I did find on another site that her granddaughter was looking back for her in 2007.

This is what she posted.

I'm not sure if anyone here has any superb investigatory skills but this is an old one.  My Grandmother disappeared shortly after my mother graduated high school.  I can get the dates but this is what I do know.  She divorced my grandfather and married a gentleman with the last name of Melcher.  She was in and out of my mothers life all through highschool but always showed up for important dates.  After my mother graduated, she left and was never seen again.  My uncle, a police officer was able to track her to Florida but was never able to find her.  As you can imagine, this has left a huge hole in my mother's heart.  My mother is in her sixties and although we are well aware that my grandmother is most likely dead, we would like to know where she's buried so we can move her to where she belongs.  I have a few pictures of her I can post.  Due to her being born in 1922, I do not know if she ever had a social security number.  We do believe she had a license but are not sure from which state and with which name.  Her maiden name is Carolyn Almedia Flood, her married name was Floyd and later Melcher.  Please let me know if you have any ideas on how I can pursue this.

I looked at this case. I am pretty sure like 95% sure she is Almedia Carolyn Flood as well. Flood married Vernon Melcher. They were both associated with Louisville, Kentucky. However, Almedia Carolyn Flood was born in 1922 whereas the NamUs profile is for a 43-year-old who disappeared in early 1964 so you'd expect a birthdate of 1920 or 1921. I'm thinking they are the same person but the details in this case are sketchy. You can search Ancestry for Almedia Carolyn Flood. There are pictures there and they look alike. I messaged someone on that site to authenticate them Also, Vernon Melcher and Almedia appeared to get a divorce in 1969. I am wondering if this was in absentia. If it was, then she clearly would have been a missing person at that time. If not, then her whereabouts would have been accounted for to finalize the divorce? This is a case where someone in the know really needs to iron out the facts. I don't trust what is written at NamUs that much for this case.

I just did a search on Vernon Melcher. The search results showed a Vernon K Melcher in the city directory for 1960. I clicked on it and the scanned image actually shows Vernon E Melcher at the same address where he and Almedia were listed in 1956. But in the 1960 one he is listed alone, no Almedia to be found.

I also found this; what seems to be the record of Vernon E. Melcher jr. If this is correct Almedia would have given birth to him when she was 14. When did she marry Vernon E. Melcher sr. ? Something seems to be off.

Couldn’t find that in Ancestry, but that Vernon is there with a wife

Also from Bowling Green KY 1971, Divorce

So again another one?

It looks like the right Vernon Melcher is hard to find in the genealogy files, so is the connections between Almedia and Vernon E. Melcher. There seems to be a lot of mistakes/wrong info. It's very confusing. Someone upthread posted this, NamUs #MP87281 - Newspapers.com this seems to be correct. I couldn't find a marriage nor a divorce in the genealogy files.

Maybe this is the right one. Almedia is not mentioned, only the first? marriage and the last relationship. There is a typo in the first part of the text. This man died in 1976 and not in 1970.

This is my grandmother. Both the mydeathspace post and Namus report were made by me. The biggest issue we have is that no one but my mother, her cousin, and sister are still alive. The dates are guesses based on other things that happened around the same time. An original missing persons report was made at the time but when I contacted LMPD I was told there was a flood in the 60’s that ruined a ton of documents. They believe her case was amongst them. Let me know if I can provide any clarification.

As of today, Kentucky has approximately 310 missing persons cases, some of which are literally decades old such as Almedia's case.

The Kentucky State Police has removed the missing persons cases from their website, or at least had the last time I checked which was last year. And a lot of the missing persons cases, such as Almedia's, have grown cold and have been forgotten.
So a few days ago I decided to bring some of these old cases back to the forefront, in hopes of bringing a resolution to the families. I am creating flyers for each case and sharing them on social media.

I have a Facebook group called "Eastern Kentucky Cold Cases" and I'm the moderator for the Facebook Group "Missing People & Cold Cases In Kentucky". I have just shared this case on the later group.

Hopefully with all of us working together, we can bring some closure to this case and others.

Thank you so much for this.

Findagrave (post #12) says he was a Navy veteran: have you checked his service records? No telling what you might find....

My uncle, a police officer was able to track her to Florida but was never able to find her.
This was a message from her granddaughter from a while back @chaddylex found and posted. Maybe we should look out for her in Florida. I wonder in what year this search was conducted. The message was from 2007.

I’m not sure what you are referring to. If it’s Vernon Melcher, my grandmother and he divorced prior to her disappearance. She is not the wife that is buried with him. She literally dropped off the face of the planet. The investigator in charge tried to do a search for a license or ID for her nation wide post 1963 and couldn’t find anything

My comment was to point out there is POSSIBLY a lot of info in his military records -- and given the apparent uncertainty about dates, etc. (general lack of reliable data) those military records might fill in some of the unknown. I am not all that familiar with what the Navy records for that time would include, but it is possible they would include SSNs for him and any spouses, or beneficiaries/next-of-kin (especially if he was [partially] disabled or got any 'benefit'), addresses, or other clues to substantiate or disprove any existing 'questionable' data. Also note that correspondence can continue well after his service days; possible the divorce generated some useful data (with the Navy). Can also give names of service buddies/unit members, for more leads.

I know it's a lot of digging, but service records CAN be a 'gold-mine' (personal experience)....and, like gold mines, there are no guarantees!
