Homeland Security, K-9 crews join search for missing Columbus man

Homeland Security, K-9 crews join search for missing Columbus man

"His vehicle was located stuck in the mud out at CERA Land Park in rural Bartholomew County," said Harris. "Since then, we've utilized ATV's, drones and a number of boots on the ground in our attempt to locate him."

Teams are searching the park area and beyond but so far, the nearly three dozen searchers and least five K-9's have not found anything to lead them to Duckworth.

I wonder how the pieces of this case fit together: vehicle stuck in the mud, not wearing shoes, silver alert, believed to be in extreme danger, and may require medical assistance?

I don't know, "Silver Alert" always makes me think there are some physical or mental challenges (the person has dementia and wandered off or the person is autistic and wandered off type of things) but it doesn't seem like it in this case. Perhaps they think he was suicidal? JMO

Also, is it common for Homeland Security to be involved? That struck me as a bit unusual but maybe they do help in these cases, not sure.

From the WTHR article:
“Because of their concerns, Homeland Security and various K-9 crews from across Indiana are working to find Duckworth, starting with their biggest clue.”

I can’t tell for sure from the report, but I suspect it’s the state department of homeland security, not the federal agency. It appears that IDHS assists with missing person searches somewhat regularly:
From Sep., 2018:
“FAYETTE COUNTY, Ind. -- While working on an investigation into the disappearance of Denise Pflum in 1986, investigators in Fayette County a cadaver K-9 positively indicated to the possibility of human remains.

Sheriff Joey Laughlin says cadaver dogs from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security indicated to the possible human remains at the Fourth Pond at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary.”
Possible human remains found during search

From July, 2018:
“Diamond Bynum, 21, and King Walker, 2, of the 500 block of Matthews Street, were last seen July 25, 2015 at the Gary residence.

[SBM]

In the week after the pair's disappearance, Gary police led several days of searches with assistance from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's District 1 Task Force.

[SBM]

Indiana State Police on Sept. 2, 2015, issued a Silver Alert for Diamond Bynum at the urging of family, who stressed she has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old and is unable to care for her young nephew.”
Three years ago, Diamond Bynum and nephew King Walker disappeared without a trace

July, 2015:
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), in collaboration with state and local partners, helped locate the body of a missing 19- year old man in a Rush County pond on Sunday, June 21.

[SBM]

IDHS’s [Search and Rescue Emergency Preparedness Specialist Lillian] Hardy – along with Midwest K9 Search and Rescue – responded to Rush County’s request for tracking and cadaver search dogs early Sunday morning.

[SBM]

Hardy’s search dog [Viper] was placed aboard a DNR boat and gave its first indication that it had found a lead at 10:15 a.m. DNR dragged the pond and used side scan sonar, locating the body at approximately 12:45 p.m.”

Death investigation underway after body found in Columbus lake

COLUMBUS, Ind. – A death investigation is underway in Bartholomew County after a body was found floating in a lake Tuesday morning.

Columbus police say the body was discovered in the water at CERAland Park by a park employee around 11:20 a.m.

At this time, police say the deceased person has not been identified, but it is an adult. Authorities are looking into any and all missing persons cases in the area, including 22-year-old Timothy Duckworth.

Police took to Facebook on May 6 to ask the public for help finding Duckworth, who officers say was last seen in the area of CERAland Park. Police say Duckworth’s vehicle was also found abandoned at the park on Friday, May 4.

Anyone who has seen, heard from, or had any contact with Duckworth or has any information regarding his whereabouts since the evening hours of Thursday, May 3 is urged to contact Columbus police at 812-376-2600.

So sad for this talented young man.As @azure stated above, the pieces of his missing case - the silver alert, the abandoned car in the mud, and possibly needing medical attention were all leading in a very sad direction. RIP Timothy. I hope you found the peace you were looking for.
