Circumstances of Disappearance

Flynn was last seen on January 25, 1977 about 17.00 in Lexington/Fayette Ky when she left her office, as a secretary, at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association on Cooper Drive. She never arrived at home that night.

She was seen talking to someone in a blue van near the intersection of Cooper and South Limestone Street. Another witness had seen Flynn later that night in Nellie Kelly's, then a Lexington restaurant. She was talking to a man with a pockmarked face and brown hair parted in the middle.

Her abandoned car was discovered 11 days later in northern Lexington. The 24-year-old secretary was the subject of a highly publicized search after she disappeared.
Melanie's family believes that she knew too much about the Lexington Police drug trafficking upon the arrest of a former Lexington Police Officer on cocaine trafficking charges. At the time of her disappearance there was a scandal involving the Lexington Police narcotics squad.

I feel like they got too close. Someone shut it down. But who? Why? Most likely everyone is dead that killed her.

Been a while since I’ve been on this thread. Been following the first trial in the Dr Teresa Sievers murder and now gearing up for her husband’s trial.

I was so disappointed when this last search for Melanie Flynn abruptly went dead silent AGAIN. Literally nothing came out on local news that the search had stopped. What had been a new promising and seemingly aggressive search for traces of her remains went suddenly mute... as if it never existed.

Having had time thinking about this, I wondered if something was found and all was kept quiet for privacy reasons in regards to her family—her parents are getting on in age so that seemed like a good thing to me. But finding traces of her remains isn’t all that helps closure... someone still living who knows what happened would indeed need to reveal those facts.

I agree with what Kudzuu said, above here, about proving who killed her. Some think think the person who actually killed her was Bill Canaan. Melanie and Canaan had been dating yet Canaan was married. Her parents were aware they were dating, but I personally would not know if they knew he was married. When he was questioned about Melanie it was as if he’d only heard of her—that surprised her parents. Canaan was released from federal prison on Sept 3, 2008, after a 1993 conviction on several charges including ‘intent to distribute cocaine’. A QUOTE from the Lexington Herald-Leader Sept 18, 2008 article: Canaan once told newspaper reporters that Flynn worked as an undercover agent for him. In a detention hearing for Canaan in 1993, a fellow officer testified that Canaan had admitted killing Flynn.I think it was Ralph Ross who felt Canaan killed her to keep their affair from being exposed to his wife. Ross was a former Ky State Trooper but was not serving in that capacity later as he followed the Flynn disappearance. Others think Melanie just knew too much about what was going on among The Company and all affiliated.

Besides Bill Canaan, where ever he may be, there are some still living who must know what happened to her. JMO, but it strikes me that besides Canaan there is one other person I feel knows what Canaan knows. Others who know would be more on the ‘outskirts’.

They were dating yet under later questioning, Canaan said he had only heard of her—a surprise to her parents. Former Ky State Trooper Ralph Ross also thought Canaan killed her, not wanting their affair exposed to his then wife. Others think she just knew too much about The Company. It was also reported in the Lexington Herald-Leader that during a 1993 hearing a fellow officer stated that Canaan admitted killing Melanie. Canaan was convicted on several charges in ‘93, including ‘intent to distribute cocaine’. He was released from federal prison Sept 3, 2008. Wherever he may now be, I doubt he would ever do a death bed confession—JMO from all I’ve read about him. There’s one other person I think knows what Cannan knows—and that person will never do a death bed confession either, again in my opinion. Still, I believe there are others who know some, if not all, about Melanie’s demise... they would be on the ‘outskirts’ and among them are people I believe would do a death bed confession. Time will tell. Or not.

The more I think about it, if someone names the killer on their deathbed I doubt it will be publicly stated as such, unless they can find her body. I once had a student who turned up murdered, and years later the case was unsolved and I contacted the Police and was told they knew who the killer was, but he had died in prison. There wasn't enough evidence to try him.

Likewise, if someone close to or was in The Company may tell but without a body perhaps only the family will be told? It may come out from the grapevine, and will just be hearsay. All of the people involved are getting up in years, maybe one of them will put the Flynn's hearts at ease and tell. Maybe that happened and they called off the last search. It just abruptly STOPPED. I wonder who has the authority to do that?

I kinda think they buried her in concrete and dumped her in the Kentucky River from an airplane they had access to on the farm. She could be hundreds of miles away in the Ohio or Mississippi River for that matter. They'd have to take sonar to find her. I've seen a survey of under a bridge and we could make out what looked like a sunken ship! It made for a lot of excitement at the office, but we never found out what it was, since we were only interested in the bridge substructure.

Hey Kudzuu, agree with all you’ve said here. Over the years many have thought LE knew who killed her but couldn’t prove it, no body and all. And yeah, all would be hearsay unless Canaan willingly confessed & paid the price—that ain’t happnin’, if he really did as it seems. I can think of 4 or 5 people still living who I think really know what happened—not wanting any publicity, they will remain silent AND we’d still be looking at.... hearsay. Word also travels—there are probably many more on the ‘outskirts’ who heard what factually took place along with other half true versions. I do know that a new investigator was on this reopened case, had a good reputation and had already solved 4-5 such cases prior to taking Melanie’s on.

Prayers for the Flynn family.

