The man found killed at the bottom of an old sand mine on the city's far southwest side has been identified as Nathan Marshall, 31, who had been living in a residence not far from the site where he was found dead...

His body was found wrapped in carpet at the bottom of the J-Pit late Wednesday afternoon by a neighborhood boy who was riding his ATV in the long-vacant sand mine. Sgt. Thomas Decanter said the boy thought it was a deer wrapped up and summoned his father to the scene, who realized it was the body of a man.

Police say family members last saw Marshall on Christmas Day and reported him missing to Gary police on Jan. 23 after his aunt went to check on him. He had been living in the 3000 block of Gerry Street in Black Oak, just about a mile from the site where his body was found. The missing person's report states there were signs of a possible struggle inside the house.

An autopsy could not determine exactly what injuries he suffered, but ruled his death a homicide, according to a statement Friday from the Lake County coroner’s office...

Gary police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Decanter said previously that the investigation is ongoing and a couple of “people of interest” have been identified.

Marshall was handicapped and, although speculation abounds, it seems extremely unlikely he could have walked on his own to the remote area where the body was found.

I was informed the case was sealed because one suspect was still at large. All suspects have now been apprehended so the case should be unsealed tomorrow. As of 4:00 pm today, details were not being released.

Stephanie Serrano, 29, and James Willingham, 32, both of the Black Oak neighborhood where Marshall lived and died, are charged with murder and assisting a criminal. Cheyanne Evans, 20, also of Black Oak, is charged with assisting a criminal. She is in custody in Orlando, Fla., awaiting extradition to Indiana, police said.

James E. Willingham pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated battery for his role in the death of Nathan Marshall, whose body was found two years ago in a wooded area in Gary.

Willingham, 32, of Lake Station, admitted in the plea agreement he intentionally inflicted injury to Marshall, which caused the man's death.

Willingham faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison for the level 3 felony offense, as per the terms of the plea agreement.

Willingham is scheduled to be sentenced May 2.

A third co-defendant, Cheyanne D. Evans, was charged with assisting a criminal on allegations she helped Willingham and Serrano dispose of the body.

Evans, 22, pleaded guilty last January to assisting a criminal, a level 5 felony. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 16.

Stephanie M. Serrano pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to assisting a criminal in the killing of a 31-year-old disabled man.

Serrano, 31, of Gary, admitted in the plea she assisted James E. Willingham in the killing of Nathan Marshall, who was found dead Feb. 25, 2015, in a wooded area of Gary.

Serrano, who entered her plea in an agreement with the state, faces up to six years in prison for assisting a criminal. She is scheduled to be sentenced May 10.

James E. Willingham was sentenced Tuesday morning to 12 years in prison for his role in the killing of 31-year-old Nathan Marshall.

Willingham, 32, of Lake Station, will serve the final three-and-a-half years of his sentence in Lake County Community Corrections, per the order of Judge Samuel L. Cappas.

Marshall's 15-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter told Willingham at the sentencing hearing that he was a coward.

The son told the judge he looked up to his father, and it will be hard to grow up without him.

Willingham, a father of three children, tearfully apologized to the children and their mother for his actions.

A criminal court judge heard statements Wednesday morning from the children of a 31-year-old man beaten to death in January 2015.

Judge Samuel L. Cappas said he would take the statements under consideration and order a sentence next week for Stephanie M. Serrano, one of three co-defendants charged in the killing of Nathan Marshall.

Marshall's 15-year-old son told the judge on Wednesday he called his father in the days after the attack, but before his body was found, and Serrano told him his father could not answer the phone. The son said he believed that was because his father was dying in the apartment.

The victim's 13-year-old daughter said Marshall considered Serrano a friend.
