KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A girl who was reported missing from the Kansas foster care system in 2012 has died after a shooting.

Kansas media outlets report 16-year-old Jamie J. Hernandez-Zubia was shot early Saturday morning in Kansas City, Kansas. Police say they responded to calls about shots being fired and found the victim dead in the street.

According to police, the occupants of two vehicles fired shots at each other and Hernandez-Zubia had been a passenger in one of those vehicles.

one date that lept from the page as I was reading it was that she was missing from foster care placement June 9 2012 - 3 years minus one week.

Sad....and I bet the backstory is even sadder.

RIP

Jamie was last seen on June 9, 2012. She may travel to Kansas City, Kansas. When Jamie was last seen, she had blonde highlights in her hair. She has multiple tattoos. Jamie may be in need of medical attention.

Well, they were right about that part anyway.

Anyone know how far Wathena is from Kansas City? The op is vague, but it appears they suspected she was possibly in Kansas City at the time she went missing. Any other info on this missing/now deceased girl? She was quite young when she went missing and it seems she was located in the city she "may travel to". Weird for me.

According to Google Maps. Wathena is about 60 miles north from where she was found shot.

My guess would be that Foster Care sent her to live in a small town, and that didn't work for her. She probably ran away to be with friends in Kansas City. From the looks of the Google Street View, it looks like lots of gang graffiti in that neighborhood. So the outcome is probably not that surprising.

that probably means she has had a baby. some states emancipate minors when they have a baby. idk why, seems to me a teen parent needs more support than ever.

UPDATE: Police locate pickup in connection with Kansas teen's death

"The truck was found unoccupied late Tuesday night. Police did not say where."

Now, what I do not get is this statement, "Authorities said she was "technically an emancipated minor."

From October:

http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article38704380.html

Someone left a fatally wounded Jamie J. Hernandez-Zubia on a street in Kansas City, Kan. Police found her about 2:30 a.m. May 30 in the 2500 block of Ridge Avenue. Witnesses told of a shootout between two vehicles that drove away...

The missing persons case still was active when she died, even though she had been prosecuted on a drug possession charge in Wyandotte County in 2012.

No arrests have been made in her killing.
