First, this part isn't true

Police in Ottumwa, roughly 85 miles southeast of Des Moines, arrested Grooms a day after the DHS agents asked for the public's help in locating "John Doe."

Because this thread was started in August of 2013, and he was arrested in March of 2014.

Yet Oldenburger said on Thursday that Grooms had been lured into the molestation. Two child pornographers from New Orleans and Ireland were posing as teens and convincing children like Grooms to perform sex acts on Skype calls they recorded and distributed, he said.

Grooms actually believed he was speaking with a teenage girl, according to Oldenburger. The child pornographers, posing as the girl, told him what he had done was "so hot" and asked him to do more, but he would not commit any more sexual abuse, Oldenburger said.

"The abuse was committed at the behest of two men who had, over a long period of time, perfected a technique for duping children into committing sexual acts that they would not otherwise have engaged in," Oldenburger said.

"They were so skillful and so persuasive in their efforts that they successfully convinced hundreds of children to engage in sexual activity while they surreptitiously recorded it."

which is scary and mind blowing at the same time.

"The child was not injured, no pain was inflicted, and the child was too young to even be aware of what was happening," Oldenburger said. "The child suffered no ill effects as a result of Grooms' actions."

Also I disagree with this part. I have been watching research presentations about trauma recently (on youtube) and there is a lot of evidence that just the kid doesn't know what's happening, they DO still suffer ill effects years down the road from it because the body remembers.

I know he is a perp but I couldn't help but think that he was somehow lured into this. His grin is creepy because he is not comfortable with the situation, IMO. I truly hope this was an isolated event for him and he is truly disgusted with himself for his actions.

Wonder if ICE/HSI can use him to capture the other people involved??

I remember this discrepancy. Ii was the 2nd time that ICE/ HSI put out the request. When he was arrested it was his fellow students who identified him on SM. It really was lest than 48 hours after they had put out the latest request for help from the public that his identity was discovered.

I think the difference was that the first request by ICE/HSI was in August, all the students were out of school and engaged in other things. But in March they are all in school and interacting more on SM. On several websites I watched as they ID'd him in post after post and shared it with friends while trying to encourage them to call LE. Finally someone or several did exactly that.

It must have been so frustrating that there was so little response after the first request for the public's help. I think they were as surprised.as anyone that he was still in High School. Also that he was in Iowa and not Texas as they had thought.. It was an amazing and fast response that I witnessed unfolding as we all here diligently worked to find the hat and jacket.

Grooms received a 10-year suspended sentence and five years of supervised release.

He will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Grooms was just 17 in the spring of 2014 when he was arrested for sexually assaulting a one-year-old child.

Why did it take so long to convict him?? Over five years?!
