What city(ies) is it suppose to hit? Heavily populated or not?

--That's a great question,and its frustrating that Fox News or the Weather Channel do not tell us the populations of these cities and towns that are in Dean's path--WC did say that Campeche, on the west side, has a population of 200,000

I have a friend that lived in the yucatan area, campeche, thankfully she now lives in hidalgo so she will only see alot of rain. Unfortunately many of her friends still live there.This is bringing back to many memories of hurricane katrina

Well it hit a little bit ago - CAT 5 - somewhere close tp a city by the name of Chetumal. Nothing on the news nothing really on the net. This is a RARE CAT 5 guys, come on, where's the coverage????

right, Chetumal has 130,000 people--Dean struck 30 miles north of there--Hurricane Dean has 165 mph and gusting winds to 200 mph--It is the Eighth strongest hurricane in recorded history and the 3rd strongest hurricane to ever make landfall--Almost all of the top ten hurricanes have happened during the last 27 years

yes, nice link--Although the eye hit a popular port, most of the population there is fairly low inland--There's a swampy nature reserve where the eye hit, so luckily, any loss of life should be minimal

Category 5 storms -- capable of catastrophic damage -- are extremely rare. Only three have hit the U.S. since record-keeping began.

Now, for my question. If Dean is a Cat 5, why isn't it being called one of the TOP 3 hurricanes in recorded history - I believe it is around a 9 or something at this point. ???????????????????

--It is actually number 8 on the list of strongest storms ever recorded---It is number three or 4 as to when it actually made landfall--Camille(1969) Andrew(1992) and the Labor Day storm(1935) are the strongest to ever make landfall--In the open ocean/gulf, Wilma(2005) is still the strongest storm of all time

Millibars: The standard unit of measurement for atmospheric pressure used by the National Weather Service. One millibar is equivalent to 100 newtons per square meter. Standard surface pressure is 1,013.2 millibars.

The lower the number, the stronger the storm.

Katrina dropped down to 902. Wilma, on the other hand, was a scary 882. It's very compact and the unleashing of all that pressure is what is so dangerous. It only releases once it hits land. So not even every cat 3 hurricane is the same, one can be way more deadly than the next based on mb pressure.

I talked to my friend from hidalgo, the skies are already getting dark and she is 150 km inland, the wind is picking up to so she must be feeling the outskirts of it. I hope to talk to her later on today but the electricity is poor out there so the slightest wind will put it out and it will be weeks if not longer before it comes back.

Hurricane Dean is the fourth named storm, first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the most intense tropical cyclone in the Atlantic basin since Hurricane Wilma of 2005, the ninth most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the third most intense landfalling Atlantic hurricane. 5 of the Top 10 Hurricanes have occurred since 2000:

Your welcome for the links, its sweet of you to help out and thank you. Prayers for the families are needed most. Many are going to need financial help as these areas are very poor. Most did not leave from the yucatan, looting is too high if you leave. I think her phones are out I havent heard from her for awhile. I hope it wont be too long till I hear from her again, I cant imagine going through it. Thankfully she is not in a really bad area. Originally it was thought to hit Hidalgo with a category 1 but I read how they have updated to a possible category 2.

Hi everyone. Just as some added information for you who normally have to live with Hurricanes five months out of the year. I live in North San Diego County, and we received a very unusual thunder storm yesterday morning including an inch of rain which we almost never get during the summer and some flash floods in the inland areas. The newsman said it was the remnants of Hurricane Dean which crossed Mexico to the Gulf of California, crossed Baja out to sea and turned around the wallop us. What was left of the eye passed right over us. Not much left to the storm, but it was dramatic for us.
