Sheriff: Men found dead in Intracoastal Canal were driving van with kidnap victim

LAFAYETTE -
The two men found dead in the Intracoastal Canal on Monday drowned after evading police, who found the two driving a van carrying the victim of a weekend Lafayette abduction, West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Mike Cazes said on Tuesday.

Cazes said he had no information to disclose about Lawrence Michael Handley, who's the primary suspect in the kidnapping.

The Lafayette Police Department remains tight-lipped on their suspicions about Handley's involvement but say they've uncovered information about his alleged role, adding that his whereabouts are still unknown.

Police have said Handley knew the kidnapping victim but have not identified his relation to her.

Court records show Handley was involved in a recent, heated divorce that involved mutual restraining orders.

The Lafayette Police Department said Lawrence Michael Handley is wanted for second-degree kidnapping, attempted second-degree kidnapping, and violation of a protective order. Investigators reported the incident appears to have stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute between Handley and the female victim.

Alleged kidnapper in custody, Slidell Police say

Handley was arrested shortly after 4:00 p.m. today, Slidell Police said. He was arrested at a local motel off of Old Spanish Trail in Slidell.

Handley was booked into the Slidell City Jail as a fugitive, and will ultimately be transported back to Lafayette to face his charges.

The local news station showed the neighborhood where the alleged kidnapping occurred. It's a newish subdivision that's designed to have a traditionally inspired small-town atmosphere.

Lafayette kidnapping suspect booked into LPCC Tuesday

On August 11, Handley was arrested at a Slidell hotel. He was transported to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on Tuesday and booked on charges of 3 counts of violation of protective orders, online impersonation and 2 counts conspiracy/ second degree kidnapping.

A bond has been set at $266,000.

The judge denied bail to this guy.


Despite having $21 million, this guy wasn't too smart. He was texting the ex-wife with threats in the month prior to her kidnapping. Then he hired two criminals to kidnap her who, after abandoning the van in which they had the ex-wife handcuffed, fled on foot. After being chased by police with dogs they jumped into a canal but apparently were unable to swim since they both drowned. Meanwhile, Mr. Millionaire was waiting for the two drowned kidnappers to show up with his ex-wife.

Police arrested him a few days later at a motel.

Glad this one is off the steets. Yes, very Fargo-like.
