Not confirmed (as far as I know, officially), but under investigation:

"Fox25 reports that investigators are looking into the possibility that Marcotte was sexually assaulted then set of fire. MassLive has also learned that her body was burned.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr. called the circumstances surrounding Marcotte's death "horrific.""

That is from 4:06 this afternoon, 8 Aug.

OMG Beyond horrific. WTH?!!!

I agree, it is disturbing! And, both went running from their parents' homes in neighborhoods were they felt, literally, at home. :(

jmo

It's not that big a distance between the murder scenes. Theoretically at least the same person could have done it. Especially considering police think it might be a transient in KV's case.

If it were Boston, I might agree, but Vanessa's location looks like a small town outside of Boston. I'm not entirely ruling out the possibility of a connection, but I think it's a remote chance.

However, in Hannah Graham's case, WS saw a connection to another murder when I didn't....and they were right.

Would the fire be an attempt to conceal Dna evidence, her body, or her identity. If it's to destroy dna, I wonder if the perpetrator is in he system and knows he would be linked. Im not sure how many random rape/murder victims are attempted to be burned. I would imagine the criminal would want to get out of there asap, but a criminal isn't thinking clearly anyway.
I think it's most likely a repeat offender.

I think DNA. So perhaps he's in the system someplace, or he knows LE has his DNA. jmo though.

Princeton is northwest of Boston, about 65 miles away. The main reason people from outside of the area go to Princeton is to go to the Mt Wachusett State Park in the summer and the Wachusett Ski Area in the winter.

It's a beautiful rural town, near the small cities of Fitchburg and Leominster. Both cities are not doing well and have a fair amount of crime for Massachusetts. Fitchburg was a paper mill city and Leominster a plastics city.

I suspect that the perp followed her from NYC. Moo and all.

Do you think he nabbed her on that stretch of road, or elsewhere and then dumped the body in that wooded section?

Missing jogger found dead in Princeton, homicide investigation underway

A New York City woman visiting family in Princeton was found dead after going jogging, according to Mass. State Police.

Police said 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte was last seen 1 p.m. Sunday when she went for a run. A Mass. State Police K-9 unit found her body about a half mile from her mother's house.

A source told FOX25 that Marcotte was found with burns on her head and feet. Investigators are examining the possibility that Marcotte was sexually assaulted and then set on fire.

Just wanted to share more about the area, if it helps at all.

The whole town is pretty much a wooded area. All the roads are long, narrow, winedy, and run through acres and acres of woods. There is a small town center, very few business, and a handful of true neighborhoods. But most of the houses are spread far apart.

It's a middle class to upper middle class town, with some real affluence as well. It's about an hour west of Boston. (You can actually see the Boston skyline from the top of wachusett mt on a clear day.)

It's also not entirely true that it's the first murder in 30 years. There was a women who "fell" to her death from a 3rd story window a few years back and her wealthy dentist husband was recently charged with her murder.

But it is a very shocking and rate occurance in a very small and sleepy town.

My guess is it's someone she grew up with who she was actually meeting when she "went for a run"

Does anyone know where Vanessa lived in NYC ? Did she live alone,or with roomies ? Ditto Karina...

You know, this is very disturbing given the recent rape and murder of another female jogger in daylight.

I was a competitive runner for over a decade and still log a fair number of miles. Although cases of lone joggers being attacked weren't totally unheard of, they were very rare and murders were rarer still. The running world subculture is very closely knit and word travels fast regardless of what type of attack occurred and in what city. It's very unsettling that these two episodes happened so recently to each other. There's thousands upon thousands of runners who train alone (or else they'd be unable to train at all or in a very limited way) and most of us have never had a reason to fear for our safety. Honestly, the biggest threats to runners are cars and the occasional vicious dog. It's probably far more likely that a runner who is afraid to venture out alone on the streets has a much higher chance of dying in an auto accident on the way to or from a gym.

It could be a coincidence that there are two different random predators who struck in broad daylight (and probably is, given the distance between the two murders) but it does seem odd that both women were from NYC and had active social media accounts. :(

Hi Marble, do you happen to know the other daytime victim's name? ....OK, got it, I remember her now, Karina Vetrano. Hmmmm.... >>>lizb, Karina lived in NYC, found less than a mile from home.

The level of violence appears allot different comparing Vanessa to Karina homicides.... on that score, don't think the two crimes are related. But, that both were runners/joggers, attacked in daylight, look similar, well educated, and possibly same ethnicity - does give pause to think..

ETA: Vanessa posted a photo of herself in a wet suit in the Rockaways - on a map a least not all that from far from Howard Beach...

It gives me more pause to think that someone would track someone of an otherwise common demographic across state lines. Most trail runners (especially the ones who run even while visiting family at home!) are going to be in decent shape, and running in general is a hobby that requires a certain amount of socioeconomic privilege (ability to afford running shoes, a job that lets you run at a certain daylight hour, sufficient income to cover race entries/training nutrition, etc) - and therefore education. I think the tragic overlap is limited to being alone and relatively defenseless, and that the other coincidences are just symptomatic of the first one.

I really, really, really hope so anyway.

Interesting description - in our younger days wife and I were avid trail, track, and street runners... we both worked, so during the week we ran after work, even in the winter, after work running thru town using flashlights .... on vacations, would also run... my gal was much more cautions, I took more chances and can here her saying "let's not go that way", etc... we were strong and fast.... looking back, we took too many chances! With trail running, your route usually involves returning back over the way you went, and that can increase vulnerability since someone(s) seeing you go past the first time might wait for your return... Rare to see other night runners, but on the trails and tracks during the day and evenings we'd see gals by themselves and some would go round the same path multiple times... Sorry to go off topic...
