Jury convicts Logan man in sister-in-law's death

Near the end of the trial of a man accused of killing his sister-in-law and dumping her body in the Red River, acting Logan County Commonwealth’s Attorney Justin Crocker urged jurors to remember the suspect’s recorded confession.

“It’s the only explanation in this unbelievably sad situation that makes any sense,” Crocker said Monday during his closing argument.

George Walker’s confession, given to Logan County Sheriff’s Department officials on the night of Dec. 22, 2015, provided the crucial evidence for a jury to convict Walker, 22, of murder and tampering with physical evidence in the death of 23-year-old Allison Walker.

Public defender Nathan Beard, representing George Walker, argued that his client had attempted to cover up for Chris Walker, who Beard posited was actually responsible for Allison's death.

Police did not charge Chris Walker with a crime, and multiple deputies testified that he cooperated with law enforcement throughout the investigation.

"You're trying to turn this around on me ... this is the woman I wanted to have a family with, this is the woman who turned my life around," Chris Walker said during in response to a question from Beard.

“This is something that happens to other people ... you never really think of it as happening to you and when it happens to you it is very life-changing,” said Otha Dean Woods, Allison Walker’s grandmother. “I could have handled it better if she had just died of natural causes or an illness, but she didn’t have a chance to finish out her life, make any mistakes and learn from them and grow.”

Regina Hines, Allison Walker’s mother, described her daughter as a “very loving and sweet young lady” who enjoyed styling hair. Her sister, Kristen Hines, spoke about how she visits Allison Walker’s grave to talk with her.

“She was always the type of person to help other people,” Kristen Hines said. “I can’t talk to her on the phone anymore.”

“This was a difficult trial for the families involved,” Gill said in court. “It’s a deep mystery, not so much as to what happened, but why ... I think the jury would have liked to know why.”

Gill noted that George Walker’s downcast demeanor at sentencing mirrored what he observed at trial and that he appeared to have little trust for anybody.

“I wish I knew more about why this happened,” Gill said. “We’ve got to let society know that there’s a big penalty for stealing someone else’s life. ... I hope you find yourself and learn to trust somebody.”
