BBC reporter from Gaza, live now:

“The [IDF] has been contacted for comment and they are investigating, but it’s hard to see what else this could be really given the size of the explosion other than an Israeli airstrike or several airstrikes, because when we’ve seen rockets being fired out of Gaza we never see explosions of that scale. We might see half a dozen, maybe a few more people being killed in such rocket attacks but we’ve never seen one on the scale of this sort of explosion on the video I was watching earlier, which as you say is still to be verified.”

Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas has canceled a planned meeting with Joe Biden following the strike on a Gaza hospital reported to have killed hundreds, a senior Palestinian official said.

The meeting was due to take place in Jordan during the US president’s visit to the Middle East beginning on Wednesday.

The Palestinian official said Abbas was returning to Ramallah, the seat of his government in the occupied West Bank, Reuters reports.

I don’t believe that the IDF would ever intentionally blow up a hospital. This is either a terrible thing gone wrong, but it has Hamas signature all over it.
With all the scrutiny Israel is under, I can't see them targeting a hospital. Especially as they've paused/slowed air strikes and are in diplomatic conversations with visiting allies. It doesn't make sense.

Especially when Hamas was firing at the same time?

BBC News Live

80% of the hospital has been destroyed.

“International law says you don’t target hospitals, so for this to happen just as Mr Biden is arriving makes his trip hugely, hugely harder.”

At least 500 people have been killed, maybe hundreds of victims in the rubbles.

( Apologies, not sure how to insert a link, but a new article from PBS: )

Absolutely disgusted this is being reporting factually as an IDF strike on the hospital, but anything with Hamas is "alleged" ...

Israel's military says 'a hospital is not an IDF target'

The BBC's international editor Jeremy Bowen says he has received a statement in a phone call from the spokesperson’s office of the Israel Defence Forces, reacting to what Palestinian officials have said was an Israeli strike on the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza.
The statement says "a hospital is a highly sensitive building and is not an IDF target."
"The IDF is investigating the source of the explosion and as always is prioritising accuracy and reliability."
"We urge everyone to proceed with caution when reporting unverified claims of a terrorist organisation."

Gaza hospital strike was a "cold-blooded massacre," Palestinian foreign ministry says

From Kareem Khadder

The strike on the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City was a "cold-blooded massacre," according to a statement released late Tuesday by the Palestinian foreign ministry.
The hospital attack will “forever remain a stain on the conscience of humanity that has been witnessing the horrors committed against the Palestinian people without taking action to stop it,” the statement read.
Palestinian officials have said preliminary estimates indicate between 200 to 300 people were killed in the Israeli strike on the hospital in the center of Gaza City.
The statement continued:
"Every rule of international law is being shredded as thousands are mercilessly massacred and millions of people are being stripped of their humanity, subjected to wanton killing, starvation and forced transfer, with no end in sight as Israeli occupying forces ... continue to pound the Gaza Strip, with thousands of missiles and bombs targeting civilian areas by air, land and sea and threats to commit mass murders."
Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari said the IDF is looking into the reported strike, saying since it was fairly recent, the IDF is still unclear whether the hospital was hit by an Israeli Air Force (IAF) strike or failed Hamas launch.

The WHO knows that someone attacked the hospital? Isn't it possible that it was a failed Hamas rocket launch?

Why are people in positions of responsibility and authority reacting emotionally?
It's the WHO. (Health..)
I would consider a failed Hamas rocket launch to also be an attack.

It's a hospital. Any large explosion at a hospital would probably elicit a response from the WHO.

IDF chief: Hezbollah will be "destroyed" if it "makes a mistake"

From Tamar Michaelis in Jerusalem

Israel Defense Forces Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi warned Hezbollah against any attacks on Israel as he toured the military’s Northern Command near Lebanon on Tuesday.
“If Hezbollah makes a mistake and strikes us, it will be destroyed, destroyed, destroyed,” Halevi said.
“Each one of us will do anything, including risking our own lives. Why is that?" he asked soldiers. "We’re fighting over our home, our civilians, our sovereignty, our deterrence and our existence in the future.”
The crossfire on Lebanon’s border with Israel is dwarfed by the scale and intensity of the Hamas-Israel war to the south.
The border fighting is within a roughly four-kilometer (2.5-mile) radius of either side of the demarcation line, with at least 13 people killed since last Saturday.

Abbas cancels meeting with Biden

Barbara Plett Usher
US State Department correspondent, BBC News

This is a disaster in every way and could be for President Biden’s trip to Israel.
First of all, an explosion at a clearly civilian location like a hospital.
And then, one filled not only with the sick and wounded, but people taking shelter in what they thought was a "safe zone".
The Palestinians are saying it was an Israeli air strike. The Israelis are saying they're investigating the source of the explosion.
The Americans will probably be cautious about what they say, or at least about assigning blame, until there are more details.
But it's going to shift the focus of Biden’s trip much more onto the dangers for Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and strain his discussions with Arab leaders in Amman.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has cancelled his meeting with Biden, which was due to take place in Jordan.

BUMP.

The WHO says nothing about whose rocket hit the hospital. They continue to complain that it has been impossible to evacuate the hospital, thereby leaving it in a war zone. IMO, it's ridiculous to think you can leave a hospital in a war zone, and both sides will just be careful to bomb around it.

"WHO statement on attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital and reported large-scale casualties

WHO strongly condemns the attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in the north of the Gaza Strip. The hospital was operational, with patients, health and care givers, and internally displaced people sheltering there. Early reports indicate hundreds of fatalities and injuries.

The hospital was one of 20 in the north of the Gaza Strip facing evacuation orders from the Israeli military. The order for evacuation has been impossible to carry out given the current insecurity, critical condition of many patients, and lack of ambulances, staff, health system bed capacity, and alternative shelter for those displaced.

WHO calls for the immediate active protection of civilians and health care. Evacuation orders must be reversed. International humanitarian law must be abided by, which means health care must be actively protected and never targeted."

Breaking: IDF Spokesperson From the analysis of the operational systems of the IDF, an enemy rocket barrage was carried out towards Israel, which passed through the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit. According to intelligence information, from several sources we have, the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization is responsible for the failed shooting that hit the hospital.
