So do they think the poor people were alive for the 7 hours the plane went in the wrong direction? IMO,that would mean that this was no accident . My hope was that they were incapacitated by the sudden jump in altitude(or is that not true now?),and died for lack of oxygen hours before. If not someone was stopping them from storming the cockpit and trying to take control of the plane.

No, you all are confusing the PM's statement with a tweet sent out by Malaysia Airlines.

That's right. Malaysia's prime minister Najib Razak announced ...

"This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites," Mr Najib told a media briefing.
"It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean," he said, fighting back tears.

He was quite clear and certain.

info on the black box locator:

The Towed Pinger Locator 25 of the US Navy has the capacity to locate black boxes up to a maximum depth of 20,000 feet, but it is essential to locate the debris area, Pentagon officials said.

"In the event a debris field is located, we're moving some specialised locator equipment into the area. The Towed Pinger Locator has some highly sensitive listening capability so that if the wreck site is located, we can hear the black box pinger down to a depth of about 20,000 feet," said Cmdr Chris Budde, Fleet Operations Officer of the US Seventh Fleet.

"Basically, this super-sensitive hydrophone gets towed behind a commercial vessel very slowly and listens for black box pings," he said.

"This movement is simply a prudent effort to preposition equipment and trained personnel closer to the search area so that if debris is found we will be able to respond as quickly as possible since the battery life of the black box's pinger is limited," said Budde.

I just don't get this at all. Surely, as I am sure we all felt, the announcement that there was going to be a news conference was going to be the fact that they had found conclusive evidence of wreckage. Instead we are just told in a hastily called news conference, about conclusive data. Why? I mean why not wait until debris confirmed as the plane?

If they know without a doubt that this is where the plane went down, and that is what they said. Then they had an obligation to tell the families. Not us, not the general public. THE FAMILIES. They have been waiting long enough. :twocents:

That is a statement from Malaysia Airlines, not the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

I do understand. No arguement here. As a family member I would want more than an assumption. Hopefully they will get confirmation of debris soon.

Job #1 right now is to console the families of the passengers and crew.
....While authorities continue to locate the plane, I don't think we'll hear much again from the Malay PM or his Defence Minister.

How long ago was the story published? is the March 24th date AUS time, or is it adjusted to the reader?

The Australian Air Force is doing a tremendous job of finding whatever they can. I recall an analogy of a hair in a swimming pool (paraphrase), and even that seems to minimize the task at hand, especially now that the Malaysian PM has made his "announcement."

After this many days, going into weeks, the family and the global public awaits validation, in addition to his words of the end of MH370. The family, especially, need some sort of closure, in the wake of the handling of the case by certain authorities, IMO. I hope they receive it.

They've already been through immeasurable suffering. My heart is with them as they continue to await the next chapter in this saga that is their lives. We are with them, in support. If only it were enough.

I have no link yet... But KFI 640 (radio channel) I am listening right now claims the information of specific points where plane went down WAS discovered days ago... But just released by Malaysia today... (Saying they received the info. Today)...

I will try to fink a link... Unless someone finds one earlier...

It is absolutely imperative that the flight data recorders from MH370 are located. That is going to be the only way that we will ever know exactly what happened to the plane. :please:

Additionally, Malaysia Airlines needs to release the original transcription of the cockpit conversation. :moo:

Yes, ITA. Thank you for that, CNN.

I also like Richard Quest - he tries to actually explain things.

So it's good they are both on right now.

Anderson is so calm, and he's not all dramatic like the other hosts. He also has a heart. Look at his eyes, you can tell that he's truly sad about this.

To the Families, friends of Flight M370...

I want to hear from Imarsat directly. How did they come by their conclusions and when exactly they told Malaysian authorites?

RIP Flight 370 ... Godspeed

This is what they have said so far .. reference to modelling the aircraft movement in conjunction with movement of other planes that were in the air at the time. They gave the info to British authorities on Sunday. Malaysian PM made his announcement on Monday.

14:53: The BBC's Richard Westcott has spoken to British satellite company Inmarsat, which said its data was given to the UK's Air Accident Investigation Branch on Sunday, and that the calculations were based on an entirely new way of modelling the movement of aircraft.

15:00: Inmarsat said the new calculation basically involved crunching far more data - things like what other aircraft were doing at the time - and it needed to be checked before it went public.

Logically the families know. Yet one week ago we were all built up to believe that two large pieces seen in the ocean on satellite imagery was debris from the plane. Those pieces or any other images seen have yet to materialize. That puts me on the "find it and show me" first page.

I am unbearably sad right now. I feel so bad for the families.

CNN reports since the Malaysian Prime Minister's statement indicate that there will be a press conference in the morning (sometime this afternoon or evening for us). More details about the plane's final disposition are expected.

Oldest MH370 passenger 'cheated death six times'

First, as a baby, he was abandoned by his parents as they fled Japanese soldiers during an invasion of China.

In the ensuing years he was subsequently hit by a truck while learning to ride a bike, and nearly drowned while swimming with friends.

Then there were the three heart attacks, including one during which he was forced to ride his bike to a nearby hospital for help. Perhaps it was because of all these apparent duels with death that Mr Liu, from Nanjing in eastern China, valued his life so much. The distinguished Chinese artist and calligrapher even wrote an essay on the topic, which he published on his website.

“After having escaped death several times, I enjoy and treasure life even more,’’ he wrote.
