SEARCH parties were combing an area of the midlands countryside after the family of missing woman Aoife Phelan expressed a "hunch" that she might be found there.

An estimated 300 people gathered at Aoife's hometown of Ballyroan yesterday morning for a search that continued until the light began to fade.

Organiser Denis Tierney explained that they were concentrating their search on the Ridge Road area between Portlaoise and Mountmellick.

This was due to a "hunch" of the family who wanted a particular area examined more carefully, he explained.

However, as the search efforts continued, there was nothing found.

The 31-year-old childminder was last seen on October 25 when she left a friend's house at Colliers View in Portlaoise at around 8.10pm.

Gardaí Supt Yvonne Lundon (with photo of Aoife) did not comment on any of the information that may have been gleaned by the Garda investigation to date, but confirmed concerns had significantly increased.

“Obviously her parents and friends are extremely concerned about her welfare and we at An Garda Síochána are also concerned about her welfare and endorse those opinions,” she said.

Aoife's parents, Betty and Michael Phelan say her disappearance is out of character and they can't eat or sleep because of their worry.
Aoife, the fifth of 12 children, lives in Portlaoise where she works part-time as a childminder. She comes home to stay with her parents Michael, 58, and Betty, 57, in Ballyroan every weekend.
Two of Aoife's sisters, Leanne and Lavinia, boarded a flight yesterday from Australia when they heard she was missing and are due to return home today.
Aoife left her friend's house and took a right turn out of Colliers View and walked towards Colliers Lane. Yesterday, at the spot close to where Aoife was last seen, her brother Michael, who has been putting up leaflets around the area, said he was 'deeply worried'.
'Too much time is passing and we just don't know where she is. Colliers Lane is always busy with drivers, walkers and joggers. People are always out with their dogs here so somebody must have seen something.

Mother makes emotional plea for return of missing daughter
The Irish Times - Friday, November 2, 2012

The heartbroken mother of missing Laois woman Aoife Phelan made an emotional plea for her daughter’s return at a candlelit vigil last night.

Up to 200 friends, family members and neighbours gathered at Colliers View, Portlaoise, where Ms Phelan was last seen almost exactly a week before.

“Aoife, we will be strong as a family and we will bring you home. We love you Aoife, so come home,” Betty Phelan said. She clutched rosary beads and led prayers during the vigil.

Ms Phelan’s brother Darragh said: “On behalf of my mother and father and brothers and sisters, we are just hoping tonight that something will jog someone’s memory somewhere.

“No matter how small, how trivial, just please, please contact the guards in Portlaoise.”

Ms Phelan’s family, who were carrying roses and pictures of her, thanked the community and gardaí for their support. They linked arms in a circle after the prayers were said for her safe return

GARDAI intend to interview a young man who had a brief relationship with missing childminder Aoife Phelan (30). The Herald understands that the highly respected local man -- who is understood to be abroad -- is the father of a child that Aoife is four months pregnant with.

The man, who is well known in local GAA circles, has not returned to Ireland from overseas where he was on a brief holiday.

It is understood he has been in communication with gardai and is expected home to Ballyroan, Co Laois, in the coming days.

The man is not suspected of any wrongdoing and officers still do not know if Aoife was the victim of foul play.

THE ex-boyfriend of missing pregnant woman Aoife Phelan left Ireland for the US a few days before her disappearance.

Gardaí have now sought to speak to this man, who works as a lorry driver and is involved with the GAA.

Miss Phelan, 30, was last seen on Thursday night at Colliers Lane near her home in Portlaoise, Co. Laois.

She had told her family that she was four months pregnant. Her ex-boyfriend went to the US, for an extended holiday, a few days before she went missing. It is understood that they were not in a serious relationship.

News video on this link - Gardai have moved significantly in past 48 hours thanks to information from-
1 Last signal from Aoife's mobile phone.
2. CCTV footage.
3. Forensic investigation of seized 4x4 jeep type vehicle which Aoife had been a passenger in.

Above information led to arrest at local Portalaoise house of man now being questioned.

Gardai now searching building in Timahoe road, especially the attic area.

Oh, no. I really thought she would be found safely, so I'm upset to find this has turned into a murder investigation. May justice be served swiftly.

Will any further charges be brought considering she was pregnant?
I know different countries (and different states/counties within those countries) have different laws regarding this.

My thoughts are with Aoife's family and friends. :rose:

A MAN well known to missing pregnant nanny Aoife Phelan has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

The 24-year-old was arrested after gardai focused their search on a house in Portlaoise as they upgraded their missing persons search to a murder investigation.

Gardai have now conceded that they are searching for the body of the 30-year-old Portlaoise woman who has been missing for 11 days.

Following the arrest of the local man, the search switched to a premises outside the town on the Timahoe road and forensic officers combed the area for potential evidence.

Over the weekend, gardai seized a 4x4 vehicle. The SUV is believed to be owned by the suspect.

Officers also seized the suspect's mobile phone and are checking his records to see if he was in contact with Aoife Phelan around the time of her disappearance.

Senior officers decided on the arrest after a review of the latest developments in their inquiries over the weekend.

Local gardai are being backed up in the murder investigation by members of the national bureau of criminal investigation from Dublin and forensic officers from the technical bureau at Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park.

Gardai dig up garden in hunt for murdered Aoife
A GARDA forensic team has begun searching land at the back of a house in Co Laois today in their search for murdered childcare worker Aoife Phelan (30).

A mini-digger was brought onto the land and detectives are also using shovels and other equipment on site to assist them in a search.

The search is taking place at a sealed-off property at Timahoe Road, Portlaoise, which was raided by gardai yesterday evening.

The chief suspect in the murder investigation, who was known to Aoife, is still being questioned at Portlaoise Garda Station after his arrest yesterday.

Throughout last week, gardai had maintained that it was "highly unlikely" that Ms Phelan had been the victim of foul play and that they "had no indication whatsoever" that she had been harmed by anyone else.

Hi all,

I'm a long-time reader of the forums, but never post!

Terrible that the investigation has taken this turn. Pieces in the media last week hinted that foul play was not suspected, as posted above - so I really thought they had evidence AP had left of her own free will.

Thoughts and prayers with the family.

I am about an hour from Portlaoise.

MOO.
