In the end, the former dental hygienist who ran away with Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger and helped keep him hidden for 16 years was more loyal to the mob than any man.

A federal judge ordered Catherine Greig, 65, to spend another 21 months in prison for refusing to tell a grand jury if anyone helped the couple while on the run... “History will remember Bulger as a monster and if she is loyal to that kind of monster, that’s her affair,” the judge said.

Already serving an eight-year sentence for hiding Bulger, Greig won’t be eligible for release until 2021.

A former FBI agent pleaded guilty Monday to lying on the stand during Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger's trial.

Robert Fitzpatrick, 76, was accused of lying to jurors and overstating his professional accomplishments during Bulger's 2013 racketeering trial. He pleaded guilty in federal court to six counts each of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Fitzpatrick, who had been second-in-command of the FBI's Boston division during Bulger's bloody reign, was the first witness Bulger's lawyers called during the high-profile trial.

Some things seem to capture the public perception of gangster James “Whitey” Bulger’s life: a sterling silver “psycho killer” skull ring, a rat-shaped pencil holder, a stack of books about the mafia.

But others tell of a mundane, domestic life in hiding with his longtime girlfriend: a coffee pot, a muffin pan, a few dozen T-shirts and pajamas.

Hundreds of items from both sides of Bulger’s life are going on the auction block Saturday as the federal government attempts to raise money for the families of his victims, including 20 people killed by Bulger and his gang and several extortion victims.

Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear an appeal of his case.

Bulger was convicted in 2013 on racketeering charges for playing a role in 11 murders and committing a litany of other crimes. He's currently serving a life sentence.

Hank Brennan, Bulger's attorney, told WBUR in an interview on Wednesday that his client did not receive a fair trial because Bulger was not allowed to discuss his claim that a now-deceased federal prosecutor had granted him immunity.

The killing of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger at a West Virginia prison Tuesday was at least the third at the facility this year, according to media reports.

One inmate was killed in a fight just last month and another inmate was killed in a fight in the spring at the maximum-security USP Hazelton. Each incident sparked an outcry from federal lawmakers and union officials about violence and inadequate staffing at the prison.

Sources differ as to why Bulger was moved from Florida. One person told the Globe that he had health problems, another that he had disciplinary issues in Florida.

Hazelton in West Virginia is not a medical facility, and there is no reason to transfer a prisoner there for health issues.

Adding to the mystery is the fact that 89-year-old Bulger, a high-profile inmate with many enemies, and who was also reportedly in a wheelchair, was placed in general population at Hazelton, according to head of the union who represents prison employees there.
