What happened after that?

I can't find where he was ever charged or investigated.

Penton will be in jail for the rest of his life.

I found that he'd been "charged" related to Shannon's disappearance, but nothing after that.
Nothing about charges being dismissed.
Nothing about him being acquitted.
Nothing about it being a wild-goose-chase.
Nothing past being charged. Nothing at all related to Shannon after that.

Penton is on Murderpedia and it describes another girl (Christi Meeks) who also disappeared playing hide-and-seek who turned up murdered. She was in Texas. He pleaded guilty to her murder, along with the murders of two other TX girls.

Meeks' father sounded like he thought Penton pleaded guilty to save himself from Death Row and doesn't necessarily think that he is the one who killed his daughter.

The link to Penton in Shannon's case came from an informant in Ohio (Jeffrey Sunnycalb) and it doesn't sound like Shannon's father's PI believes him 100% either.

A story from Kokomo about Shannon that mentions Penton, Sunnycalb and Donna Walker

Mark Harper, a private investigator the Sherrill’s hired, said Jeffrey Sunnycalb, an informant at the Warren Correctional Institution in Warren, Ohio, told police David Penton was the man they wanted.

Penton, a convicted child serial killer and Sunnycalb’s former cellmate, is serving a life sentence after a jury convicted him of murdering an Ohio girl in 1988.

In his letter, Sunnycalb described Penton’s vehicle, which matches descriptions of one witnesses reported seeing in Shannon Sherrill’s trailer park the day she disappeared, Harper said.

This is why he should have been made to allocute, to remove all doubt. I assume he didn't or her father wouldn't have doubts.

I recently completed reading the Steve Jackson book, "Bogeyman", and decided to map out Penton's abduction and "dump sites" for each of the crimes he's convicted of. It's probably just another observation that would be ignored in a folder somewhere, but Penton always seemed to travel north east after each abduction.

Thirty years missing on this day. It was a warm and sunny, beautiful October afternoon today, as it was that day thirty years ago when Shannon was last seen. The sky is a completely different shade of azure blue. Little kids played outdoors. Farmers harvested their corn and soybeans. Shannon went out to play with her friends, and never returned.

Justice for Shannon.

Bumping for Shannon. Where did you go little girl?
