Illegal immigrant charged with killing Mollie Tibbetts tailed ANOTHER girl in his car | Daily Mail Online
  • Accused killer Cristhian Rivera pulled alongside another girl in his car as she walked through Brooklyn, Iowa, before being accused of Mollie Tibbetts murder
  • The 17-year-old girl's older sibling Bailey Gibson, 18, told DailyMail.com her sister was 'creeped' out by Rivera's advances as he told her she was pretty
  • 'It was more flirty than sexual. She didn’t appreciate it. Even though she knew him a little she felt unsafe and didn't want to talk to him,' Gibson said
  • 'In the end she was really creeped-out by his behavior. She had to keep telling him she wasn't interested,' Gibson added
'It all clicked when we heard the news. It's so scary to think he did something similar with my sister,' added Bailey, who asked that her sibling not be named.

BROOKLYN, Iowa – The Chevy Malibu that investigators linked to Cristhian Rivera, the illegal immigrant suspected of killing Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts, was not registered in Rivera's name, a law enforcement source revealed to Fox News on Wednesday.
The surveillance footage in which the Malibu was seen was not able to capture the vehicle's license plates, but there were "unusual markings" on the car which helped lead investigators track it down, Rahn told said.
The special agent said there were "some distinct features to the vehicle that allowed us to basically search the area for it and just happened that we were able to locate the vehicle, and subsequently identify Mr. Rivera driving the vehicle."

Mollie Tibbetts investigation: Chevy Malibu seen in surveillance video not registered to suspect Rivera, source says

The footage was provided by a resident. It clearly showed Tibbetts running, and also had a clear shot of the Malibu driving back and forth, Rahn told Fox News. The video was "critical" and allowed authorities to zero in on the 24-year-old Rivera, Rahn added.

Rivera was charged with first-degree murder on Tuesday in Tibbetts' death, and was being held Wednesday on a $5 million cash-only bond. During his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon, Rivera looked stoic and refused to speak when given the chance. Rahn said authorities believe this was a "premeditated" attack.

The special agent said there were "some distinct features to the vehicle that allowed us to basically search the area for it and just happened that we were able to locate the vehicle, and subsequently identify Mr. Rivera driving the vehicle."

Mollie Tibbetts murder: Boss describes recent demeanor of suspect in Iowa woman's death

Even after Tibbetts disappeared on July 18 while out for an evening run in the small central Iowa town of Brooklyn, Rivera kept coming to work and "nobody saw a difference" in his demeanor, said Dane Lang, the manager of Yarrabee Farms. His colleagues were stunned Tuesday to learn that he was not only the suspect in Tibbetts' death, but that he had a different real name than what he went by on the farm, Lang said.

"Our employee is not who he said he was," Lang said at a news conference at the farm. "This was shocking to us."

When Rivera was hired in 2014, he presented an out-of-state government-issued photo identification and a matching Social Security card, Lang said. That information was run through the Social Security Administration's employment-verification system and checked out, he said.

Rivera's defense attorney, Allan Richards, acknowledged Wednesday that his client received his paycheck under a different name and that he was uncertain of his immigration status. He said he was prepared to argue that his client was in the country legally, noting that he came to the U.S. as a minor and had worked and paid taxes for years.

"He showed up every day and he did his job. He was patted on his back. They turned a blind eye to the reality of documentation," Richards said.

Mollie Tibbetts' brother to University of Iowa students: Make a friend in her honor

Mollie Tibbetts' older brother had a request of the hundreds gathered on the University of Iowa campus for his sister's vigil: Meet someone you didn't know before, and make a friend .

This, Jake Tibbetts told the crowd, is what Mollie would have done, and what she did do on a regular basis.

"You can always attribute that friendship you just made to my sister, and that would mean the world to her," he said. "Knowing that a thousand people just made a friend tonight in her name."

Some of Mollie Tibbetts' family don't want her death politicized - CNN

"I don't want Mollie's memory to get lost amongst politics," Calderwood told CNN, emphasizing that she's speaking only for herself.

"It's not about race, it's about people joining together to do good," said Calderwood, who posted a similar message on Facebook.

"I also know what Mollie stood for ... and she would not approve," the friend, Breck Goodman, said. "So I don't want her death to be used as propaganda. I don't want her death to be used for more prejudice and for more discrimination, and I don't think she would want that, either."

Hundreds gather to remember Mollie Tibbetts

“The stories you've heard about Mollie over the past month are incredible,” Jake said. “She was incredible. And we uh, we know we're going to miss her dearly.

“What made her so special is that she was like anyone standing here. She loved to run. She loved Harry Potter. She loved the Hawks. She loved her family. She loved her friends. She was goofy. She was clumsy, you know. She made mistakes. She owned up to them. She fought with her siblings, a lot. Um that's what we're going miss the most.

“Because she was so outgoing, take a couple of minutes here and find someone you've never met before and talk to them, meet them, make a new friend tonight because that's what she would do. She'd make friends with every single person in the crowd if she could."

Cristhian Rivera's lawyer said he's in country legally

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said there was no record that Rivera is here legally.

"A search of records by USCIS revealed Rivera did not make any DACA requests nor were any grants given," the statement reads. "We have found no record in our systems indicating he has any lawful immigration status."

Richards said that Rivera came to the U.S. as a minor. The lawyer listed Rivera's employer as having said Rivera was in the country legally, but later on Wednesday, Yarrabee Farms said that Rivera had been working under a fake name.

Cristhian Rivera: Suspect in Mollie Tibbetts' killing gave false ID to employer - CNN

His defense attorney, Allan Richards, said Rivera came to the US as a minor, held a job in the community and has no prior criminal record.

In applying for the job, Rivera provided a state ID and Social Security card that was verified through the Social Security Administration's verification system, according to Lang. But those forms of ID were not of Rivera, he said.

Neither he nor his employees noticed anything suspicious about Rivera's behavior after Tibbetts vanished, he said.

"This guy stayed around for 35 days after he did this," Lang said. "Nobody noticed anything different."
