The meteorological department for St Maarten (a Caribbean island that is part of the Netherlands) says it expects the eye of Irma to pass over the island at around 8am Wednesday local time – that’s in around five hours from now.

It says sustained winds in St Maarten have already reached storm force, with gusts of 56mph (90kph).

The northern part of the island is the French overseas collectivity of St Martin, where the French interior ministry has issued a high alert.

My daughter in West Palm will be staying home - they're prepared and have shutters. My Coconut Grove daughter is still planning to leave with baby while her hubby and pets stay - they're in zone C so they should be okay. Her main concern is having the baby in the house without power. I just hope she doesn't wait too long because the roads are going to be jammed. Miami gas stations are already getting lines.

Bently, I'm checking out the gas buddy app. I hope it works here. The stations are still open they just don't have gas. Or they only have unleaded or super. And you don't know until you pull up to the pump. Thank you for the tip!

Once you download the app, check EACH grade to see the last time the price was updated. The app shows if it has been 15 minutes, 3 hours, or 2 days since updated and you can see that for specific grades differently at each station.

My family has loaded up the car with folks and dogs and cats, and left Dunedin 15 minutes ago to head north, out of State.

Someone here also said they lived in Dunedin and were out of water. Usually Home Depot will restock quickly, are you staying? This link is for you as to shelters and topo maps https://pinellas-egis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=5fa37e98d1bb4ffaafc8e164c04e191c

I guess it's the times we live....overload of information and question everyone and everything.

Remember back in the day when the weather guy came on TV and you just assumed he/she was right? Now we don't believe anything they say. Those were the days...LOL

Ah, remember those 2 foot by 2 foot maps that we would drag out to write down the latitude and longitude to track the hurricanes as we didn't have the radar back then on the television! :floorlaugh: back in the dinosaur ages!

7 am traffic in the keys, all entirely green. Mandatory evac for tourists start at sunrise, and later today, mandatory evac for folks who live there. I'll keep checking. I see rush hour traffic around Miami etc, but no major evacuation reds/delays around there yet. I'm also keeping an eye on interstates out of Charleston now, but just normal rush hour delays around the city so far.

:coffee:

We have family up here from Florida (Monday) who are flying back Friday (?) Who didn't even know about Irma :scared:

And to think last Saturday when I was at Publix doing the weekly food shopping, there was no supply problem - it is frightening how quickly Irma formed quite literally overnight - we don't have any water, and unsure if we will be evacuating. Gov Scott will hopefully make a statement by Thursday for south FL where we live. Good news is he suspended all the road tolls (can't believe they still exist down here; when I still lived in CT, I forgot which Gov did away with all tolls on the roads). We have everything else though - bath tissue, canned food, full gas tank.

Hope everyone in FL stays safe!

The NHC (1st pic) still places a major hurricane in the center of South FL. The GFS (3rd pic) has moved further east, with a 2nd landfall in Charleston.

Not pictured, The EURO model also moved east although not as far as GFS. Specifically, the EURO has a first landfall in south FL and a second in Charleston.

The intensity forecast go down to a cat3/4, related to expected impact from hitting land over the next 5 days and possibly slightly cooler waters than currently experiencing.

I feel so on-edge and am not even close to these areas that may be affected. it feels like this has to be a foreign country, not my beloved States-kin. Have I never paid this much attention before, or is this season actually much more serious than ever? Stronger winds and more water .... definitely has to be the worst in my lifetime.

What an excellent idea! Thanks for sharing it.

We've lived in FL for 9 years now - this past summer has had a lot of rain but it has also been very hot and humid. Last week, my windshield rear-view mirror on my Altima melted off the glass once again and fell into the driver's seat - for the third time since moving down here. FL heat is a special kid of heat it will also distort shopping plaza roadside signs made of heavy-duty plastic, too.

Mr and I are moving out of FL next year. My poor body can no longer tolerate this heat.

I'm running late for week, will return after 5 PM

Excellent info here for those in the path. Please stay safe everyone.

Islands under hurricane warning include Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Puerto Rico, the US and British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Martin/St. Maarten, St. Barts, the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to the northern border with Haiti, Guadeloupe, the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Islands near its expected path Wednesday morning and early afternoon include St. Martin, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis, and the British and US Virgin Islands.

The storm's center is expected to pass near or just north of Puerto Rico on Wednesday afternoon or night.

Irma then is expected to turn toward the Turks and Caicos islands and the southeastern Bahamas, where storm surges of up to 20 feet are possible.

In the US Virgin Islands, Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp ordered a 36-hour curfew that was starting at 6 a.m. local time Wednesday.

In the Bahamas, emergency evacuations have been ordered for six southern islands -- Mayaguana, Inagua, Crooked Island, Acklins, Long Cay and Ragged Island. "This is the largest such evacuation in the history of the country," Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said. Bahamian officials also canceled vacation time for police and defense forces.

Sidenote: Maho Beach is a lovely little beach at the foot of the Princess Juliana airport on St. Maarten. It was a wonderful stop on our cruise, where we watched the planes land overhead, just feet above our heads.

In Barbuda, the storm ripped off the roof of the island's police station, forcing officers to seek refuge in the nearby fire station and at the community center that served as an official shelter.

The Category 5 storm also knocked out communication between islands.

There was damage to several homes, but it was too early to do tally or assess the extent of the damage.

Key West International Airport in Florida is preparing to close. Officials said the airport will close on Wednesday night due to the TSA's security checkpoint ceasing the screening of passengers. The final flight out of the Keys, Delta Flight 567, is scheduled to depart for Atlanta at 5.50pm, all commercial flights will then be canceled until further notice. General aviation flights will continue from Key West and the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport until conditions become unsafe to operate. However, international general aviation flights will end on Wednesday afternoon when US Customs and Border Protection ceases operations.

___

Antiguan police are waiting until the winds dropped before sending helicopters to check on damage reports of damage in Barbuda. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Hurricane Irma will bring life-threatening wind, storm surge and rainfall to parts of Puerto Rico today.
