bbm, T4Tide: I always find myself wondering this, too, in cases like these -- where the person/s who have done something completely horrible and despicable to a sweet, innocent child are not all that many years away from having been an innocent child. It makes me doubly sad, and I can't help but grieve some for the child/children the perp(s) once had to be, wondering what happened in their lives to turn them onto the path they got on.

And no, it is no attempt to "excuse", of course not. But I just can't help wondering, and wishing it hadn't been so, for all involved.

I doubt it was Katrina -- likely it was many things, accumulating.

The other day, I was watching Judge Mathis- yep!... I love him!!! Anyway, he said that "in some neighborhoods there are only 2 choices- you are the predator or you are the prey. End of story." I was real horrified by the thought of this because in my mind, we are community, one species, not the jungle where one species is hiding from or looking for another. We are all the same! But, the more I think about it, I think there could horribly be some truth to it here in New Orleans. Not everyone, but way too many! Being a predator, just because. Not for any good reason other than they are a predator who does not identify with a community, but rather only their own personal space and desires. It is horrible and terrifying for me to imagine this. I, unfortunately, think this poor child was the prey of too many predators. My heart breaks for her and every other of the many victims that will soon follow in her beautiful light to heaven.

Also, just going with this pathetic liar's justification (if he can even possibly think that what it is) that she was trying to seduce him- Has he killed every human who has found him attractive? If he claims that's what drove him, they should start threatening him with allllll kinds of people who possibly walked past him and ended up dead. It is hard for my brain to even comprehend that a human like this even exists and walked the same streets as me. YUUUUCK!!!! I feel like I need to clean my feet.

Especially when they are caught, though NAMBLA proves some sick eff's like to pretend victims want to be raped as a lifestyle choice.

Now I'm betting this creature's going to try to pretend he's crazy, and that his lawyer is probably going to try to plea diminished capacity due to mental illness or drugs or something.. it would not surprise me.

Thing is, this guy was self-aware enough to attempt to hide the body. IMO, anyone cluey enough to want to avoid arrest knows exactly what they've done.

The defense is hoping for a delay of trial, and that pros takes the DP off the table because of the cost.

The attorneys representing the only Jefferson Parish defendant currently charged in a death penalty case said Monday they are unlikely to be ready should the trial start as scheduled next month. That's because the public defender's office, which is representing the man accused of killing 6-year-old Ahlittia North last year, says it does not have the money needed to provide an adequate defense.

One year after that heart-wrenching discovery, Ahlittia's accused killer still sits behind bars awaiting trial while relatives and friends still struggle with the void left by her absence.

One trial date has come and gone, postponed because the state public defender system lacks the money necessary to defend his expensive death penalty case.

Matthew Flugence, accused of abducting 6-year-old Ahlittia North from her Harvey home and killing her, must return to court July 27 for an update on his case. Judge Adrian Adams of the 24th Judicial District Court granted attorneys a continuance during a status hearing Monday (May 18).

Matthew Flugence could learn this fall whether he will face a jury this year, or later, in the 2013 abduction and slaying of 6-year-old Ahlittia North of Harvey. Charged with first-degree murder, Flugence, 22, faces a death sentence or life in prison if convicted.

Flugence was set to stand trial in May 2014, but public defender Paul Fleming Jr. sought a postponement, citing a lack of money for the defense and the need for more time to prepare.

On Monday (July 27), however, Fleming told Judge Adrian Adams of the 24th Judicial District Court that defense attorneys have been in discussions with prosecutors about the case and could "do something later this year.''

Adams set a status conference Oct. 7.

MF avoids DP

Matthew Flugence, the first defendant in Jefferson Parish to face the death penalty in more than five years, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Thursday in a plea deal that will see him serve life in prison for the 2013 murder of 6-year-old Ahlittia North in Harvey.

In exchange for Flugence’s guilty plea, the state withdrew an unrelated rape charge and other, lesser charges, and agreed not to pursue the death penalty.
