Former FBI agent: DNA will be "jackpot" in Ana Walshe case

A former FBI special agent says forensic analysis is now the crucial piece in the disappearance of Ana Walshe of Cohasset. WBZ-TV's Beth Germano reports.

JAN 13, 2023
Ana Walshe, an ambitious 25-year-old from Serbia, met her husband Brian, the son of a prominent neurologist, at an upscale hotel in Massachusetts in 2008 in a moment she described as "love at first sight."

The pair crossed paths when the young woman, who then went by Ana Knipp, was working at the luxury Wheatleigh Hotel in the Berkshires as a reservations manager.

[...]

After dating long-distance for years, the pair tied the knot Dec. 21, 2015, in an intimate ceremony at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Boston and soon had three young boys ages 2, 4 and 6.

[...]

The couple wed in front of a few dozen family members and friends, according to a witness. Not one member of the groom's family was present, the witness added.

[...]

When Ana Walshe met her soon-to-be husband, she was already married to Mark Knipp, whom she divorced in 2014, records shows.

[...]

The driven businesswoman started a new job in February as a regional manager at Tishman Speyer in Washington, D.C. and bought a $1.3 million townhouse in the affluent neighborhood of Chevy Chase.

In March, she sold the family's Jerusalem Road home in Cohasset for $1.385 million. Both properties were listed solely in her name, according to public records.

[...]

Ana Walshe graduated from the University of Belgrade before earning a master's in hospitality management at Cornell University.

Meanwhile, her husband dropped out of Carnegie Mellon University years before they met, according to court papers.

It's unclear what, if any, legitimate work he did during their marriage.

On his LinkedIn page, he lists himself as the CFOs of various organization that don't appear to have websites.

The husband of missing Massachusetts mother Ana Walshe will likely have “no sanity defense” in the case, despite being named a “sociopath” in previous court filings.

[...]

Fox News Digital reports that a New York-based lawyer who “successfully tried a mental health defense in 2014,” doesn’t think the defendant will be able to claim insanity in the case.

“Most of our clients are sociopaths, that means you’re just putting your interest above society,” New York defense attorney Daniel Gotlin said. “It doesn’t mean you’re insane when you a commit a crime.”

“There’s too much planning in it. Insanity happens on the spur of the moment."

January 1, 2023

As Brian Walshe told police, in the morning Ana Walshe “got ready and kissed him goodbye and told him to go back to sleep,” the affidavit states. She usually took an Uber, Lyft or Taxi to the airport and left between 6 and 7 a.m., the affidavit states.

He further told police a babysitter arrived in the afternoon and he left home to get groceries at about 3 p.m., the affidavit states.

He told police he then went to see his mother at about 4 p.m. in Swampscott, about an hour drive from Cohasset, but did not have his cell phone and got lost, making the trip longer than usual, the affidavit states. He said he left his mother’s home within about 15 minutes of arriving to run errands for her at Whole Foods and CVS and eventually returned home to Cohasset at about 8 p.m., according to the affidavit.

January 2

Ana Walshe’s cell phone pinged in the area of their Cohasset home on January 1 and 2, according to prosecutor Lynn Beland.

As Brian Walshe told investigators, he took one of his children for ice cream at a juice bar in Norwell on January 2 while the babysitter watched his two other kids, the affidavit states.

Investigators confirmed this trip occurred, the affidavit states.

According to surveillance video, Brian Walshe traveled to a Home Depot in Rockland wearing a surgical mask and gloves and made a cash purchase, the affidavit states. There, Walshe bought $450 of cleaning supplies, including mops, a bucket, tarps and various types of tape, according to Beland.

The Cohasset Police Department logs show that, as of Jan. 4, Ana’s cellphone was off, but had last "hit a tower" around 3:14 a.m. on Jan. 2, just shy of 24 hours after she was reportedly last seen.

The log further describes how Ana’s cellphone "hit the tower" on Reservoir Road in Cohasset, approximately 0.7 miles from her home.

Four residents who live in or around Reservoir Road told Fox News Digital Thursday night that investigators combed through the area Jan. 6. Investigators asked neighbors if they saw or heard anything during the early morning of Jan. 2, according to a couple who live in a nearby home and asked to remain anonymous out of concern for their safety.

