It was an appeal for help from a friend of someone who fears their relative (US Citizen) was on the plane, but wasn't getting any help from the airline.

Keeping in mind that it is the Ukraine's acting ambassador to the UK that is saying that .... but I tend to think it is probable, as our PM would not have used the strong language he used "Russian-backed rebels, Russian missile" if he was not pretty darn sure. And he said that after he had met with the Russian ambassador - who he publicly said he was deeply disappointed in. There must be some intel about it, I would think.

I hate to say this .. but is there a chance that the separatists would have collected up all the US passports they could find and kept them? They may find them valuable - having a passport(s) from a world-power country?
 
BBC are saying there is another five min delay at Schiphol presser, where 100 journalists are waiting.

Saying about the scenes yesterday where relatives rushed to the airport, still hoping. nd how hours later they were ushered onto buses, their faces full of grief....

Well, technically the weapons Ukrainian army has that are capable of downing a plane was made by the Soviet Union. So Ukraine could say the missile was not Ukrainian. That doesn't mean Ukraine itself didn't fire it.
 
Saddened to hear that two of the passengers were fans of my local football team, Newcastle United, on their way to watch the team play some pre-season friendlies in New Zealand. :( I didn't know them personally and it doesn't make it any more tragic than it already was, but it really hits home as it could've been any one of my friends who frequently travels for matches (or myself).

One of them had only missed one match since 1973.

Weird. Putin's just appealed for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, and Germany's foreign minister has just appealed to Russia to give access to the area. Meanwhile, Ukraine's minister has just appealed for the world's help to get access to the area to investigate.

Who's really in charge here?
