CRIME ALERT

At approximately 10:22 pm on November 9, 2021 the Wheeling Police Department received a Missing Persons report after family members became concerned that 21 year old Ms. Ja’nya Murphy had not been to work, nor had been in contact with family members since the previous day.

Ms. Murphy lived with her one year old daughter Jaclyn “Angel” Dobbs at 365 Inland Drive in Wheeling. After initial attempts to contact Ms. Murphy failed, Wheeling Officers with the assistance of the Wheeling Fire Department were able to access the balcony of Ms. Murphy’s apartment and found the door unlocked.

An ensuing check for well-being revealed Ms. Murphy had apparently been murdered and Angel to be missing. Wheeling Police along with the Northwest Suburban Major Crimes Assistance Team are actively working to secure the safe return of Angel and to identify and apprehend those responsible. At this time we are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Angel.

The victim, Ja’nya Murphy was a 2018 graduate of Stevenson High School and lived with her daughter in Wheeling.

Please call 847-459-2690 with any information.

Ja’nya Murphy, 21, was found about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in her home — “apparently murdered,” police said — and her 1-year-old, Jaclyn “Angel” Dobbs, was missing, according to Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Al Steffen.

Murphy was “targeted,’’ said Steffen, who did not elaborate except to say this was not a “random thing.”

Steffen said he had no indication if Angel was safe, and a police statement indicated they were investigating the situation as a kidnapping.

The cause of death was unclear, he said, but "based upon what the officers discovered would lead a reasonable person to believe that a homicide was committed."

Steffen said it appeared Murphy had been assaulted and they are eager to find her daughter.

Steffen said Murphy would drop Angel off to relatives before work, but she didn't drop off the baby on Tuesday and she didn't show up to her retail job. Murphy's family last talked with her Monday.

Young mom found murdered in Wheeling apartment; 1-year-old daughter missing, police say

Police are urgently searching for a 1-year-old girl believed kidnapped after the killing of her mother, who was found dead late Tuesday night in her Wheeling apartment.

"We really need the public's assistance right now," Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Al Steffen said Wednesday. "They might be able to connect a link we don't have."

Officers conducting a well-being check discovered 21-year-old Ja'nya Murphy dead at her apartment on Inland Drive, authorities said.

Steffen declined to say Wednesday how investigators believe Murphy died but said evidence at the scene made clear that there was an assault.

Murphy's daughter, Jaclyn "Angel" Dobbs, was missing from the apartment and is believed to be in danger.

"We know that because the child is missing and not with her loved ones," Steffen said.

Police have not yet issued an Amber Alert for Angel because they don't have information about whom she might be with or what kind of vehicle may be involved, Steffen said. Investigators have been in touch with the girl's father, he said.

"We have no persons of interest as of yet," Steffen said. "There's no indication that anyone would want to hurt (Murphy)."

According to police, Murphy's family members filed a missing persons report at 10:22 p.m. Tuesday, after becoming concerned that she hadn't shown up at her job at a store and hadn't been in contact with relatives since Monday night.

Steffen said family members were so concerned that after they had been to her apartment a number of times and there was no answer, police and firefighters went to the apartment to gain access. They used a ladder to get onto the apartment's balcony, where the door was unlocked.

"It was readily apparent to the officers that went in that it was a crime scene," Steffen said.

Investigators, including those from more than 20 police departments who are part of a regional task force, are trying to piece together the last 24 to 48 hours of Murphy's life. The probe includes searching for anyone who she may have been in contact with or spent time with, and other details of her personal history.

This is devastating. It's clear from what I can see that she absolutely adored her daughter. Imagine being murdered and the last thing in your mind is the terrifying realization that your baby will be left alone with your killer. She couldn't protect her baby and I'm sure she tried with all she had until the very end. Knowing her baby could be in danger or even killed too is just horrifying.

I just hope that dear baby is found alive & healthy and someone loving & kind will raise her and keep her mom's memory alive.

I'm willing to bet that the murderer didn't get away without at least some good scratches or bite marks. Mamas can be fierce protecting their babies!

I hope there is DNA evidence left at the scene of the crime, but the killer could have just shot her in the back or while she was sleeping without her even knowing what was happening. How did the killer get inside? Did she let him/her in? Was the killer someone she trusted? Not much info to go on. I'm guessing it's someone close to her who wanted that baby, so hopefully the baby is not harmed. I feel like someone knows something. Wonder if a reward would help?

TY!

Police said they believe she was in a maroon 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan with the Illinois license plate FP139293. When the vehicle was found in Missouri, Jaclyn was not inside of it. Police said Jaclyn may be in danger.

The Wheeling Police Department is requesting any information from the public regarding sightings of Jaclyn A. Dobbs, or the maroon Dodge Grand Caravan. Any individual with information regarding the whereabouts of Jaclyn or the van should contact the Wheeling Police Department at (847) 459-2632, or call 9-1-1.

I wonder if the Dodge Caravan was Ja’nya‘s vehicle? Mother murdered and baby missing - may be in danger? Why are they downplaying it? Sounds like that baby is in grave danger. IMO
It's possible the van is Ja'nya's but yesterday they said...

"they don't have information about whom she might be with or what kind of vehicle may be involved,..."

Jaclyn is still missing Thursday, two days after her mother was found dead in their Wheeling home Tuesday night.

Police said they believe Murphy was strangled, and that Jaclyn was taken away in a maroon 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan with Illinois license plate FP139293. The vehicle was later located in western Missouri, but Jaclyn was not with the vehicle and is believed to be in danger.

Police do not believe Jaclyn is in Missouri.
