Immigration agents at dairy farm that employed suspect in Mollie Tibbett’s slaying

Yarrabee Farms said in a statement that federal authorities had asked to visit the farm Thursday. The company says agents met with employees and owners. The company says it's cooperating with investigators. It says it can't provide additional details because the investigation is ongoing.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation spokesman Mitch Mortvedt said that his agency's officers were on the scene assisting investigators from the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, who took the lead.

The activity comes one day after The Associated Press reported that the suspect in Tibbetts' death, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, worked at the farm using the name John Budd.

Immigration officials spend 2 hours at dairy farm that employed suspect in Mollie Tibbetts' death

Assistant DCI Director Mitch Mortvedt said there were “one or two” state agents at Yarrabee Farms Thursday in an assisting capacity, but he deferred further comment to the federal Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, whose agents he said were handling the matter.

“That is a federal issue so I am deferring to DHS and ICE for that,” Mortvedt said.

Agents at dairy farm that employed suspect in Iowa slaying

Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the county sheriff's office spent two hours at Yarrabee Farms in Brooklyn, Iowa, on Thursday morning. They appeared to be looking around the property and talking to workers.

The farm has said that at least a couple of its roughly dozen employees left the area following Rivera's arrest, which sent fear through the immigrant community. The dairy, which has about 800 cows and is owned by a prominent family with Republican Party ties, says it received dozens of angry phone calls and some death threats.

Farm managers have said Rivera presented an out-of-state identification and a Social Security number when he was hired in 2014, and that they were unaware of his true identity until his Aug. 21 arrest. The company did not use the government's voluntary E-Verify system to check his identity and eligibility to work, although it's unclear whether that would have made a difference.

Immigrant charged in Mollie Tibbetts' death was known by alias

The Mexican man charged with killing an Iowa college student was known for years on the dairy farm where he worked by another name: John Budd.

Yarrabee Farms is facing scrutiny over whether its managers had any idea that Cristhian Bahena Rivera was in the country illegally before the slaying of Mollie Tibbetts.

The name under which Rivera worked for the last four years was confirmed by three people with knowledge of his employment history who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Mollie Tibbetts' suspected killer reportedly used alias 'John Budd' at work

Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, was known as John Budd while he was employed at Yarrabee Farms, according to The Associated Press.

Three individuals with information pertaining to the suspect’s employment confirmed the name used to hire and pay him during his time at the farm. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information during an ongoing criminal investigation.

Official government documents also showed the John Budd alias, one source told the outlet.

BGM Football Carrying Community On Angel Wings

"They all knew her their whole life so they are doing it for her." The Initials of Mollie Tibbets, Scott's sister on the front of the Bears' jerseys, set in a heart with wings. "Basically, it touches their heart and so they can keep her in their heart forever."

For a few hours each week football can clear their minds from a heartbreak they'll never forget but it's never far removed. The initials M.C.T for Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts are on the back of the helmet. It has become a view many opponents are seeing often as Bears players speed ahead of them into the end zone. Jordyn said, "It's like a little piece of like pride knowing that we are doing all this for her."

Data show that illegal immigration does not lead to more crime. Period.

The punch line is the same: Illegal immigration does not increase (violent) crime.

As reported by NPR in May, four scientific studies, including one that I was part of, provide no evidence linking illegal immigration to crime. This is the case from research completed at the national level over a three decade time period by University of Wisconsin sociologist Michael Light. It also includes research by the Cato Institute comparing conviction and arrest rates in Texas. And it includes my own co-authored research published in Migration Letters showing that young undocumented immigrants self-reported committing less crime than either their legal immigrant or U.S.-born peers.

SWISHER, IA (KCRG-TV9)-- More than 500 people took part in a memorial ride from Brooklyn to Cedar Rapids in honor of Mollie Tibbetts.

Their first stop was at Black Squirrel Tap in Swisher. The event was put on by members the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department.

They didn't think expect the massive turnout. Firefighter Jeremy Mann says, "When we first did this, we only ordered 70 bandanas and then seeing how many people were interested we upped that to 200 thinking that would be enough, and by no means was that even close to enough.” Half the money raised will go to the fire fund, and the other half used to fund a scholarship in honor of Mollie.

Cristhian Bahena Rivera asked the government for an initial $5,000 to pay a private investigation firm to work on his case.

Rivera has had two legal teams represent him. The most recent one is a husband-wife team from Marshalltown. Chad and Jennifer Frese submitted paperwork on Wednesday, informing the court that they had hired a private investigator, from Gratias Investigations in Des Moines.

"An investigator is necessary to offer Defendant assistance in this matter of particulars which are reasonably obvious given the attention this case has received. However, the Defendant will not specify each and every detail as to his reasons."

Mollie Tibbetts murder suspect says his memory was 'blocked.' Could that aid his defense?
The full facts of the case are not yet known. But given the current information, several criminal-defense attorneys said the defense of diminished responsibility is one avenue for Bahena Rivera's lawyers to consider.

If Bahena Rivera can prove he was not in the right state of mind to form the intent to kill Tibbetts, he could avoid a first-degree murder conviction, which could spare him a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Mollie Tibbetts' Suspected Killer Wasn't Known For Having Memory Loss, His Uncle Says
Radilla said he was unfamiliar with his nephew’s ability to block his memory.

“I don’t recall him ever saying that,” says the uncle, who also was mourning the loss of the spunky, energetic Tibbetts. Her disappearance has drawn national attention and come to be best associated with her smiling image on missing persons posters all over town and the surrounding area.

“It’s difficult for me to see them” Radilla, a father of two young boys, admitted about the posters.

“This is about the loss of a young woman,” he says. “I feel for her parents.”

Mollie Tibbetts' accused killer faces arraignment Wednesday in Iowa court
Defense attorney Chad Frese told the Des Moines Register Friday that he requested that the arraignment be conducted in open court.

"Since this is a class A felony for a homicide, I want it to be on the record so there’s no confusion whatsoever," Frese told the paper. "Because his education is about a fifth- or sixth-grade education in the country of Mexico."

On Wednesday, a judge granted a motion for the services of a private investigator to assist Rivera’s defense at public expense, KWWL-TV reported Friday. Rivera said in an affidavit attached to the motion that he was indigent. It said he had no job and no cash. It said he has expenses of $270 a month in car payments.

Previously, the judge appointed a Spanish interpreter at public expense to assist the defense. Rivera’s family is paying for his lawyers, the Register has reported.

Man charged in stabbing death of Mollie Tibbetts to be arraigned Wednesday

Prosecutors filed the trial information and minutes of testimony last week, which usually indicates a defendant will make a written not guilty plea, but Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, may make a plea in person at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. A trial date also will be set.

Rivera’s lawyers have asked the court to provide $5,000 to the defense for a Des Moines private investigator at public expense. The request for public funds by the defense is not unusual. Most defendants are granted public funds to aid them in their defense.

A judge granted the public money last week.

In court Wednesday, Rivera pleaded 'not guilty' to first-degree murder charges. He also waived his right to a speedy trial.

The judge set a trial date for April 16, 2019, with a pretrial conference on April 4, 2019.

Rivera wore headphones and listened to the proceedings with the help of a Spanish translator, because Rivera has a limited understanding of English.
