A 65-year-old Holden man accused of murdering his estranged brother and dismembering his body pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday morning in Worcester Superior Court.

Michael S. Dowjat of 119 Lovell Road, Holden, was ordered held without bail on a charge of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 59-year-old brother, David Alan, whose body was found June 14 inside a locked basement bomb shelter in his home at 124 East County Road (Route 68) in Rutland. According to the murder indictment, Mr. Alan was killed on or about June 8.

Assistant District Attorney Terry J. McLaughlin told Judge James R. Lemire that Mr. Alan suffered more than 70 stab wounds to his head and torso and that his head, arms and legs had been severed.

McLaughlin said the alleged killing took place after Dowjat, who reportedly hadn’t seen his brother in 20 years, was cut out of their father’s will. He noted evidence indicated Dowjat had financial problems and was filing for bankruptcy.

Prosecutors went through the painstaking process Tuesday of introducing boxes of items into evidence in the trial of Michael S. Dowjat, the Holden man accused of murdering, dismembering and decapitating his brother, David Alan, in 2014.

The exhibits, which joined hundreds of photographs previously offered into evidence, included handsaws, knives, tarps, trash bags, latex gloves, a two-wheeled dolly, a page from a journal and a cellphone recovered by state police investigators from the 59-year-old Mr. Alan’s home at 124 East County Road, Rutland, where the killing occurred on or about June 8, 2014.

While a prosecutor told a jury Monday that Michael S. Dowjat made a conscious decision to kill his estranged brother, David Alan, and that the evidence would show the slaying was first-degree murder, Mr. Dowjat’s lawyer said his client acted in self-defense and should be found not guilty.

Testimony got underway in the 68-year-old Mr. Dowjat’s Worcester Superior Court trial on a murder charge in the 2014 killing of Mr. Alan, 59, in his home at 124 East County Road in Rutland.

Michael Dowjat, the 68-year-old Holden man accused of stabbing and dismembering his estranged brother, has been found guilty of second degree murder.

A Superior Court jury deliberated for 13 hours over three days before delivering the verdict Friday, according to a news release from the Worcester County District Attorney's Office. Judge Daniel M. Wrenn has scheduled sentencing for May 10, but by statute, Dowjat will be sentenced to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
