38-year old hospital nurse, Marsha Wray, disappeared after dropping off her two children at school one morning in January 1997. Her car was seen parked in a country lane three miles from her Harrogate home; it was eventually recovered in Leeds, approx. 16 miles away. It is an intriguing and also a very sad case, as Marsha has been missing for nearly 24 years and her children lost their mum overnight.

The case was revisited in 2013 by North Yorkshire cold case team, but there haven’t been any updates since to my knowledge.

It’s worth watching the cold case SIO’s video appeal and partial reconstruction of events here:

Thoughts?

If anyone was moving a car by themselves it's pretty easy train travel between Starbeck (MW's home), Knaresborough and Headingley.

That’s true, though this makes it confusing:

“Two youths were stopped while driving the vehicle. They said they found it abandoned in Hollings Lane, Headingley. Earlier it had been spotted by a police officer on a lonely country lane in the Ripley Road area of Knaresborough, three miles from her home.” Marsha: Police swoop on home

As the cold case detective mentions in this clip, the two youths were soon ruled out of the enquiry. It’s unknown how MW’s car got to Headingley, Leeds. “People being asked to lie” say Police over suspected murder of Marsha Wray — Harrogate Informer

Dai Malyn was leading the Claudia Lawrence investigation the last time l checked. He also said he thought the community were holding back in that case. Is it likely the community were holding back here?

Surely it's more likely it's someone who knew her movements and she was familiar with.

Sadly no updates from North Yorkshire Police since 2013, so no progress I guess. According to the recent Examiner Live article, the investigation is still open, probably in a ‘reactive phase’ like Claudia Lawrence. The missing nurse who dropped her kids off at school then vanished

I’ve looked everywhere and could not find any appeals from family on MSM or social media, not even for the 20th anniversary … and the 25th anniversary of her disappearance is only 6 months away. I hope she’s not been forgotten :-(

As far as POIs are concerned, only one person was ever arrested (then released without charge) to my knowledge. Marsha: Police swoop on home

Marsha’s 25th anniversary is coming up. She was last seen on 24th January 1997, although she was only reported missing two weeks later (see newspaper clips below from the York Press archives)

The mystery of tragic Yorkshire nurse Marsha Wray who vanished after the school run
Marsha Wray was last seen alive on January 24 in 1997 -25 years on, no body has been found and no information discovered about her suspected murder

It has been 25 years to the day since Harrogate nurse Marsha Wray disappeared without a trace.

The 38-year-old mum-of-two was last seen dropping her kids off at primary school on January 24 in 1997 before she vanished.

Her car, a red Metro Quest, was spotted at the Nidd Valley Gorge, on January 26 and 28, just a few days later and was eventually recovered in Headingley in Leeds.

But who moved it there remains a mystery.

Despite extensive searches, multiple public appeals and countless police interviews, Marsha Wray's case remains unsolved.

There have been no reported sightings and no body has ever been found, leaving her family, including her children and husband, desperate for answers.

A cold case review was launched in 2013 with the hope that new technologies could help police solve the suspected murder.

Adam Harland, of North Yorkshire Police’s Cold Case Review Team, said: “The case surrounding the death of Marsha Wray has been reviewed on previous occasions.

“Despite extensive investigations and appeals, the case remains open.

“We are open to any new information leading to evidence in relation to the case.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Force Control Room on 101.

I could not find an official statement by North Yorkshire Police. It’s possible that the article below reports. NYP statement given to the ExaminerLive reporter who has been looking into the case (see previous post).

North Yorkshire Police issued a statement today saying its investigation into missing Harrogate woman Marsha Wray remains open, 25 years to the day since her disappearance.

Marsha, 38, went missing after dropping off her two children at Hookstone Chase primary school on Friday, January 24 1997.

A few days after her disappearance, her red Metro Quest car was seen parked at Nidd Gorge. It was later recovered in Headingley, although who moved it there remains a mystery.

There have been no sightings since and no body has ever been found.

Adam Harland, of North Yorkshire Police’s cold case review team, said:

“The case surrounding the death of Marsha Wray has been reviewed on previous occasions.

“Despite extensive investigations and appeals, the case remains open.

“We are open to any new information leading to evidence in relation to the case.”

Marsha worked as a nurse at Harrogate District Hospital. Her husband of 17 years, Colin, said she had told him she was going away for a few days.