"We were asleep and didn’t see anything. We have a camera, but it was full, so I deleted the footage last week. I’m kicking myself," the male resident said.

Reservoir Road is a winding, suburban street lined with homes on both sides. A metal barrier blocks a walking path at the end of the street.

A cellphone tower is located at 75 Reservoir Road, which is approximately a 15-minute walk or a two-minute drive from the Walshes’ home.

The area is busy in the daytime, neighbors said, particularly before school starts and ends. They said parents often allow their children to use the nearby walking path to get to school.

Walshe's friends, Natasha Sky and Pamela Bardhi, joined "Lawrence Jones Cross Country" Saturday to discuss Walshe's disappearance as investigators continue to probe the case.

"I have to ask, and forgive me for asking this question, but do you believe Anna is alive or do you believe Anna is dead?" host Lawrence Jones asked the pair on Saturday.

"One in a million chance," Sky said. "That's what I would answer, and not because… Pamela and I know her personally, how Ana is driven and how she's independent. She would find a way to reach out to people if something would happen to her."

[...]

Sky noted Brian Walshe, Ana's husband, exhibited strange behavior and was rarely with her in social settings.

Lawrence Jones asked her about Brian's alleged "no picture policy," which has prompted many critics to question the pair's dynamic. He noted how few pictures of Ana there are online.

"She was hiding, truly," Sky said.

JD can't believe what has happened to this family since New Year's Day.

"I saw her every day," JD said. "She was beautiful every day. I never saw her upset. I never saw him upset. I know. It was just the strangest thing. So to think that this is happening is like, what?"

According to the log, a call requesting a well-being check was made on January 4th by a man who identified himself as a head of security at Tishman Speyer in Washington D.C.

[...]

The head of security reportedly said the “company has contacted the husband” and that “he has not filed a missing person report”.

The details contradict initial reports that Ana Walshe’s employer and Brian Walshe simultaneously reported her missing.

During last week’s arraignment, Brian Walshe’s attorney told the court that it was her client who contacted Tishman Speyer about his missing wife.

Tracy said the processing of evidence at the Massachusetts State Crime Laboratory can take weeks if not longer.

[...]

He’s not getting out. He’s not going anywhere.. So there’s no rush for them to say we’ve got to get him or he’s going to escape the jurisdiction,” said Tracy.

[...]

“He’s already on pre-trial probation with the federal government and will take control of his body if he ever made the $500,000. Then he would go to the federal court, and they would not let him go under any circumstances,” he added.

COHASSET, Mass. – EXCLUSIVE: Ana Walshe, the Massachusetts real estate boss missing over two weeks, was making plans for the future and was selling some of her assets with the intention of reinvesting the profits into a property she was intending to buy, a well-placed source confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Walshe, the 39-year-old real estate manager who regularly commuted to Washington, D.C. for work, had owned an apartment in Revere, Massachusetts, for years before she finalized the sale just days before her disappearance. Walshe lived with her family in the seaside, South Shore town of Cohasset, but owned investment properties, including the apartment in Revere.

Her longtime Revere tenants previously told Fox News Digital Walshe's behavior had changed in recent months, when she suddenly sprung on them the news of the property sale and grew "pushy" – different from the friend they once considered her.

[..]

The source, who asked to remain anonymous out of a concern for their privacy, spoke out after they said certain reports about Walshe’s recent actions were not "sitting right" with them. The source said the funds from the sale of the Revere property were already in escrow when Walshe vanished in the beginning of the month.

But a source who worked closely with Walshe told Fox News Digital the "proceeds from the sale of the Revere condo were going directly into the purchase of another investment property, and not to Ana herself."

The person told Fox News Digital the process of selling assets to acquire others is "not unusual in any way."

Ana Walshe's Washington DC job was a point of tension with her husband as the missing Massachusetts mom was seen without her wedding ring weeks before disappearing.

Walshe, 39, who disappeared from her Cohasset home on New Year's, appeared in several of her latest Instagram photos without her wedding ring as it was reported the couple had a 'very tense Christmas.'

Two weeks before her disappearance, the mom-of-three posed with Paul Wharton, a British gin entrepreneur, at his book signing in Washington DC. The two were locked in a tight embrace as they smile at the camera. Her ring reappeared days later when she posted a birthday tribute to her two-year-old on December 17.
