operate along some of the most well-traveled roads in the nation.
"They're out there," he says.
Harrigan says a typical motorist isn't in danger. At least 234 victims were prostitutes, he says, and stranded motorists represent "a very, very small" number of the homicide cases. But Harrigan will not say how many, and he acknowledges that investigators know "nothing" about 130 of the victims. Among the mysteries are more than 80 cases including the February case in Barstow in which authorities couldn't identify the remains or recovered only body parts.

That's a lot of Doe's.
We have another thread on this subject somewhere from last year when the report was released. I'll look for it and see if we can merge the two. At the time we talked about the high number of unsolved highway killings along the I-40 corridor, particularly Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Hey! I had an incident in Denver CO which enlightened me to something most of you maybe do not know!
I was trying to deliver to a Pepsi plant right downtown Denver. My trailer tandems were back a little because I was heavy and thats where they were legal.
There was a construction crew setting out cones to the left, blocking off a lane they were going to be working on and like a foot drop down on the right side for a lane they had dug up.
Unfortunately my truck was a standard semi width and I wasnt dropping off the edge off the pavement to the right. So I put my tires on the very edge of my lane to my right, letting myself have an inch or two so I didnt drop off into that foot deep lane to the right.
And I ran over every single cone they were putting out on the left side. Because it wasnt wide enough for a truck. Just cars or pickups.
Now, there were two blocks to go before my first wide right swing onto the street I would follow for another couple of blocks, then swing wide right again. Then go up the same road to a stadium then right again into a gate into Pepsi.
I stopped at the first red light. Then when it turned green I went another block and stopped at the street I was going to turn right at, as soon as traffic cleared.
And here came this black male just running up the sidewalk soooo fast! Chugging his arms like a train.
I saw him a few hundred yards back because I was checking my right again because traffic had cleared and I was turning right on red before opposing traffic got their green. But for him I stopped. He was running with all of his might.
I said to myself, Good thing I check several tilmes before I turn! I would have swung the truck and run him over!
Man! He didnt care whose light was red or green! I thought he was just running down the sidewalk across all the intersections!
Imagaine my complete surprise!
He started beating the sh@t out of my truck tractor with his feet and his fists. Beating the little window trying to break it. Hopping around like an little apoplectic kangaroo!
I put the window down just to see what was wrong and he started flinging himself up there. Getting his finger over the edge of the open window and swinging with his free arm.
I rolled the window up because he was going to bust my window and get that door open and beat my white a@@ for running over his cones. He was shouting enraged calling me filthy, racist, misogynistic, vulgar names.
Well the lane was not wide enough for my truck.
I thought he worked for the city. And I have been driving a long time. I have never seen anyone erupt into such a fit of rage before. Even in an accident situation I have never seen anyone behave this way.
So when I got backed into the dock at Pepsi I called the cops on him and told them everything.
I told them if he was working for the city he couldnt just be attacking peoples cars everytime he got angry. What if I were a senior or something. He really attacked like he would have beaten my white ho a@@ up if he could have gotten that window broken.
He ran two blocks to beat up my truck. Like a crazy wild animal.
When the cops came, there were 2 of them and they said road construction crews dont work for the city. They come from all over the country and just bid on a job. And anyone could be on a road construction crew. Illegals. Ex-convicts. Gang members. So they were going to go talk to him and figure and out what they could about him. That drop off was like a foot on the right and I wasnt going to damage my truck tractor just because they werent smart enough to make the lane wide enough.
So anyway, has anyone considered it could have been part of a road construction crew?
