The baby was a boy and likely died between one and four weeks before his body was discovered in a thicket by a walking path Saturday, Dec. 9, according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, but investigators were still working to identify the baby. He was being referred to as "Baby Doe."

Focus on ‘Safe Haven' education after infant's body found in New Bedford

An infant's remains were found at Fort Taber in New Bedford, Massachusetts, over the weekend. Now advocates are trying to raise awareness about the state's Safe Haven act, which gives desperate parents a safe option to leave their newborn child

DNA testing led authorities to determine Baby Doe was a male and likely died about four to six weeks before he was discovered, the statement said.

As part of their investigation, detectives were reviewing several weeks' worth of surveillance footage from the surrounding area, and retrieved DNA from the scene to track down others who might be involved.

The retrieved DNA turned out to be a match to Escobar-Mejia, authorities allege.

It wasn't immediately clear if she has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on her behalf. She is expected back in court in September.
