FBI assists with investigation of missing mom whose son was found abandoned

Police in South Florida, including Miramar and Hollywood departments, have been on the hunt for the toddler's mother, Leila Cavett, since July 26.

"Police have stated she was possibly in the Fort Lauderdale beach area before her disappearance in the company of a Black male," according to the family's attorney.

The law firm has posted daily updates on Cavett's case to its Facebook page since Monday. Request for comment from the attorneys was not returned.

"The FBI is providing assistance to local law enforcement," public affairs specialist Jim Marshall confirmed to ABC News on Wednesday.

The little boy has been placed in the state's foster care system.

Cavett's family, who drove from Alabama and Tennessee to assist with regaining custody of Kamdyn, were granted visitation by a family court judge on Monday, according to the family's attorney.

They saw and spoke with the child through a Zoom video conference call due to the coronavirus pandemic

Leila Cavett: FBI joins investigation as mom of abandoned toddler remains missing over a week
The FBI has joined in on the investigation of missing Georgia mother Leila Cavett, who mysteriously vanished July 26, leaving her family desperate for answers.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, police are continuing the search for Cavett, 21, of Dawsonville, Georgia, who was possibly spotted on July 26 in Hollywood, Florida, close to Hollywood Boulevard and State Road 7. Around two miles away in Miramar, her son, 2-year-old Kamdyn Cavett Arnold, was found wandering alone in a t-shirt and a diaper.

A passerby discovered Kamdyn outside and alone at an apartment complex on July 26, off of 1860 block of SW 68th Avenue, and contacted the police.

Police discovered Cavett’s white truck, a late ’90s Chevrolet 3500, in Hollywood at a Walmart parking lot off of 441 and Hollywood Blvd. Investigators said Cavett may be in danger.

While Kamdyn is currently in foster care, his mother has not been seen or heard from, according to family. Cavett’s sister, Gina Lewis, said that the family is trying to get custody of Kamdyn amid the search for his mother, but the process has not been easy.

They are only allowing Zoom calls,” Lewis said, according to the Miami Herald. “But I think he’ll be excited to see everybody.”

The family’s attorney, Javaron D. Buckley Sr., told the outlet that family will likely have a long process to go through before getting custody of the boy.

“It will be a while before anybody can get custody of Kamdyn because there are multiple states involved: Florida, Georgia, and Alabama,” Buckley said.

Meanwhile, Cavett’s father, Curtis Cavett, of Ohio, said he thinks someone knows something and found her departure extremely concerning. Curtis Cavett told Local 10 News that investigators said Cavett may have “left her home in Georgia abruptly” in the middle of the night.

“Leila actually picked up in the middle of the night and just left which sounded strange,” Curtis Cavett said. “Every day I have to pick myself up and try to move along to try and figure out to keep myself together for my daughter and my grandson.”

Cavett stands 5-feet-4-inches tall and weighs around 120 pounds. She has a tattoo on her inner right arm that reads, “Kamdyn,” in cursive and a small tattoo of a “Jesus fish” on her right wrist.

Anyone with information should contact the Hollywood Police Department in Florida or call 911.

MIRAMAR, Fla. – The FBI has released new pieces of information in the case of missing mom Leila Cavett and it has to do with the white truck that was found in Hollywood and surveillance of her seen at a gas station not too far away in a different car, News 6 partner WPLG-TV reported.

At the headquarters in Miramar, the FBI on Thursday showed images from surveillance video of the last few times Cavett was seen, which was three weeks ago.

Detectives confirmed that the 21-year-old mother and her 2-year-old son were alone when they drove from Georgia in a white pickup truck south to Florida on July 24 and 25.

“She arrived on July 25 and it appears she went missing on July 26, so its during that time that’s really critical for us,” said Georg Piro, FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge.

FBI Releases New Pictures Of Missing Mom Leila Cavett Before Her Disappearance In South Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — The FBI on Thursday made an urgent plea asking for the public’s help in finding missing Georgia mother, Leila Cavett, whose toddler was found barefoot, wandering alone outside a Miramar apartment complex more than two weeks ago.

During an afternoon news conference, FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge George Piro told reporters they are aggressively pursuing a large number of leads in efforts to find the missing mother.

