Too bad they didn't nab him on firearms before he killed an entire family.
Unfortunately, I don't think felon-in-possession is easily enforced and/or prosecuted. I just spent 90 mins completing a juror questionnaire for a trial expected to last Sept 28, through November (rival gang shooting). Given each defendant was also being charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, you know they were likely convicted felons who lost their right to possess a firearm yet there were plenty of guns here. Acquiring guns at gun shows and background checks? Not here! We're talking Snapchat and beach parks surrounded by $4M+ homes. I agree with @mickey2942 -- guns are easy to acquire anywhere in the US.

Killing at Houghton Beach Park during an apparent gun sale

“The three acted in concert to rob victim Cyrus Mason of his AM-15 (Anderson Manufacturing) assault rifle, shot him multiple times on the swim dock of a popular public park [Houghton Beach Park dock located in the 5900 block of Lake Washington Blvd] and killed him in the process,” wrote Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Terence Carlstrom in charging documents filed Feb. 17.

Two juvenile witnesses told police that they had accompanied Mason to the park to perform a firearm transaction, trading an AM-15 assault rifle for a pistol and $500 cash. The transaction was set up on Snapchat. Mason carried the rifle in an ukulele case.

I am trying to figure out, if we are considering Ermalinda Palomo a victim? It sounds like her family wants to make it appear this way. But, apparently, she was engaged to the perpetrator, and had been with him as a couple for several years.

Just because she lived with this guy doesn't mean she participated in the crime.
Police aren't releasing anymore details, so we don't know her involvement.

I heard about this crash on Nextdoor while in Oklahoma. I’m shocked to learn the back story. The killer seemed to be a ticking time bomb. I wonder why he killed this entire family and their dogs. What evil! So senseless and tragic.

From looking at the pictures of the couple I assume he was a peach in the beginning. When things began to go bad in his life or the real man emerged, she might have feared trying to leave him. Seen these cases before. I doubt she wanted to murder a entire family. At least I hope not.
But all speculation and not fact.

The family of a woman who was with the prime suspect in the murder of a Romeoville family are denying her involvement in the incident as they process their own shock and grief.

[..]

Ivec said Palomo had five kids of her own and grandchildren, none of whom are Huey's children. Ivec also said her family is not aware of any connection between Palomo and the family in Romeoville.

[..]

Romeoville police said Thursday they have no updates on the investigation but are confident they know the motive as they said there's a clear connection to the family.

I currently am.

Ermalinda Palomo was reported as Missing and Endangered so she's a victim, thus far. She's been described as a nice person and warm mother.

Sept 22, 2023, 4:23pm CDT
she was nowhere near the far southwestern suburb when the family of four was killed, a lawyer for Palomo’s family said

“One of our cameras gave us two notifications — one of the same vehicle as the individual that was of interest in [Romeoville’s] quadruple homicide, and a female that had been listed as missing or endangered,” Catoosa Police Chief Ronnie Benight told NBC Chicago.

EP updated her cover photo on 9/2 -- a large, beautiful, extended family (including NH), probably Labor Day weekend gathering. Condolences to her five children, family, and friends.

She has been identified by police as “a person of interest” in the Romeoville mass slaying, but a lawyer said Friday that the Streamwood woman killed alongside the chief suspect — her fiancé — in Oklahoma is herself a victim.

A friend described Ermalinda Palomo as “a loving mother, sister and daughter” and the “most loving grandmother her grandchildren can have.”

And she was nowhere near Romeoville when the family of four was killed in the far southwestern suburb last weekend, a lawyer for Palomo’s family said.

“She is a victim, too,” said attorney John Paul Ivec.

Ermalinda Palomo, 50, was identified publicly for the first time Thursday by attorney John Paul Ivec.

Palomo and her fiancé, 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., were both sought by police in the killings of Alberto Rolon, 38; Zoraida Bartolomei, 32; and their 9- and 7-year-old sons in the southwest Chicago suburb of Romeoville.

Police caught up with the couple Wednesday in Oklahoma after locating Huey’s car in a department store parking lot. They waited until Huey and Palomo exited the store and got in the vehicle before attempting to pull it over.

The chase began after Huey sped away. The car then crashed and caught on fire. At that point, Huey pulled a gun and fatally shot Palomo before turning the weapon on himself, according to Ivec.

“She was not there in Romeoville. She was asleep. Unfortunately, she is not here to speak for herself,” Ivec said Thursday, according to Chicago NBC affiliate WMAQ. “She did not shoot herself.”

The Romeoville police department is trying to figure this out as well.

OK, so if Paloma was home asleep while Huey killed the family, then what? He drove to her home and convinced her, lured her or forced her to get in the car with him ?

What did she think was going on when she was in the store with him?

We know the Romeoville victims were killed late Saturday or early Sunday morning, and NH/EP didn't leave their home in Streamwood, IL until Tuesday night. And by 11 AM on Wednesday, they were both fatally wounded on I-44 outside of Tulsa, OK. In other words, seems NH had a couple of days to convince her to be his ride or die, and then he shot her in the head!

Finally, this is the first time I've located MSM confirmation of a police bulletin on Tuesday citing NH was aware police were investigating him for the murders, and that he stopped going to work to follow police.

Family members said Palomo was home in Streamwood when the Romeoville murders occurred, Ivec said.

Romeoville police only identified Huey as a suspect in a bulletin that was issued Tuesday.

“He is aware that police are investigating him for this offense and his behavior has become irrational and erratic,” the Romeoville police bulletin said. “Nathaniel stopped going to work, has driven recklessly to follow police involved in the investigation, and his whereabout are now unknown.”

The same bulletin listed Huey’s vehicle as a GMC Envoy and its license plate number, providing information that apparently led to the police pursuit in Oklahoma.
