"Since her leaving, there have been reported sightings of Lori Lee Kasprick in the Jasper Ave area of Edmonton and the Portage area of Winnipeg. But, Coleman adds, it is unknown where she may have intended to go or if she was with anyone.

Lori Lee Kasprick is described as a First Nations woman with long, black straight hair and had crooked teeth. She was 5’11” tall and had a slender build. She also had a large scar above her eyes."

"The woman is estimated to have been between 20 to 50 years old and 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall. Her body had been in the wooded area between one and 15 years, Winn said.

Police have sent her remains to a lab that is attempting to extract DNA, a process that can take a year or more, Winn said.

“Unidentified remains are the most difficult cases to work,” Winn said.

“These cases are especially difficult because you don’t even have a victim (name),” he said. “That’s where we start any investigation.”

From there, investigators question family members and known associates, he said.

“In cases like this ... these are different than your average murder,” Winn said. “This is a well-traveled highway. People from all over the country travel that road. People are routinely picked up at gas stations and rest stops.”

Police have entered information about the woman into a variety of missing person databases looking for potential matches, but so far, no luck.

“We definitely need to get this woman identified,” Winn said. “Then work back and try to find out what happened. There’s lot of hurdles with this one.”

One problem I have with the "hate crime" aspect that's been brought up...
The "rednecks" around here (she was found an hour-or-so south of where I'm at) don't seem to have anything against "Indians." Just think of the current political environment and you can guess who they don't like.

So I think the scalping part of her death may have been coincidental to her being classified as "Native American." There are plenty of serial killers who would do things akin to scalping to their victims, often things that were much worse than a "mere" scalping.

I'm also curious as to how much N/A ancestry she had. Like I said, many of us around here have "claim" to having an Indian ancestry, but that is like a family legend. No genetics involved, just "legend" in most cases.

The decedent has been identified as Carma Purpura (31) of Indianapolis, IN,

Carma didn't seem to be a likely possible for this Jane Doe. She doesn't have an obvious Native American appearance, and her height was never publicly listed.

Murder by gunshot was Mendenhall's known M.O. And Carma was known to have been one of his victims. So a female skull with a gunshot wound found on the side of a highway might have suggested Mendenhall as a possible suspect. But there wasn't a whole lot there that would tip us off that the remains belonged to Carma Purpura.

The Louisville Medical Examiner's Office identified the remains through DNA evidence, according to the release.

The mother of two was last seen at a south-side Indianapolis truck stop on July 11, 2007.
Police found blood-soaked clothing, a cell phone and an ATM card belonging to Purpura in Mendenhall's truck, according to court documents.
DNA tests on that blood showed Purpura's parents were almost certainly the parents of the person whose blood was found.

One thing that could be important in this case: the individual could have been caucasian looking even if she had Native American ancestry.

It's possible that an examination of her bones might reveal that she was Native American or part Native American but she could still look like another ethnicity. For example, I have shovel shaped incisors and my father is in fact 87.5% aboriginal. My mother however is caucasian and my skin is white.

If my bones were found police would probably designate me as Native American, in a way correctly. However in this hypothetical scenario if you started looking for red-skinned people who went missing in the area you would not be looking at my Doe-network picture because I look as caucasian as a native scotsmen.

I think this has to do with phenotype and genotype. My Native American genes are visually represented in my incisors but not in my skin color.

There's no way to conclude that we should be looking for someone who looks like a typical Native American woman based on her bones.

Bones don't mean skin color. Always remember that forever.

Bruce Mendenhall has been locked up for more than a decade and is about to stand trial again for yet another victim.

Mendenhall, 70, was just transferred from the state prison in Only, Tennessee to the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis.

He will now be prosecuted for the 2007 murder of Carma Purpura.

Over the years, Mendenhall has written letters to NewsChannel 5 -- always denying that he's a seriel killer.

But, in his last letter he did talk about the Purpura case, expressing surprise her body was found.

That statement may become part of this latest case against him.
