Human remains found near Mason City; officials ask public's help (<---Link)

Human remains were located near Mason City, Iowa. They were determined to have been there for 5 to 15 years. The remains are believed to be from a white female between the ages of 20 to 45, with a height between 5 feet to 5 feet, 7 inches tall. And, they're not the remains of Jodi Huisentruit.

Woman's remains found in northern Iowa not those of Jodi Huisentruit, authorities say
Human remains found in rural Mason City more than a week ago may have been there for between five and 15 years, authorities said Wednesday.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call May 20 about someone finding human remains in the 22000 block of 275th Street in rural Mason City, officials said. There, investigators collected the skeletal remains and they were taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.

An autopsy was performed three days later; the remains are believed to be from a white female 20 to 45 years old who stood between 5 feet, 5 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches tall, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said.

Human remains found outside of Mason City
Authorities say an anthropologist was able to determine that the remains may have been there for between 5 to 15 years. The remains are believed to be from a white female between 20-45 years of age, height between 5 foot to 5 foot 7 inches tall.

The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office was able to definitively determine through a forensic odontologist that the remains are not those of Jodi Huisentruit.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation request if you have any information regarding a missing person that fits the description, that you contact the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office at (641) 421-3000.

New info: Sheriff's Office has received more than a dozen calls related to body found in Cerro Gordo Co.

Since news broke Wednesday that a decayed body was found in rural Cerro Gordo County, around a dozen calls have been fielded from relatives of missing people, according to authorities.
Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals said a family was out walking their pets when they stumbled upon the bones May 20.
Pals also said law enforcement “doesn’t know that a crime has been committed” because there has been no identification.
The body, which the Iowa Department of Public Safety said is a white female between 20-45 years old and between 5-foot and 5-7, has been at the location between 5-15 years, authorities said.
The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office says a forensic examination of the teeth found as part of the remains definitively proved they are not the remains of Jodi Huisentruit, a KIMT anchor who disappeared on June 27, 1995.
Pals said officials are not giving out the exact location of where the body was found but it was on private property in the 22000 block of 275th St. The location is a couple miles east of the NIACC campus.

Update: 'I thought it was training. It wasn't,' neighbor says of woman's remains found in rural Mason City

This map shows the 22000 block of 275th Street in Mason City, where law enforcement say skeletal remains of a woman were discovered May 20. The remains are believed to have been there between five and 15 years.

“The sad part is that getting the DNA with the dental records could take 3 months to a year,” Pals said.

A neighbor, Paul Hanson, said he was shocked to hear that human remains had been discovered nearby.

“I was standing over there and I almost fell back when they told me,” Hanson said Thursday, looking over toward the barn and red buildings.

He said he spoke with DCI at length when they interviewed owners from the surrounding properties. Hanson said he didn't want to disclose what he shared with the agents.

Hanson said the DCI and the sheriff’s department were out on the road and another property about a week ago.

“I thought it was just a training thing over there,” he said, pointing at the woods and fields across the road. “It wasn't.”

Hanson said the rural gravel road doesn’t get much traffic.

“We get some traffic from the college, you’ll see some beer cans out here from kids drinking,” Hanson said, motioning toward the road. “Usually -- if I see a car all week -- if any.”

Then how do they know it’s not Jodi? Dentals?

Yes. From folieadeunola's post up above: "The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office says a forensic examination of the teeth found as part of the remains definitively proved they are not the remains of Jodi Huisentruit"

Update on Skeletal Remains Found in Iowa

On the edge of Mason City, it's a discovery that has generated more questions than answers.

“It's a true Jane Doe," Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals said.

It's a story that came to light on May 20th ... but may have begun long before that.

"There were some citizens who were out with a pet in a wooded grassy area and discovered a skeleton ... a partial skeleton, it's not a full skeleton," Pals said.

There's some small amounts of clothing, and personal items," Pals told us. An anthropologist examined the remains: "She aged the bones, 5 to 15 years, a female Caucasian

Wouldn't the release of description of the clothing and personal items to the general public be helpful in identification? It might trigger a memory for a family member....

Definitely a good question, maybe they have to piece together first to be able to give a better description. The remains had been there for a while so I would assume over time the items and remains deteriorated to barely recognizable.

Believe we will hear more about the remains and any additional clues in the next few days or weeks.

Human remains found in Mason City identified as missing woman The remains have been identified as a woman missing from Arkansas since 2008. ETA-By the looks of her picture, it appears she may have been in LE at one time. Very curious as how and why she ended up in Iowa. I really thought this was probably someone local. Also she was found on gravel road off what appears to be a black top road. I never looked up the location before, so that is interesting. Google Maps I'm relieved her family can now have some closure.