The FBI also released new surveillance photographs of Cavett prior to her disappearance when she was inside a Cracker Barrel in Vero Beach the evening of July 24.

Piro said she arrived in town on July 25, disappeared on July 26, and her white Silverado 3500 pickup truck was found in Hollywood on July 28. It was found in a Walmart parking lot at 441 and Hollywood Blvd right next to the RaceTrac gas station. Its “baby on board” sign still displayed in a passenger side window.

Piro said the FBI is compiling a list of people who may have come into contact with her while she was in South Florida.

“We believe some people who are familiar with the circumstances surrounding Leila’s disappearance remain in our community, while some have left the area,” said Piro. “For those who have already been interviewed, we thank you for your cooperation, as we may be asking for your help again.”

The FBI says Cavett was last seen on July 26, hours before her son Kamdyn was found in Miramar. Two residents there called police, and cared for the toddler in the meantime.

“Leila’s separation from her son is completely out of character,” said Piro. “Her family and others in our community are very concerned about her safety and well-being.”

In addition to being seen in Hollywood, Piro said she was also spotted in Miramar and Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Family members previously told CBS4 that Cavett’s grandmother was the final person to have any communication with her through a Facebook message on July 26. They said Cavett had no plans to come to Florida.

The family told CBS4 that Cavett is single and does not have a relationship with her son’s father.

Leila Cavett: FBI releases last known photos of missing mom whose toddler was found wandering alone in Florida

On Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released additional images of missing mother, Leila Cavett, who mysteriously disappeared last month.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Cavett, 21, of Dawsonville, Georgia, disappeared July 26, after she possibly drove to Florida with her toddler son.

During the morning hours of July 26, a passerby discovered Cavett’s son, 2-year-old Kamdyn Cavett Arnold, wandering alone in a t-shirt and a dirty diaper outside of an apartment complex off of SW 68th Avenue in Miramar. After searching the area for the toddler’s caretakers without luck, the passerby contacted the police.

On July 28, police discovered Cavett’s white truck, a late 90s Chevrolet 3500, in Hollywood, Florida, at a Walmart parking lot off of 441 and Hollywood Blvd. Investigators didn’t locate Cavett and announced that she could be in danger.

Kamdyn is in foster care while the search continues. Cavett’s sister, Gina Lewis, said that the family is trying to get custody of Kamdyn but the process has not been easy.

Meanwhile, the FBI announced that they believe whoever is responsible for Cavett’s disappearance is likely still in the area.

“We believe some people who are familiar with the circumstances surrounding Leila’s disappearance remain in our community, while some have left the area,” FBI Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro said. “For those who have already been interviewed, we thank you for your cooperation, as we may be asking for your help again.”

Security footage captured Cavett on the evening of July 24 at a Cracker Barrel in Vero Beach, with her son. She was spotted the following day at a RaceTrac gas station on Hollywood Boulevard, next to the Walmart where police found her truck.

Cavett entered and exited a Lexus sedan at RaceTrac at around 3 p.m. on July 25. Cavett returned to the same gas station that evening, with her son, according to authorities.

The Cavett family lawyer, Javaron D. Buckley Sr., Esq., said Cavett was in the presence of a black male before her disappearance, who may have ties to Texas. The male was reportedly in Hollywood Beach visiting his girlfriend, Buckley told Dr. Phil.

“He’s believed to be the boyfriend of a young lady who’s currently here in Hollywood, Florida…He was, from my understanding, detained by the Hollywood Police Department and released…I’m not sure the line of questioning, but they did question him. There was not enough to keep him, which is why they let him go.”

Buckley Sr. added that the man’s girlfriend initially refused to speak with authorities. No one, so far, has been named a suspect in Cavett’s disappearance.

“It’s not out of character for her to go places, but it’s definitely out of character for her to be in Florida,” Cavett’s sister, Gina Lewis, previously told NBC 6. “We’re in Alabama, she lives in Georgia. If it’s not those two states, we don’t understand why she would be here, for sure.”

Cavett stands 5-feet-4-inches tall and weighs around 120 pounds. She has a tattoo on her inner right arm that reads, “Kamdyn,” in cursive and a small tattoo of a “Jesus fish” on her right wrist.
