Very sad case and looks like there are people in the community who know more than what they are saying. Regina vanished two days before her 15th birthday and her remains were later found by horseback riders.There were rumors that her death was connected to an unpaid drug debt.

BURLEY — A witness at a Friday court hearing said he saw Gilberto Rodriguez dump Regina Krieger’s body in the Snake River 24 years ago.

Rodriguez was charged in February with first-degree murder in the 1995 death of the Burley teenager. Court documents at that time described similar witness accounts that led to Rodriguez’s arrest, but Friday’s court hearing was the first time witnesses in the case have publicly described what they saw and heard. The eight-hour preliminary hearing adjourned without lawyers finishing their arguments.

A witness in the case against the man accused of killing Regina Krieger has a history of lying to police and in court. But this time, he appears credible, a judge said May 8. Cody Thompson testified April 26 that he was there on the 1995 night Gilberto Flores Rodriguez went to 14-year-old Krieger’s bedroom and came out with a body wrapped in bedding. In a preliminary hearing May 8, Rodriguez’s attorney said Thompson and other witnesses were unbelievable, but Minidoka County Magistrate Judge Rick Bollar said he disagreed and he sent the first-degree murder case to district court.

Rhonda Hunnel wants to see justice for her daughter’s killing, but after 24 years, the Henderson mother is even more focused on another goal: bringing people together by sharing the teen’s story. Hunnel said she wants to spread “Gina’s hope,” her vision of what her daughter, Regina “Gina” Krieger, would have wanted from the world. “To me, Gina’s hope is all of this, to bring everybody together and stop this division and lack of sympathy,” Hunnel said. “… That’s what I learned from losing my daughter.”

Request for change of trial venue filed in Regina Krieger murder case

The motion says the change is needed because of extensive pretrial publicity on the murder and the case, social media commentary from a Facebook cold-case group and other places, Krieger’s mother’s book “Snake in the Grass,” a magistrate judge’s comment that he believed a witness during the preliminary hearing, and community rumors.

The motion also cited possible COVID-19 screenings for potential jurors that would require more bailiffs at the Cassia County Judicial Center, whereas the Ada County facility has more staff and entrances.

After being postponed due to COVID-19, a jury trial for Gilberto Flores Rodriguez, who is charged with first-degree murder in a 1995 Cassia County teen’s death, was scheduled for January 2021.

In the Rodriguez case, the court will send out 1,200 jury questionnaires and plans to call about 600 potential jurors in for the pool.

People ages 65 and over can opt out of serving on the jury.

The jurors will be brought into two courtrooms to be sworn in and fill out the questionnaire in waves over several days.
