Police are investigating Wednesday after apparent human remains were found in the woods of western Massachusetts.
The remains were discovered in a wooded area in Hatfield, but state police did not specify a location.
The cause of death and the person's identity remain unknown.

HATFIELD - The Northwestern District Attorney's Office has confirmed that human skeletal remains have been found in a remote section of Hatfield, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
DA spokeswoman Mary Carey said it is too early to determine how the person died or if foul play was involved.
The remains have been turned over to the state Medical Examiner's Office for examination and possible identification, she said.
The remains were found in what she described as a remote, wooded section of Hatfield not easily accessible to anyone, she said.
Carey did not specify what part of town that was.

The remains were found deep in the woods in Hatfield, and though the person has yet to be identified, the family of Joanne Ringer was in Hatfield Wednesday afternoon.
State troopers and Hatfield police searched the woods off Mountain Road Wednesday, where human remains were found that morning.

Joanne Ringer has been missing from her home in Berkshire County for nearly a year. Her family was in Hatfield Wednesday, but declined to speak with 22News.

The Berkshire County District Attorney’s office has been investigating Ringer’s death as a homicide, and her husband, who committed suicide last year, was a prime suspect.
