  • Matt Harper, 48, was stabbed to death inside his home in Bali in Indonesia
  • He was allegedly attacked by his partner Emmy Pakpahan, said to be in her 40s
  • Pakpahan told police that he had locked himself in his home and killed himself
A British father-of-two has allegedly been stabbed to death by his Indonesian girlfriend while on a video call to his family back in the UK.

Matt Harper, 48, was allegedly attacked by his partner Emmy Pakpahan, believed to be in her 40s, inside his home in Bali, Indonesia.

It is understood he had been speaking to his step-daughter and ex-wife on a video call when the attack occurred.

Mr Harper, from Gloucester, worked for luxury hotel firm Karma and had been seeing Pakpahan since last July, according to friends.

The Indonesian woman - who has US citizenship from a previous marriage - told investigators that Mr Harper had taken his own life.

She showed police video footage she had recorded of him dying on the floor moments after her suspected attack, telling them he had locked the doors and intentionally harmed himself, reports the Sun.

British father, 48, 'stabbed to death by his Indonesian girlfriend in Bali while on video call home' | Daily Mail Online

INDONESIAN cops have said they are inclined to believe tragic Brit dad Matt Harper killed himself in Bali - just as his murder-suspect girlfriend claimed.

The 48-year-old died from multiple stab wounds in his home on the paradise island on Thursday.

Pals said Matt, originally from Gloucester but who worked in Bali since February 2020, was on video call with loved ones back in the UK when he was allegedly murdered.

His Indonesian-born girlfriend Emmy Pakpahan was quizzed by cops over the incident and remains under investigation.

Pakpahan, who is in her 40s and is Indonesian-born but has US citizenship from a previous marriage, told police that Matt killed himself.

Bali's director of criminal investigation, police chief Mr Surawan, told The Sun today: "I can't say this is murder yet. So far we suspect that Mr Harper died by suicide."

This has left me scratching my head! Sounds like a very bizarre way to take your own life.
Surely if he was on a video call with family there is at least one witness to what happened or what was being said?

Why would they suspect that she is telling the truth when they have family stating otherwise? This is a bizarre case! Stabbing oneself multiple times would be a tough way to die! How could she film that if she actually cared for him???

It sounds to me like the poor man is being stitched up by the Indonesian police.

Why-oh-why can they not do a proper investigation in these places?

I'm sure they want to back the
Indonesian woman, as opposed to a foreigner, but the evidence doesn't align with her excuses/reason for his death.

Not only that. A little palm greasing too.

A British man who died in Bali while on a video call to his ex-wife at home in the UK may have committed suicide, police have said.

Hotel boss Matt Harper was chatting online to his step-daughter and his ex wife, when he was stabbed.

Police initially detained his Indonesian girlfriend Emmy Pakpahan despite her telling police her boyfriend killed himself.

It is said she showed police a video of the 48-year-old from Gloucester, dying on the floor of the home on the Indonesian holiday island. She filmed the footage, claiming the man had locked the doors and intentionally harmed himself.

[...]

Hours before, she uploaded a bizarre video on social media saying she needed time to come to terms with what had happened. She filmed herself thanking friends and family and said to the camera: “Naturally I am sad. And if you guys don’t hear from me, it’s not because I don’t want to answer, I need time to process things.

"Please don’t believe anything until a statement comes out from the police department.”

But now Bali's director of criminal investigation, police chief Mr Surawan, told The Sun: "I can't say this is murder yet. So far we suspect that Mr Harper died by suicide." He added he has reviewed CCTV footage from Matt's villa showed him and Emmy on the property on Thursday morning.

Mr Surawan said: “It is reported the victim escorted his girlfriend out of the villa. Mr Harper then entered the villa and went to the bedroom and locked the bedroom door.

"His girlfriend then came back and peeked into the room and saw that the victim was in a critical condition. She then took the victim to the hospital, but he was not saved. Mr Harper has wounds to his neck and stomach from a sharp weapon. We are still investigating and interviewing a number of witnesses, including Miss Pakpahan.

[...]

The man's ex-girlfriend Allin Efashion described him as a "perfect gentleman - a caring and lovely man".

She said: “He texted me just a few days before he died, saying he hated Emmy because she ruined his life — and he was sorry for leaving me..."

Things that stand out from above:

Hotel boss Matt Harper was chatting online to his step-daughter and his ex wife, when he was stabbed.

...ex-girlfriend Allin Efashion... said: “He texted me just a few days before he died, saying he hated Emmy because she ruined his life and he was sorry for leaving me..."

Sounds like he felt he had made a big mistake with new gf, missed the ex, new gf jealous of him in contact with her.

"Other friends revealed they feared for Matt’s safety in the weeks leading up to his death.

They described Pakpahan as a “psycho” girlfriend who has been accused on Bali Facebook groups of being a serial scammer who has conned foreigners out of tens of thousands of pounds."

I know it's the Sun, but sorry but I lean to believing this above more than that this poor man stabbed himself to death.

Absolutely IMO. How infuriating for his family.

From above:

Mr Surawan said: “It is reported the victim escorted his girlfriend out of the villa. Mr Harper then entered the villa and went to the bedroom and locked the bedroom door..."

This I believe is true. Maybe they were arguing when he said he was going to call home, and he locked her out of the room.

But, I don't feel right now, that this was because he wanted to knife himself to death; and if he had been suicidal there are far easier ways to do it.

This does feel more like a jealous frenzied attack from another person - however, if that were the case, he would have tried to defend himself, so it will be interesting to hear were there any other marks on him, on the girlfriend, and where the blood was pooled and splattered.

Could a third person even be involved who carried out the attack?

A BRIT dad found stabbed to death in Bali was "hallucinating" and seemed "scared" before he died, his girlfriend has claimed.

Matt Harper, 48, from Gloucester, was died from knife wounds at his home on the Indonesian island as police launched a probe.

[...]

Pakpahan claims he had a mental episode and deliberately harmed himself - claiming he was in a “scared” state after waking at 3.30am on Thursday.

She told cops that she fled their shared villa after he suddenly woke in the night so she could make a phone call.

When she returned minutes later, the doors were locked and Matt was writhing around on the floor dying, she claims.

She then filmed tragic Matt’s final moments through a window, sobbing on film: “Oh my god, oh my god. I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to do.”

“I was getting scared the way he was acting because he was very afraid and hallucinating.

“I went outside the house and made a phone call to Matt’s stepdaughter in England, and while still on the phone to her I tried getting back in the house but found it locked from the inside.

“I called a neighbour who managed to get in and found Matt lying with a knife on the floor, still breathing.”

Pakpahan’s version of events contradicts local reports from friends who said Matt, who worked for luxury hotel group Karma, was on a video call to family back home in the UK when he was attacked.

An autopsy is due to take place tomorrow.

Brit knifed to death in Bali was 'hallucinating' before he died, claims lover

1. Why was he 'hallucinating'?

2. Did he have mental health issues?

3. If so, was he on prescribed medication?

4. Had he had trouble in the past with 'hallucinations'?

5. Was he known to take illegal hallucinogenic drugs?

6. Who was she calling at 3.30am when she left to 'make a call'? Was this the neighbour?

7. Two conflicting stories about what he was doing at time. Two conflicting theories as to nature of his death.

I await the tox report with interest.
