I'm looking at my xeroxes of the version that appeared in the physical paper, and it looks like both Ellettsville sketches are included, in a timeline that runs along side of the article, that might not be in the version you saw. The two Ellettsville sketches actually look like two different guys. (It says one of the guys is "a pickup truck driver accused of grabbing an 18-year-old in Ellettsville". And the other guy is "accused of pursuing a woman outside the Bigfoot Food Store in Ellettsville".)

Regarding law enforcement not releasing things, all this talk of sketches being released reminds me of the Bar Manager's sketch of Mystery Man that was never released, as far as I can tell.

In other news, in what could be seen as a grim metaphor for lack of safety of women at IU, a 300-pound metal statue of Eve was cut off at the ankles and stolen over the weekend, as the matching statue of Adam looked on helplessly. The whereabouts of Eve are still unknown.

BBM people in Bloomington did receive the sketch and description of a man driving a black pick up truck and everyone in town was calling in tips , according to a sheriff
and also an FBI agent I talked to. The FBI was fielding calls during Jill's disappearance and they were looking for this guy. In retrospect, I think it was a sort of collective panic, as it is probably very unlikely a perp would strike again so soon during such an uproar over Jill's fate.
Jill and her family had deep roots here and were very well-liked. Before Lauren, it was Jill's disappearance that made me realize that there was an evil, subtle change in our community, that now, anything could happen, that now, it wasn't safe to hike or bike alone, that our parks and forests weren't really safe to go alone. Jill was Bloomington's end of innocence forever and for always.

For me, Bloomington did not seem as safe after Margaret Hayes disappeared and after Ellen Marks was murdered.

I wish people in these forums would stop using acronyms that aren't universally known.

i'm still figuring out some of them, iykwim.

New news rehash
Nearly four years later, the death of another IU student and the interest of a former FBI investigator turned TV crime show host are breathing new life into the cold case.

On April 24, the body of IU student Hannah Wilson was discovered in a rural area about 20 miles from campus, just hours after friends had reported her missing. A cellphone left on the ground near Wilson’s body led Indiana State Police to Daniel Messel, a 49-year-old who’d been in and out of jail a number of times over the past 20 years for violent crimes, many involving female victims. Investigators tracked down Messel at the home he shares in Bloomington with his stepfather, carrying a garbage bag filled with clothes. Clumps of hair and blood were inside his car, according to police, and his forearms were reportedly covered in scratch marks. Messel was arrested and charged with Wilson’s murder; he has pleaded not guilty. Immediately, speculation began of a link to Spierer’s case, fueled by the fact that Wilson was last seen getting into a taxi outside the same Bloomington bar where Spierer had been drinking in the early morning hours before she disappeared. Inundated with questions from both the media and the general public, the Bloomington Police Department promptly released a statement confirming that “Messel’s arrest has provided BPD detectives with an avenue of investigation into Lauren Spierer’s disappearance that will be diligently pursued and, in fact, that investigation has already begun.”

I had just graduated high school in bloomington when Ellen Marks was murdered. As a 17 yr old kid, that shook me up pretty bad that summer as I and most of my friends spent quite a bit of time on campus. And her killer has been free for a few years, living his life.

this may sound harsh, but I just cannot believe someone who killed and dismembered someone is out of jail and living among us!!! totally inexcusable, what is wrong with this picture!!?
Matic and Ros, I am speaking of Ellen Marks, wasn't she killed by her next door neighbor?

Not harsh at all. The recap posted by Ros is alarming. He's out, only one year of parole, and doesn't have to register. It's obvious this guy is a menace to society, and I seriously doubt he's been rehabilitated.

I don't agree with time off for good behavior. Prefer truth in sentencing guidelines.

I don't know how far apart they lived, but it wasn't far. Here's a summary of that case. I do not know where RL lives now. Bloomington did not want him back. http://www.wbiw.com/local/archive/2012/09/man-who-murdered-bloomington-w.php

That article is from a few years ago, and it now appears he was taken back to prison after being released?

Man convicted in Indiana student’s murder loses parole bid
AP Exchange Published: February 3, 2015, 10:05 am

The Indiana Parole Board rejected 59-year-old Robert Evan Lee’s parole request in January [snip]

Lee had served 25 years in prison when he was released in September 2012 [snip]
he was arrested in November 2012 after he got into a car and rode a short distance with a woman he had given directions to. Lee said he was just trying to help, but the act of getting into the car violated the terms of his release and he was returned to prison.

Lee can request parole once a year. If he does not win parole, he could be held in prison until his original release date of Oct. 21, 2029.

From the WBIW article:

The BPD captain in charge of the investigation admitted erasing several cassette tapes recording Lee's interrogation, claiming police questioning techniques would have embarrassed the department

If coercion was used to get incriminating statements e.g. about writing the page detailing murder then that could throw doubt on the conviction so why not just erase the tapes?

evidence substantiating the trail of blood police said they detected with Luminol was excluded from the trial because of questions about how it was applied.

Again this looks weird. Many cases would get a re-trial because of these questionable details. The first sentences of the article make it look like a slam-dunk conviction then they put the stuff throwing question on it near the end.

yes but they found her body parts iburied in his plastic bags, etc, i mean if all of the questionable things were thrown off the table I iirc there'd still be a conviction. no blood trail but iirc there was
instruments in his house, etc.
maybe LE just got over confident and missed protocol.
Remember it well when he was released here, at first, there was no warning to the public,
the Backstreet Mission took him in and the pastor gave this press release/story in the Herald Times about how they were taking him in, yatatayat and everyone's like, WTF??!!
It was being said that he was having a hard time adjusting. Then, gets in a woman's car. When that happened, IMO he was going to kill a woman sooner or later, and he was
testing the water. the guy's a homicidal maniac. He can't just stalk his neighbor, kill her, cut her up in pieces and then one day it's cool, he's ok. Throw away the key on these types.
