Goodale's hearing expected next:

Both defendants are expected in court Tuesday, April 18 for a hearing ahead of Miller’s scheduled trial. Miller is scheduled to appear at 10am ET. Goodale is scheduled to appear at 11:15am ET.

So - Miller took a plea deal - so no trial on 4/21/23. I am surprised!

And Goodale also has plea agreement - was going to testify against Miller.

Interesting out come here!

FAIRFIELD, Iowa – One of the teens charged with the murder of a Fairfield High School Spanish teacher has pleaded guilty in the case.

During a hearing Tuesday morning at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 17-year-old Willard Miller withdrew his not guilty plea in the 2021 death of 66-year-old Nohema Graber and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

Iowa Assistant Attorney General Scott Brown told the judge the state would recommend a minimum prison sentence of 30 years with a possibility of life. Because Miller was 16 at the time of the murder, he is not subject to the mandatory term of life in prison.

During the hearing, Brown said Miller planned the murder.

A hearing for the other teen charged in the case, Jeremy Goodale, is scheduled for 10:15 a.m.

April 18, 2023

Both Miller and Jeremy Goodale were charged with first-degree murder.

Miller and Goodale were 16 at the time. Both are 17 now.

Prosecutors say both of the teens struck Graber with a baseball bat and destroyed evidence in the case. Miller's lawyer states he denies hitting Graber with a bat.

In Iowa, the penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is life in prison. The judge said Miller will not receive mandatory life without the possibility of parole because he is a minor.

He will be responsible for restitution and other costs.

Goodale is also expected in court this morning. It's unclear what that hearing is about. KCCI will monitor that hearing.

FAIRFIELD, Iowa (KCRG) - One of the teens accused of killing a Fairfield teacher has pleaded guilty to First Degree murder.
Willard Miller pleaded guilty during a hearing on Tuesday morning. A trial had been set to begin on Friday.

Willard Miller and Jeremy Goodale were charged with the killing of Nohema Graber in November 2021.

Her body was found in Chautauqua Park concealed under a tarp, wheelbarrow, and railroad ties. An investigation at the scene indicated Graber had “suffered inflicted trauma to the head,” according to criminal complaints.

Prosecutors said Miller planned the murder with Goodale, and that both acted in the attack that resulted in the death of Graber. They agreed to recommend a sentence between 30 years and life in prison with the possibility of parole.

During the hearing, defense attorneys for Miller said he denies striking Graber, but he admitted to acting as a lookout during the attack.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — One of two Iowa teenagers charged in the beating death of an Iowa high school teacher has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder

Willard Miller changed his plea to guilty Tuesday morning and admitted that he served as a lookout while Jeremy Goodale beat 66-year-old Nohema Graber, their Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School. Her body was found in a Fairfield park in November 2021.

Prosecutors said the evidence shows that both Miller and Goodale struck Graber with a bat. Investigators have said the attack was possibly regarding a dispute over grades in Graber’s class.

Prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence between 30 years and life in prison with the possibility of parole as part of an agreement with Miller.

Goodale and Miller were both charged as adults because of the severity of the crime, but they weren’t subject to a mandatory sentence of life without parole because they were 16 at the time Graber was killed.

Actually Jeremy is now 18 - had a bday 3/29

Live hearing:

Under oath, Goodale states he brought nothing to the park where he agreed to help Miller kill Ms. Graber.

Miller brought the bat and planned the murder and he agreed to help.

Miller first struck Ms. Graber with the bat as she walked on the trail and Goodale helped Miller move her off the trail when Goodale also hit the victim with Miller's bat and killed her. (He is not denying he helped cause her death).

ETA: Goodale is emotional, breathing heavily - listening to the judge. (Unlike smug Miller - his codefendant).
