''On April 15, 1986, investigators say 24-year-old Janice Lynn Potter arrived home on Talister Court in Baltimore County.
Potter was two months pregnant and went to the basement after dinner to watch television.
Her husband opened the sliding glass door slightly just before he left for school. He said the wood-burning stove in the basement was putting out too much heat.
He came home to a horrific sight. Potter had been brutally murdered.''
Police say in the weeks before her death, she had been receiving annoying phone calls.
Investigators believe that person may have been the one who killed her.
Former neighbors may also hold keys to cracking the case.
"Anything, whether it's small or large, can help us solve this case," Corbin said. "And that's why we're asking anyone to contact our detectives."

''Investigation revealed that sometime between 6 and 10 p.m., an unknown person entered her residence through the basement sliding glass door, then attacked and killed Janice Potter.

In the follow-up investigation, detectives learned that a number of pieces of jewelry were stolen from the house. They included:
  • a ladies yellow gold ring with one ruby;
  • a ladies yellow gold ring with one emerald;
  • a ladies 14K white gold ring made up of a diamond surrounded by five sapphires;
  • a ladies 14K white gold wedding band, with the engraving June 14, 1981;
  • a 1/3 carat diamond white gold engagement ring;
  • a pair of 1/4 carat white gold pierced earrings; and
  • an antique sterling silver salt and pepper shaker.
In the weeks before her death, Potter, an employee of Martin Marietta Aerospace in Middle River, received annoying telephone calls at work. It is believed the person responsible for these calls may be the same person responsible for her murder. Coincidentally, the women who lived in Potter’s house before and after her also received harassing phone calls, none of which could be linked to her murder.''

''HOMICIDE VICTIM, 1986

Photo 1 of 2 of Janice Lynn Potter
In the evening of April 15, 1986, 24-year-old Janice Lynn Potter arrived home from work and ate dinner in her home on Talister Court, 21237. Janice was two months pregnant at the time and went to the basement after dinner to watch television in the family room. Her husband opened the sliding glass door slightly just before he left for school in College Park at 6 p.m. that night because the wood burning stove in the basement was putting out too much heat.

Mr. Potter came home at 10 p.m. to a horrific sight—Janice had been brutally murdered.

Investigators believe that sometime between 6 and 10 p.m., the suspect entered the home through the open sliding glass door and stabbed Janice Potter repeatedly.

In the weeks before her death, Janice Potter had been receiving annoying telephone calls and investigators believe that the person responsible for those calls may be the same person who killed her.

Investigators believe that a neighbor who resided on Talister Court in 1986 may hold the key to solving this crime.''

Detectives mention there was random harassing calls to her beforehand however i would not put to much stock in this being related. Often the simple answer is the correct answer by which I mean it was a robbery crime of opportunity by someone unknown and who lived close. A neighbor or local resident is most likely responsible. Consider the robbery and murder we can assume it was a young male of low intelligence/low impulse control/high T-levels/risk taking with no hope in their life.

'It was an average Tuesday night. Janice Lynn Potter, 24, arrived home from work on April 15, 1986, and ate dinner in her home on Talister Court in Rossville. At the time, Janice was two months pregnant. After dinner, Janice went to the family room in the basement to watch television. But with the wood-burning stove in the basement on, it was rather warm. So, before her husband left to attend his night classes in College Park at 6 p.m., Janice asked him to open their sliding glass door a crack to help let out some of the heat.When Mr. Potter returned home from class around 10 p.m., he found Janice dead in the basement.'

What is the number one cause of death among pregnant women?

Homicide by an intimate partner.
