Prosecutor could seek death penalty in deputies' deaths (with clip)

"KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man with a long criminal history has been charged in the shooting deaths of two Wyandotte County deputies.

Antoine Fielder is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of aggravated robbery.

Wyandotte District Attorney Mark Dupree said in a 13-minute news conference Friday that his office plans to move forward in the case, which could include seeking the death penalty....

On Friday, June 15, Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, and Deputy Theresa King, 44, were transporting inmates, including Fielder, from the Wyandotte County Courthouse.

Fielder allegedly overpowered the deputies and shot and killed them, possibly with the deputies’ guns....

Fielder is also facing other previous charges. He was at the Wyandotte County Courthouse on June 15 for a hearing on robbery charges. He was charged in a 2017 murder in Kansas City, Missouri in which he is accused of killing a woman a day after Christmas. He’s also facing aggravated assault and battery charges.

Fielder also remains a suspect in Kelsey Ewonus' 2015 murder. He already went on trial twice for her murder but both ended in hung juries.

Prosecutors blame the mistrials on witness tampering and claim he intimidated people. ..."

"KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After two Wyandotte County juries could not reach a decision in a 2015 Kansas City, Kansas murder case, Jackson County prosecutors charged Antoine Fielder with murder.

The murder is in connection to a Dec. 26, 2017 shooting in Kansas City, Missouri in the 600 block of Spruce Avenue.

Man got off on murder charge. Then he killed a woman in KC crime spree, police say (with clip)

April 04, 2018

"Two juries couldn't convict a man facing murder, so he walked free. About three months later, he went on a crime spree that included murder, according to prosecutors in Jackson and Wyandotte counties.

Antoine R. Fielder, 30, was charged Tuesday in Jackson County with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Rosemarie Harmon last December. Fielder also faces first-degree assault charges and two counts of armed criminal action. He also allegedly shot and injured Harmon's friend....

Fielder was released from custody on Sept. 29, the same day Dupree's office dismissed a murder charge. Fielder had stood trial twice for the 2015 killing of Kelsey Ewonus, a 22-year-old woman from Overland Park.

Ewonus was found inside a car parked in an out-of-the-way area just west of State Line Road and a few blocks north of the University of Kansas Hospital.

The juries in both trials were hung, resulting in mistrials. The last mistrial was in July.

"We did everything we could to prove to a jury that he was guilty" of killing Ewonus, Dupree said at the press conference. He added, "If you catch him again, you try again."..."

Wife of suspect in WyCo deputies shooting granted right to visit him in jail (with clip)

Nov 28, 2018

"KANSAS CITY, Kan. — On Tuesday, a judge granted Antoine Fielder's wife permission to visit him in jail despite prosecutors allegations that he has instructed her to intimidate witnesses in the past.

Fielder is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputies Patrick Rohrer and Theresa King in June 2018.

In court Wednesday, Fielder's defense attorney asked the judge to enforce a subpoena for records from the Johnson County Sheriffs Department and to allow Fielder's wife to visit Fielder in jail. Fielder is being held in the Johnson County jail for safety reasons....

Wyandotte County Prosecutors claimed in court, that in a separate case, Fielder and his wife plotted during a jail-visit, to intimidate a witness who was scheduled to testify against Fielder.

According to prosecutors, Fielders wife took pictures of the witness's house and dog and sent them to the witness, threatening the witness about what could happen if they testified. ..."

Despite doubts, judge allows private prosecutors in case of two slain deputies (with clip)

JANUARY 09, 2019

"Over the objections of defense lawyers, and despite his own misgivings, a Wyandotte County judge said Wednesday he must allow private attorneys to assist in the prosecution of a man charged with killing two sheriff’s deputies....

Under Kansas law, crime victims can pay for lawyers to assist prosecutors as “associate attorneys,” and the families of Rohrer and King have hired married law partners Tom Bath and Tricia Bath.

Because Fielder faces a possible death sentence, he is being represented by attorneys from the Kansas Death Penalty Defense Unit, who objected to what they termed “interference” in the case.

They argued that the Kansas law that allows the hiring of private attorneys to assist in criminal prosecutions has never been used in a death penalty case....

The judge did order that the Baths will not have any role in the case until after the Feb. 1 preliminary hearing."
