Mother, small child found dead in Newton home

A 24-year-old mother and her 4-year-old daughter are identified as two victims of a double murder in Newton.

Newton police say the search for an identified suspect continues. Newton Police Chief Eric Murphy says the small child died from multiple stab wounds.

Police say they do not know when the mother and small child died. They were found in bedrooms of a home on Roanoke Court, Murphy says.

Murphy says the suspect is known to his department and has been arrested before.

The chief says the Harvey County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the investigation.

Murphy says this was a targeted incident and "not a random act."

Police search for suspect in deaths of woman, 4-year-old daughter in Newton

Officers were called just after 11 a.m. to the report of two people found dead at 15 Roanoke Ct. Chief Eric Murphy said officers arrived to find the bodies of a 24-year-old woman and a 4-year-old girl identified as the woman's daughter.

"The 4-year-old had stab wounds and we are unsure at this point on the method on the adult female," Chief Murphy said, adding that the person who called 911 was an acquaintance.

Update -- 4:51 p.m.: Newton police have identified a mother and daughter found murdered in a Newton home Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Eric Murphy says 24-year-old Alyssa Runyon and four-year-old Zaylynn Paz are the victims.

He says investigators believe Runyon's cause of death was strangulation. Zaylynn was stabbed to death.

Murphy says Runyon's ex-boyfriend went the home on Roanoke Court to check on her Tuesday morning after he said she was not answering her phone. He called 911 after discovering the bodies.

Murphy says a suspect has been identified in the case, but he is not releasing his name. He says the suspect and Runyon were in some type of relationship, but he is not the father of the deceased child.

It's kind of weird. I just got an update from my local TV station that they stopped him using spike strips in a little town (Hutto) that I guess you can consider a suburb of Austin. I think Taylor police were chasing him. I had just read about the murder here so it felt kind of strange for him to be captured so close to me when it happened so far away.

Unsettling to know criminals can be lurking so close. The perp was driving her car (from article linked above) and they were apparently able to track him. I wonder if she had onstar or similar or maybe they tracked his phone, although it seems most people would know to dispose of a phone quickly.
Good work by LE, I hope you're feeling safer.

I think my post may have been a little misunderstood. I was "weirded out" because the murder was 560 miles away in Kansas and all of a sudden the murderer is less than 15 miles away from me.

I think I read somewhere that he had family in this area. He may have also gotten a head start as I don't know how long ago they were killed. It also looks like LE may have known exactly who they were looking for the entire time.

Lol, okay. LE was able to keep this hushed long enough to catch him and that's awesome! He did make it a far distance!

Not too long ago we had the prisoners escape and kill two guards here in South Carolina. They were armed and dangerous traveling freely through our state and the south east. It was a miracle they didn't kill anyone else and were outsmarted by brave citizens who held them at gunpoint until LE arrived. I believe they were captured in TN.
Anyway, just glad this was a quick apprehension.
I would like to add my sincerest condolences to the family of the victims. Love, prayers, and blessings out to them. Nothing hurts like losing our youngest tragically and unexpectedly.

I understand your feelings! I'm in Pflugerville so it's a big story here.

A criminal complaint dated June 22, 2017, alleges that failed to register as a sex offender within three days of coming to Harvey County four months ago. A background check shows Hawkins was wanted for failure to appear in court.

Hawkins has a prior juvenile conviction of aggravated indecent liberties with a child in McPherson County. Records of that crime are sealed.

How much anger can someone have in their soul to stab a defenceless baby? I despise the world I'm bringing my children up in sometimes.
