Elkhart community comes together for two young girls after mom goes missing
Police continue to investigate the disappearance of Anastacia Reyes-Cortes
The Elkhart community is coming together to help two young girls during the holiday season, while police continue to search for their missing mother. Anastacia Reyes-Cortes, 35, of Elkhart was last seen shopping alone at a Kroger store more than three months ago. Her car was later found damaged by fire miles away in Wakarusa. Police are investigating but there are no updates in the case.

The woman's family hasn't heard from her since, and now people are trying to give her two girls some joy during this time of sadness.

Nine-year-old Maria and 6-year-old Erika Ortega are Anastacia's two daughters.

There's a picture on the family's refrigerator that one of the girls drew, and translated in Englsh, it says "For my mommy."

"I miss my mom," Erika said.

Anastacia Reyes-Cortes was featured tonight on Cold Case Files on local TV. Has a review of the case. She walked kids to school then walked to El Paraiso Supermarket. The receipt and groceries were in the home.

Price also says around 10:10am there was contact between the cell phones of Ana and Reveriano. He says the call was not long, and the details of that conversation are based on Reveriano's account of the call. Police say Reveriano told them the two talked about her plans to go to Kroger and El Paraiso.

That was the last anyone can account for Ana's whereabouts. From there, police say, she vanished.

She wasn't at home that afternoon when friends came to pick her up for work.
And her van was gone -- despite the fact that Anastacia doesn't drive.

Later the families burned out van was found...

The location where the van was found is not on a busy street. In fact, many believe it is not somewhere you would know about unless you were somewhat familiar with the area. And that is one of the issues that is bothering some people who know Anastacia. Reveriano works about a mile away and Ana's family believes he may know more than he is letting on.

At first I thought we had a case where the husband for once wasn't responsible....but now I think it is becoming clear that he most certainly is responsible. :notgood: I find it strange that he mentions they talked about her plans to go to the store but according to the timeline, if she talked to him around 10:00 a.m. she had already went to the stores and was home. There were no other plans to go to those stores again. I wonder what really happened on that phone conversation that obviously caused him to leave work and go home. Should be easy enough to check and see if there was a gap at work where he wasn't seen.

Ya, she talked about going to the store when she already went... I think the husband got mad at her on that 10:10 AM phone and rushed over there on his lunch hour and killed her. Left her body in the van somewhere away from the home until later when he could dispose of the body and burn the van. Now they just have to find the evidence.

There was another hispanic woman with a family Delia Lerma, that disappeared in South Bend in 2007. She too just "went to the store" later found stabbed in her van. Her husband is the probable POI, but never arrested. Maybe word got out....kill your wife "when she goes to the store", have van to tote body and get away with it.

Investigators say her husband, Lucio Lerma, is their sole person of interest in the case, though no one was ever arrested or charged in the homicide. http://articles.southbendtribune.com/2012-12-19/news/35919983_1_delia-lerma-lucio-lerma-husband

Then, on The 28th, a horrifying discovery in Wakarusa: the missing van was found burned out behind a cluster of businesses. A maintenance worker found the van behind a building on Ward Street.

"It was more just tucked behind a building, maybe a couple feet into a corn field where the vehicle clearly had been burned. And nobody saw it. We can only assume that it was burned under the cover of darkness because it didn't get reported as an active fire. It was only after that the maintenance guy found the vehicle after it had burned itself out," says Price.

The video is now up on the site and I finally got to see it. Anastasia's sister says that the husband was very angry that Anastasia bought the van and that she was going to learn how to drive. She finds it ironic that the van was burned and feels he was responsible for her sister's disappearance.

LE said the the husband was at work that day but that no one, not even the husband has been cleared. The husband said he took a lie detector test and that he passed. LE just says that the husband has been cooperative with investigators, they don't say anything about the test. The FBI is now involved in the case. The girls are getting counseling through school.

Does it say what the husband does for a living? I wonder how much actual supervision he has and if he would have been able to get away to do this without anybody noticing? Did he leave his place of work on his lunch hour? That hour would not be supervised. Sounds like he did not like her trying to establish some independence!! He maybe prefers the type of woman that doesn't go against his authority? Poor girl!! :(

I believe he is/was a blue collar worker in one of many small Elkhart factories. Usually they have 1/2 hour for lunch, but still time to kill IMO.

I agree! And evidence shows that she did indeed end up back at home after her shopping, and that she talked to him around 10:00 a.m. then suddenly is missing. He is the only one with a motive. There wasn't a break in, I assume. The police need to search the home!

Ugh. Tragic.
I thought it was weird that she had a vehicle but didn't drive. So very sad. I hope she gets justice. Her daughters deserve it.
RIP Anastacia.

Now that her body was found police are" working backwards" to find out what happened. I hope the killer had his cell phone on him as he drove her body out to Bristol. She was last seen in Elkhart. "Shortly after that, investigators found her burned van behind a factory in Wakarusa." So, someone had to give the killer a ride from Wakarusa to back home in Elkhart. Watch those friends phones and see where they went around that time.

Almost a year later and no news on how she died or if foul play is suspected. I hope they catch whoever did this.
