Sanjay Roy, 33, a "civic volunteer" and police officer, sometimes assigned to the RG Kar Hospital's police outpost, was arrested on Saturday 10 August, for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female resident doctor. The doctor had gone to sleep in a seminar room at the hospital, after having had dinner with colleagues. SR who had access to all departments because his job, was seen entering the building at 4 a.m., and leaving 40 minutes later.

This case have caused demonstrations, and junior doctors, house staff, and others working at the hospital, as well as other hospitals in the region, have stayed away from work, demanding enhanced security, and severe punishment for the accused.

The Reclaim the Night march in Kolkata drew tens of thousands of women in protest after the rape and murder of a young doctor at the hospital where she worked.

While the womens protest was peaceful, there were about 40 individuals who broke in into the hospital premises, destroying property, and attacking doctors, in perhaps an attempt to destroy evidence.

Appalling story, in so many ways. This article suggests the accused is a tout who claims to provide quicker access to treatment for cash:

"The police investigation revealed that the 33-year-old man arrested for the crime was able to access every part of the hospital even though he appeared to be an unofficial tout helping patients to get admission faster in return for money."

It's so heartbreaking! Looks like a worldwide epidemic of violence against women.

"The postmortem report also revealed that around 150 mg of semen was found in the vaginal swab.

This finding along with the extent of injuries led the doctors and the victim's parents to believe that this may be a case of gang rape."

RIP to the victim :(

'Savage rape and murder of trainee doctor sparks mass protest in India with thousands of women taking to the streets demanding urgent measures to tackle sexual violence.

Officials, including principal of the medical college Dr Sandip Ghosh, tried to dismiss the death of the young woman, who has not yet been named,
as a suicide."
