The leader of a Kenyan cult who allegedly encouraged over 400 followers to starve themselves to death has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, in one of the worst ever cases of cult-related mass deaths.

Self-proclaimed pastor Paul Mackenzie appeared in court in the coastal city of Mombasa alongside 94 other suspects on Monday.

"There has never been a manslaughter case like this in Kenya," prosecutor Alexander Jami Yamina told AFP.

The prosecution say over 400 witnesses will testify over the next four days.

Mr Yamina said the case was unique in Kenya, and the suspects would be prosecuted under a law relating to suicide pacts.

Graphic warning :

Shukran Karisa Mangi always showed up drunk at work, where he dug up the bodies of doomsday cult members buried in shallow graves.
But the alcohol couldn’t numb his shock the morning he found the body of a close friend, whose neck had been twisted so severely that his head and torso faced opposite directions.
In one of the deadliest cult-related massacres ever, at least 436 bodies have been recovered since police raided Good News International Church in a forest some 70 kilometers (40 miles) inland from the coastal town of Malindi.
Seventeen months later, many in the area are still shaken by what happened despite repeated warnings about the church’s leader.

Parents were forbidden from feeding their children, witnesses said.

Re. the bolded: How does anyone control people to the point that they willingly allow their kids to suffer (Rhetorical question; we know from other cases that parents have done nothing while an abusive partner whom they don't want to lose -- mistreats their kids, awful yet it happens.) ??
Almost like the People's Temple murders.

I hadn't heard about this case until reading the article at the link.
Sounds like there were some clear warnings from escapees and extended members of the murderers' (Paul Mackenzie) family ?

Feeling the most sadness for the children who were completely helpless.
Nearly equals the Guyana tragedy.
Imo-- beware whenever a pastor or religious figure moves the congregation into isolation.
The family of the teen who's beaten face shown in the media, was also moved away along with the followers, into a compound.

PM's followers were on an estimated 800 acres, a vast area and how are they ever going to find the missing and presumed dead ?
Possibly HRD dogs ?
These case are so chilling.
Omo.