I just learned about Tim Miller of Texas. He founded Texas Equusearch after his daughter was found deceased—she had been abducted & murdered. They say he’s “a genius in finding missing people”. I wonder if he could find traces of Melanie’s remains. All still remain quiet, no info as to why.

They came here to Ky for the Spurlock case and, I believe, in part, the weather conditions, were the cause of them being unable to locate her. That doesn't mean that they couldn't be of assistance in this case, in some way. I almost think it may have been too long now, though.

Details of Disappearance
Melanie's father, Bobby Flynn, then a Kentucky state senator, called her at 4:00 p.m. on January 25, 1977. He asked her to bring some materials home from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in Lexington, Kentucky, where she worked as a secretary. She promised she would bring the items home after going to a 5:30 p.m. doctor's appointment.

Melanie left work at 5:00 p.m., driving her red 1975 Ford Elite. She turned right off Cooper Drive onto south Limestone Street. Melanie never arrived at her appointment and never came home. She has never been heard from again. Bobby reported her missing three days later.

Melanie is believed to have had only about $12 in cash on her person when she disappeared. She was supposed to get paid three days after her disappearance, but never picked up the check. Her clothing and other personal belongings were left behind in her bedroom.

On February 8, a police officer found Melanie's car in an apartment building parking lot on Hollow Creek Road in Lexington. The surrounding area was known as a drug spot. Flynn's red leather coat was inside the car, and so was a suitcase left over from a trip to Louisville, Kentucky she'd taken the week before her disappearance. Her purse and the car keys were gone, however.

Bobby initially believed his daughter developed amnesia and wandered off. She fell off a running horse in 1972 and suffered a serious head injury that had her hospitalized for months, and she permanently lost her senses of smell and taste.

In the months after her disappearance, police investigated leads that Melanie had gone to Florida. Several witnesses at the Texas Hotel in Daytona Beach identified her from photographs and said they'd seen her between March and June. They said the woman they spoke to had mannerisms similar to Melanie's, mentioned getting medical treatment for an allergy Melanie had, and talked about people whom Melanie knew. The woman in Daytona Beach was never located, however, and it was never confirmed that she was Melanie.

During August 1977, Melanie's purse was found floating in the Kentucky River near Camp Nelson, twenty miles south of Lexington. The purse contained lipstick, a perfume atomizer, and two bottles of medicine, one of which was Melanie's antihistamines.

Melanie was working as an informant with the police at the time of her disappearance; she agreed to introduce a detective, Bill Canan, to members of the drug culture to avoid her own arrest for possession of marijuana. She took Canan to parties and introduced him as her boyfriend, but he denies that they never had a personal relationship.

Canan does not believe the undercover work is related to Melanie's disappearance. Her family believes he is not being truthful about the nature of their relationship; they say Canan was a friend of the family and he and Melanie were dating. He was the police officer to whom Bobby reported his daughter's disappearance.

Bobby and Melanie's mother, Ella Ritchey Flynn, believe Canan was involved in their daughter's disappearance. He was never charged in connection with it, but he was arrested on federal drug charges in 1993.

Bobby and Ella theorize that there was a police cover-up after Melanie's disappearance and evidence was suppressed. They have stated publicly their theory that Canan and possibly other police officers abducted and murdered Melanie.

Melanie aspired to be a horse jockey or a singer at the time of her disappearance; she used the stage name Melanie O'Hara. She likes traveling and had previously lived in Cincinnati, Ohio for a brief period; her brother, Doug, had been the utility infielder for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. She is divorced.

Melanie's loved ones describe her as high-strung and energetic. They stated she would never have left without contacting them eventually. Her case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.

Just for posterity, the link in my last post (podcast with Sally Denton) is related to the surveys/digs related to the search for Melanie Flynn in the summer of last yr. In no way was I attempting to derail the thread towards anything but the search for Melanie.

IMO The closest anyone will come to locating Melanie will be related to her associations with the Bluegrass Conspiracy players which includes Canan.

Totally agree.

Somehow I missed this June 2019 podcast with Bluegrass Conspiracy author Sally Denton. I don't know if we gain any new information but I thought I'd share.

Uniquely Kentucky with Amber Philpott | Sally Denton, The Bluegrass Conspiracy

Thnx for posting this Sally Denton interview by Amber Philpot. Informative as to Denton’s personal life over the years, threats to her life, etc. Worth a listen for those interested. Intriguing that Denton mentions being contacted numerous times for options to make a motion picture about the BGC.
NOTE: some yrs back a TV movie (B rating in my opinion) was made focusing on the murder of the Florida judge by Bonnie Kelly, Vance providing the gun, etc.
Denton said after so many yrs she figured out these so-called ‘options’, some resulting in $20,000 yrly for a time, we’re merely to keep any picture being made. Flash forward, from what Sally says, Spencer Productions has shown interest. She later mentions Octavia Spencer. I tried looking up a bit online but found nothing. But in all fairness, unless something was on Spencer’s radar for serious consideration, via early prospective agreement with Denton, nothing would be found IMHO. Interesting though.

This same location had been previously searched by KSP, Ky AG Investigators as well as LPD in the 80s and 90s as well as caves near Halls Restaurant.

8291 Old Richmond Road it’s still a large piece of land owned by one person that encompasses the borders of Richmond, Winchester, and Fayetteville county.
