The Crawfordsville Police Department is investigating a missing person case involving Crawfordsville resident James “Jimmy” Frank Popp.

Family members contacted the Crawfordsville Police Department last Thursday evening regarding his disappearance. It was the first time anyone had contacted authorities although the last time family members had contact with Popp was on the morning of June 7.

According to family members, Popp was heading to Indianapolis. No one has had contact with him since.

According to family members, his phone was last pinged on 82nd Street on the east side of Indianapolis, but he has not had any social media activity since his disappearance.

How was he traveling to Indianapolis? It would help to have a vehicle description if there is one.

Crawfordsville Police Det. Bob Rivers said that despite a lot of leads, no one has found Crawfordsville resident James “Jimmy” Frank Popp, who has not been heard from since the morning of June 7.

“There’s been a boat load of speculation but nothing solid to go off of yet,” Rivers said.

Marchele Hall, Deputy Administrator for the Marion County Coroner’s Office, told The Paper Tuesday that two bodies found in Indianapolis, one of which was located in the same general area where Popp’s phone was last believed to be, are confirmed as not Popp.

Police told The Paper that they believe the two cases are unrelated.

“In the case of Mr. Popp, nothing has been very solid,” Rivers said. “It is rumored and thought he went to the Indianapolis area but we have nothing concrete to confirm that. Obviously, it’s been almost a month and no one has heard from (Popp) and that is quite concerning.”

While authorities are still working to identify the individual, the family of a missing Crawfordsville man believe the remains are likely that of James “Jimmy” Frank Popp, who they haven’t heard from since last month.
Autopsy on human remains planned for Saturday
Awful. :( Noting:

DNA testing will be used to make a positive identification, which Montgomery County Coroner Darren Forman said can take up to four weeks. The autopsy performed Saturday in Terre Haute will determine the manner and cause of death. Those results could take roughly six weeks, Forman said.

Until then, investigators are somewhat at a standstill and Montgomery County Chief Deputy Matt McCarty said Friday that no additional information could be released because of the ongoing investigation.

It’s unclear how long the remains had been there before they were discovered off a county road southwest of Crawfordsville. Authorities returned to the area Friday morning to finish collecting evidence from the scene with help from Indiana State Police crime scene investigators and a University of Indianapolis forensic anthropology/archaeology team.

The human remains found in July in a rural area of Montgomery County were officially identified as the Crawfordsville man who went missing in June.
