Wow, that's not very many, especially considering so many people there live on boats. The rain and wind are starting to intensify for us now.

Reportertype, you are new here so I thought I would give you a heads up. After the storm, you need to look in the up to the minute forum for the thread called Wilma check in, and let us know how you made out. So we know you are ok, and we can quit worrying about ya! :D

Hi Cheetah,

I'm hanging out on the opposite coast. We got rain before wind here. It's still pretty low on the freak-out scale ... so far.

I'm still here :banghead:

The winds have been steadily increasing for the past hour. No rain yet.

I've been following the storm forums and some think this might become a Cat 4

Cheetah. I wish you had left. But since you didn't, then stay online with us and let us know what you are seeing and hearing. We will know if you stop that you probably lost electric. Stay inside, and away from windows, and all that other good stuff!

Hi Buzz,

I heard the President of Mexico is going there to Cancun. I hope he gives these poor people some help. I say pictures on TV and it is totally devestated.

By the way Buzz, thank you for all the info you have given us to keep the forum abreast of everything going on with the hurricane. And you too Dark Knight. I've learned so much - enough to know that a big fat eye like we have tonight means the hurricane is not losing any strength but rather maintaining.

Gonna hit the sack with Fox on tonight while I try to go to sleep. Take care Buzz.

Scandi
scandi, I'm waiting to see some footage from Cozumel--Wilma hit the island head-on, as a Category 4--one report, alleged to be from a young guy on Cozumel, said minimal damage---somehow I doubt that he knew what he was talking about--Cozumel got hit harder than Cancun, and the footage from Cancun shows a great amount of damage.

I don't think a Category 4 is realistic--there might be a gust, or two, but the sustained winds were 115 mph, and they thought they might decrease a little to Category 2 before Wilma makes landfall, and then the winds will probably slow just a bit as Wilma crosses Florida.

Up until this morning they were only forcasting 60mph winds for us, so I think everyone thought this would be a weak hurricane when passing over us.

I'm ready and prepared, well except for the tarp on my roof.. and my storm shutters, that I just realized were never fixed from last year, their off track

P.S. I'm way too tired to know what I am typing, plus I just had to take a valium, so I hope I make sense

Yeah, I think so too. I'm not sure who the "pros" are on that board, but some have been way ahead of the NHC all day

LOL, me too!

Actually they gave them to me for a procedure I am supposed to be having on Tuesday. Don't think that's going to happen anyway!

Wow! A cat 3 hurricane, it was a 2 when I went to bed earlier. I woke up at midnight so I could follow the news until the storm is over. The storm surge and random tornados are what scare the hell out of me.

Cheetah, I hope you are still safe, and also anyone else who stayed to ride out the storm.

Buzzm 1, are you still watching the news? Do you ever sleep? LOL!

Wilma is almost a Category 4, with winds at 125 mph, at this time--I am surprised at how fast it seems to be gaining strength. I sleep in, in the mornings W/W.

LOL, poor Buzz has been very busy this summer, I think most of his summer has been spent checking the storm updates and posting them for us. I too have wondered if he ever takes time out to sleep.

Fewer than 10 percent of the Keys' 78,000 residents evacuated, Monroe County Sheriff Richard Roth said.

"I'm disappointed, but I understand it," Roth said. "They're tired of leaving because of the limited damage they sustained during the last three hurricanes."

Wilma was Florida's eighth hurricane since August 2004 and the fourth evacuation of the Keys this year.

FOX is reporting that people living in some of the mobile home parks have been calling to be rescued. How anyone would even think of riding out a hurricane in a mobile home boggles the mind. I hope we don't have the loss of life like with Katrina.

There will always be time to sleep later m/w; plus I can always take an afternoon nap.

I can't believe that the people who chose to stay are now asking someone to come out and rescue them; right in the middle of the storm.

I'll bet a lot of those people are willing to eat their words about "wanting to ride this out where they were."

Hurricane Wilma grew stronger as it charged toward southwest Florida early Monday, packing maximum sustained winds of 125 mph and churning up walls of seawater that could make thousands of Keys residents regret they defied evacuation orders.

Wilma was expected to bring a 17-foot storm surge when it makes landfall before dawn along the state's southwest corner, likely near Naples and Marco Island.

"This is a very dangerous hurricane," said National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield. "People need to stay hunkered down."

At 5 a.m. EDT, Wilma was a powerful Category 3 centered about 55 miles southwest of Naples and moving northeast at about 20 mph with no signs of weakening.

Hurricane-force wind of at least 74 mph extended up to 90 miles from the center and wind blowing at tropical storm-force reached outward up to 230 miles, the hurricane center said.

More than 22,600 people were in shelters across the state. But in the low-lying Florida Keys, not even 10 percent of the Keys' 78,000 residents evacuated, Sheriff Richard Roth said.

That could prove to be a mistake: While Wilma was not expected to make landfall over the Keys, the storm could bring a surge of 8 feet to sections of the low-lying island chain.

"They're going to be in deep trouble," warned Billy Wagner, the senior Monroe County emergency management director. Key West was already experiencing minor street flooding early Monday and a wind gust of 76 mph was measured there. Power outages were reported in both the Keys and along the southwest side of the state.
