What kind of evidence would lead LE to determine the attack was targeted and not random, I wonder. No forced entry, information on computers or cell phones? Nothing taken? Just wondering what kind of evidence leads to that determination.
That door looked intact when they removed it, so I think that factored in a bit.

Article says that when they lived at their former residence, the family reported a threat received on Facebook in 2022.
If the threat was reported, it may more likely indicate an "external" threat from outside the family.

Maybe an "internal" or family based threat would be more likely to be dealt with "in house" unless it was viewed as particularily serious?

IIRC, LE is saying that they believe the murders took place between 9 p.m. on Saturday night and 5 a.m. on Sunday morning. So presumably one of the family members spoke to someone on the phone at 9 p.m. Saturday night, or exchanged emails or texts.

And sadly, the coroner must have determined that by 5 a.m. the family members were deceased.

Yeah. I guess there was a phone call around 9. I think the 5 comes from the fact that the female victim didn’t show up for work at 6AM. Perhaps she would have had to have been ready by then, and the scene showed that she wasn’t.

An article published today in Spanish (newspaper El Nuevo Dia, Puerto Rico) interviews Zoraida's cousin, Raul Santiago Bartolomei, who lives in the Island and is a professor at the UPR. Some details provided:

- although Zoraida was born in IL, she lived 15 years in PR. She returned to IL 12 years ago.
- the couple was married.
- the couple purposely had inverted 12 hrs work schedules to ensure one of them was always home.
- she worked in retail

The funeral expenses donations have already exceeded the original target of 28k. The family disclosed the kids names Adriel (10) and Diego (7).

Comments left in the Go Fund Me page state that at some point the husband worked at Goodwill. One of them worked at Meijer (no name was provided). Some members of their church congregation also left comments.

Sounds like a murder/suicide attempt, just without the murder.

“The vehicle then tried to evade officers, resulting in a single-vehicle crash. Following the crash, the vehicle caught on fire.

Police then heard what they believed to be two gunshots. As they approached the vehicle, they located a woman with a gunshot wound in critical condition and a man with a gunshot wound who was deceased.

The investigation is ongoing and police do believe the persons of interest had a motive for the murder.”

Ok. This is different from the article I posted. This one says there may actually be a motive, and this wasn’t random.

“Burne said police have developed evidence that has shown a "nexus" and a possible motive between the suspect and the family in Romeoville, but declined to reveal details.”

The family of Zoraida just posted a note on Tweeter/X. It's in Spanish (attached) and very general. The family is holding together, the investigation is ongoing and they can't comment. They thank everyone for their support and solidarity.

From the 9/20/23 quoted MSM link:

Deputy Chief Chris Burne said in a news conference on Wednesday that "within hours" of discovering the victims, police had developed a person of interest.

Nathaniel Huey Jr., 31, of Streamwood, was identified as a person of interest, as well as a woman with a relationship to Huey, Burne said.

The woman, whose name was not released by police, was reported by her family as a missing endangered person from Streamwood on Tuesday night, Burne said.

Romeoville Police then issued a statewide bulletin, believing Huey to be a credible suspect, Burne said. Wednesday morning, the Catoosa, Oklahoma Police Department got an alert on a digital license plate reader for the suspect vehicle.

Oklahoma police tracked down the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, Burne said. The car crashed while eluding police, and caught on fire.

Officers then heard two noises, believed to be gunshots, and found a woman with a gunshot wound, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Burne said. A man in the driver's seat was found dead with a gunshot wound. Police believe the man to be Huey.

"This is still an active and evolving investigation and this portion of the incident is still unfolding," Burne said.

A man sought in connection to the slaying of a family of four in the Chicago suburb of Romeoville was found dead inside a burning car in Oklahoma, authorities said Wednesday.

Nathaniel Huey Jr., a 31-year-old from Streamwood, Illinois, and a woman "with a relationship" to him were both called a "person of interest" before the woman was reported missing and in danger by her family on Tuesday night, Romeoville Deputy Chief Chris Burne told reporters.

A car linked to the man was spotted by a license plate reader in Catoosa, Oklahoma, just outside of Tulsa — about 650 miles from the crime scene — when officers allegedly tried to stop the vehicle but it sped away, officials said.

The car crashed and caught on fire as “officers on scene heard two noises believed to be gun shots," Burne said.

Officers found a critically wounded woman inside the vehicle and the man fatally shot in the driver's seat, Burne added.

That man in the driver's seat is "believed to be Huey," according to a police statement.

The fiery crash led to lanes of westbound Interstate 44, near Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, to be temporarily shut down at about 11:30 a.m. CDT, NBC affiliate KJRH reported.

Police identified the suspect as 31-year old Nathaniel Huey Jr. of Streamwood, Illinois, but did not release the woman's identity.

Burne did not reveal a motive for the killings but said that evidence shows a "nexus between the suspect and the victim."

Police heard two gunshots inside the car after the crash and found Huey dead, and the woman critically injured, according to Burne.
