Just being out at Publix today after work (they, like everyone else, is out of water) - and on the roads - reminds me of that sci-fi movie "Panic in the Year Zero" with Ray Milland. Low budget Roger Corman movie but depicts a frighteningly 100% accurate picture of human nature during a major disaster.

Yes! lots of selfish behavior at Sam's Club, which is not typical of this area.

Miami-Dade County will start evacuating special-needs residents on Wednesday, and may announce other evacuations soon. Schools and county offices are to be closed on Thursday and Friday.

The Florida Keys issued a mandatory evacuation of visitors, tourists and non-residents starting 7 a.m. Wednesday. The county also announced a mandatory evacuation of residents starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday. "There will be no roadblocks to prevent people from entering the Keys before the storm to take care of property and help evacuate family members," the county said. "But all residents should heed the resident evacuation orders." The Keys SPCA said it is evacuating "all animals out of the Keys," and officials at county animal shelters "are directing residents to evacuate with their pets."

The President has declared emergencies for Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The Florida Governor also ordered 7,000 National Guard troops to report for duty by Friday morning. Of those, 100 were activated Tuesday to begin helping with preparations.

Broward County was coordinating plans for 43 shelters that can accommodate up to 33,000 people. Sheltering operations were expected to begin on Thursday.

I'm not a native Floridian but love to visit ya'll, and am so sorry that Irma looks to be heading your way. I don't know if this has been suggested but someone posted about Pets and Hurricanes on s.m.:

Use a Sharpie, and write your info on your pet's stomach, if the pets are not micro-chipped (I'd probably do it even if they were micro-chipped.), i
n case you should get separated from your pet during the hurricane. Since communications may be down for awhile, you might consider putting an emergency person's contact info instead/also, provided they too are not in Irma's path.

Oops, negligent in my duties, but RL called!

Anywho, this is at this moment (9/5 @ 7:15 pm eastern) the google traffic in the Keys, with MANDATORY evacuation starting tomorrow at sunrise.

googlemaps.com (with traffice)

ETA: The expert :websleuther: above says to include a link, and the link changes if you open so you'll get current time that you open it? :dunno:

I'm intrigued to show the time differences on traffic, like those above are doing comparisons with the models and how they change day to day/hour to hour

https://www.google.com/maps/@24.8819129,-81.064201,10z/data=!5m1!1e1

For my learning purposes, can I get feedback if the jpeg is showing or not now? TIA Especially interested in you Ipad folks. Also, I have found that sometimes it doesn't show, but when someone replies to it, it does show

ETA #2: I just looked back to see that Spelz was the one who requested!!! seeya: Spelz!! lol, I was at my limit of 5 emoticons, so you don't get an emoticon, sorry giggle:

Waaah! I demand an emoticon! (Nevermind, I commandeered the little sleuth guy you referred to as the expert! :giggle:). (I had to delete a couple of yours so I could add my own)

I do see your small "traffic" map ... I assume that is your jpeg item. Woohoo ... I see it! And thanks for the link, too.

Hmmm ... now that you said it, I do recall on another thread (or threads) when some people would say they couldn't see something but when they clicked "reply with quote" it would show up in the reply box. Maybe when we get our new server it will all work better for everyone. Thanks for trying,Bently! I will survive here. Just do what works best for you.

I feel so on-edge and am not even close to these areas that may be affected. it feels like this has to be a foreign country, not my beloved States-kin. Have I never paid this much attention before, or is this season actually much more serious than ever? Stronger winds and more water .... definitely has to be the worst in my lifetime.

Things keep changing quickly with this Hurricane.
At 6am today, it was showing spaghetti models on the west coast.
At 8am today, spaghetti in the middle.
At 9:30pm tonight, suddenly spaghetti on the east coast & some out in the Atlantic.

When people say there's a lot of time to prepare, there's **usually** time to figure out where to go but not with this Hurricane. This is a schizophrenic monster of a storm!

And then the Interstates start backing up & gas stations run out of gas.

"No where to run now baby; no where to hide".....

I got lucky today after work! I found a station that only had unleaded. There are bags over most pumps and hand written signs. It would be so much easier if they just took the numbers off the big sign if they don't have gas. Hate pulling in only to see that they are out.

Yay you got gas!! And I totally agree having to pull in is tedious.

I used gas buddy app on my phone (and also on computer) to know open gas stations and prices.

It shows prices, and when the last update on prices were etc. so you would know if station is open after a storm etc. (See current below screen shot of stations and prices..go LIVE and check to see when last update was though!

HTH

Yeah, I would nix the vacay which I've been following with ya

I didn't make it out yet :( as luck would have it my little one woke up with a fever and a stomach flu. Been inside with her since then. If I make it out I'll let you know! I need to get to the doctor tomorrow so I'll need the fuel.

I guess it's the times we live....overload of information and question everyone and everything.

Remember back in the day when the weather guy came on TV and you just assumed he/she was right? Now we don't believe anything they say. Those were the days...LOL

Thanks, I can't take credit for it. An acquaintance on s.m. who works w/dogs came up with the idea. I've been a visitor my entire life. We're talking yeaaaars. I'm really worried. We usually stay in the same family-owned/run motels when we come down and I am scared for them too. What Harvey did to Texas was brutal but I think that Irma might top him. I hope everyone leaves the Keys. I'm worried Irma will just flatten them and take out the bridges. I was watching a couple on Periscope and they couldn't find water and they were in Dunedin!
